For Danks, he usually only gets swings and misses on 20% of swing against him when he's having a good year.

 

I don't know what % of his 86 pitches were swung at, but I would guess his swing & miss % was around 10-15%, which isn't too far off from his normal numbers. He was never the type of pitcher to strike out 200 in a season.

Cooper was on the radio this morning, and it sure seems like he's trying to get fans to prepare for mediocre velocity from Danks. Also, it sounded like Santiago could get moved from the starting rotation when Danks returns just based on Cooper's assessment of Santiago's contributions to the team.

There exists a really good chance that he was more throwing his pitches than trying to get batters out.

In other words, any advantage gained by Santiago in the rotation over Floyd has been nullified by the absence of Santiago, Veal Ver. 2012 and erratic performances from Jones and Lindstrom recently.

 

So we're kind of a stabilization or treading water phase....strengthening one area, but weakening another simultaneously.

It's like when people freak out about a bad spring training start. Sometimes it's just about working on your pitches, not results.

Yeah, I'm not SUPER concerned about it. Pitchers can adapt, but he certainly will have to do that -- his pitching style isn't a perfect match for the type that can sustain some velocity loss. He isn't Mark Buehrle and that's why Coop keeps saying he needs to learn to pitch like him.

 

I don't see any reason, at the moment, to have him come back any sooner than the 30 days he's allowed to rehab though. Let's see how much velocity he can gain back and let him hit any speedbumps in AA/AAA rather than Chicago where we've had a pretty good run of starting pitching so far.

It's Trevor Bauer, even Keppinger could possibly draw a walk against him.

Many do. However, it's usually only the "cleanup" type surgeries. Danks was more involved than that but I still see no reason as to why he wouldn't.
