So wait...we hire the guy to be 3rd base coach, and now the Cardinals are interviewing him for their managerial opening?

 

How could the White Sox possibly wish to promote such an unexperienced guy!!!

Chances are McEwing is the 3rd base coach. If he gets the STL job, how about Sandburg. Its time to poke the lion.

WHy is that funny? Apparently you know nothing about his pedigree in coaching. He is by far one of the best managerial candidates coming out of the minors in all of baseball.

Its considered that way because of who people have been hiring for that spot. Many managers coached bases and had influence on their teams. He will still be in the clubhouse working with the players day to day.

Im not sure how you can say what position is most important without knowing how Robin and Co will handle things. Just because a 3b coach generally does not have much responsibility, does not mean that Robin wont be talking with McEwing when the Sox are on defense and allowing McEwing to actually make an impact in the game by controlling 3b.

 

Id say that more games are won and lost based on 3b coach decision, than a bench coach whispering sweet nothings into the Managers ear.

Exactly Rock, hell be on the bench every half inning, its not that hard to discuss future strategy or hell, he could even have signs to the dugout on who he thinks should pinch hit. 3b is one of the only coaches that has a direct impact on the game.

I think I said it earlier, but I would have been OK with his being hired as Mgr.

And for that, I'm thankful. But I definitely think he was deserving of bench coach well over Parent. Ventura made that decision, though.

It might have been a case of who do we have to put where to get them all to join the staff. McEwing was already with the Organization. Probably was easier to sway him to take the 3rd base coaching job than it would have been to get Parent to leave his managerial job in the Phillies system. So they give Parent the more "important" job to sway him to leave his old role.

I only said he was hired for a position that is generally considered less important. I made no prediction on how he will be used in the future.

Same here. I would have been underwhelmed by the choice, but it would be a step up at this point, IMO.

I was impressed by the team of coaches all helping during what little I have been around professional baseball teams. It was not like there was a resource standing there saying, hell it ain't about rounding third, so I got nothin' to say. It may be where he stands for part of the game, but it shouldn't limit his, or any coaches contributions.

Well whatever it is, the team has come out of camp the last 2 years looking like absolute garbage, to the point that April has legitimately destroyed 2 seasons.

 

So if they're running a great camp...maybe we need to try a terrible camp.

I'm not joking. This team has lacked core fundamentals coming out of camp each year.
