This is Koch's quote

After the game, the White Sox placed struggling reliever Billy Koch on the 15-day disabled list because of soreness in the elbow he had "Tommy John" surgery on.

"It's not really been all season, but the last three weeks," Koch said. "It got pretty bad for a while and then sort of calmed down. I came out today and tried to throw, and it hurt to throw. I could probably throw through it, but it's not very comfortable to do. This is the best option."

And what is Adkins role going to be? He has started all year, why wouldn't you call up Matt Ginter who has been working out of the pen all year? This move doesn't make any sense...

When have you known anything in this Organization to make perfect sense  ? :bang

I don't even care about perfect sense, WTF is wrong with COMMON sense???? :o

Maybe the idea is to have them both pitch on the 5th starter day and hope to get 6-7 good innings from them combined.

Oh boy, another minor leaguer that will really help this team. I'm gonna be the first to say it before anybody else does when he finally pitches, Jon Adkins is a cocksucker. ;)

I'm guessing they are hoping to get something better than Ginter. Sandy Alomar saw him on his rehab and thought he had the best arm in AAA, so it sounds like they are taking his advice. I hope they leave Adkins and Wright in the pen and give Cotts another start when he shouldn't be nearly as nervous.

I am 2 for 2!!!! I had Ginter as my avatar before he got called up.  Then if you remember I used to have Adkins in my avatar.  Now Adkins gets called up!! I called it!!

I am looking at your avatar right now and scared s***less of who we call up next

I wonder if Oakland had a hunch that he wasn't sound. I'm hoping some R&R will help and he can have a strong couple of weeks in October.

Oh s***, RickWhiteFlag and Botch are both gone. Now who are we gonna blame for all our troubles? :o

That did come to mind. I was thinking that maybe Oakland thought he wasn't coachable or something because you'd think he could easily be corrected.

Koch has probably had this all year. If he comes back in 15 days and has a 98 MPH fastball, someone will seriously have to be shot on the Whtie Sox organization for not noticing this earlier! :bang

I'm sure LDF is thrilled at this call-up!

Pitchers don't miraculously regain velocity that they didn't have at the beginning of the season, it just doesn't happen. The Sox(and Koch) may have wanted it to happen but now that push is coming to shove it appears reality is finally starting to set in. The hope now(at least my hope) is that Billy has finally decided to add a cutter and they want to give him some minor league innings to work on it, thus the reason for the DL and the subsequent rehab assignment. If all goes well, Billy can come off the DL in time to be included on the playoff roster. If not, his DL stint will extend beyond Sep 1st and the Sox will have an injury spot to play with.

I also hope that his rehab will be at B'ham so we can get updates from Rex on how he's doing.

I have no idea if this is true, but maybe when Paniagua is ready to go, he'll be added to the roster and Cotts will get sent down making Adkins the 5th starter, so that way they wouldn't call up Ginter for like 3 days again, just a thought.

When I saw on the bottom line on ESPNews "White Sox put Billy Koch on 15-day DL(soreness in elbow)" I said two things:

It's about f***ing time and I bet he needs surgery.

You will f*** up your elbow big time if you continually throw 98 MPH heaters for 95 innings. It finally caught up to him in the postseason, and then here too.

but maybe when Paniagua is ready to go

What minor leauge team will Paniagua be sent to when he signs?

What minor leauge team will Paniagua be sent to when he signs?

dosox24, did you ever make it to a game in Birmingham while you were nearby?

Probably Charlotte to take the place of Adkins.

He'll probably wind up having surgery in October or next spring and be out all next year. Addition by subtraction if you ask me.

Yeah, paying a 40 save guy $5M next year even if he doesn't throw a pitch is really good for the team.

I wonder if Oakland had a hunch that he wasn't sound.

Or they couldn't believe that they were being offered one of the best closers in baseball (plus a left-handed hitting catcher, to boot) for a gimmick fastball pitcher.

The A's a masters at this. They screwed the Cardinals with Isringhausen in the exact same way... They pumped up the guy's saves, made him a hot commodity, and then dumped him onto the biggest buyer (who, this time, happened to give them a good pitcher).

Oh s***, RickWhiteFlag and Botch are both gone. Now who are we gonna blame for all our troubles? :o

Yeah, there are gonna be alot of lost souls on here now..now Rick White, no Billy Koch....OH NO!!! Now we have no scapegoat.."what about that Neal Cotts kid, we can blame him everyday if we lose!!"

no surprise Koch is hurt. Oakland pitched him into the ground last season. They did it with Isringhausen -- and they'll do it with Foulke this year, especially in his Walk Year.

nearly 94 innings in 84 games for the As in 2002. Marte had 60 innings last year, Osuna 67 and Foulke 77. Plus, Koch pitched in the post-season.

He had elbow surgery in 1997 and might have had it at Clemson. No way 15 days fixes thing. My guess is he'll need more surgery.

As for Adkins/Ginter, I like Ginter, but he always looks scared as heck when he gets called up. And we've been trying to get him into the pen since 2000!!!

didn't he just give up a grand slam to Olerud in Seattle after he kept falling behind in the count.

adkins started slow, but he's gotten his era down under 4 in a terrible pitcher's park in Charlotte. He's another guy who had elbow surgery, but for middle relief, why not?

You've hit on all the things I was saying when Koch was getting torn to shreds, but no one wanted to hear it. It was easier for folks to just say "Koch sucks" The guy was way overworked, plain and simple, and he has already had at least 1 elbow surgery. But people want to have selective memories, and just say "Botch Sucks". People irritate me sometimes.

on the same page capn12

obviously koch has talent

it was also obvious something had/has to be wrong.

he wasn't getting anybody out. Too many times, even his outs were hit really hard.

If he is badly hurt, I just wish he would have been honest about it earlier in the season. Then the team could have made some kind of move to get another pitcher.

maybe one of these guys from the minors -- Porzio, Ginter, Cotts, now Adkins, not to mention Sanders or Stewart -- will deliver for seven weeks.

But the odds are against it.

I believe the best we can hope for is Wright will draw confidence from last night and pitches at least at the level he pitched last season. Even though his ERA was high, he was on often enough to win 14 games.

Yeah, paying a 40 save guy $5M next year even if he doesn't throw a pitch is really good for the team.

If Koch does have surgery and is out all next year, wouldn't insurance cover his salary?
