QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 25, 2013 -> 12:27 PM)
He mentioned Juan Pierre. Like that would have made up 3 games. Pierre was awful in August.

And his two years with us he was awful against RHP, putting up OPSs of .621 & .642. The idea was horrible back then and remains ridiculous now.

QUOTE (WilburWilhelm @ Jan 24, 2013 -> 10:08 PM)
I completely disagree. Any player that strikes out 222 times and bats .204 is a poor hitter in any spot in the order. Only two more long years till that bum is gone. The Sox would be better off batting Keppinger third.

I'm not dissing your intuition, I think it makes sense, too. But if you are working within the context of the players we have on our team, you are simply incorrect, factually. If you don't believe me, look up Tom Tango's research on batting order optimization by linear weights.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 25, 2013 -> 10:31 AM)
And yet, the Sox were in first place with two weeks to go, and he was hardly the only one who struggled in those final two weeks.

I can't even point to WAR or anything in this situation - if, like, 2 guys step up and play better, the Sox, at the very least, likely have a play-in game against Detroit. Instead, Detroit got hot, the Sox got cold, and they lost the division.

Exactly. It's one thing to evaluate in retrospect, but these decisions weren't made in retrospect, Marty. The Sox had this thing in the bag -- all they had to do was exactly what they had been doing thew entire season. By the time everyone knew it was over, it was already over.

At the very least, throwing AB after AB away in July, August, and September by not platooning Viciedo doesn't give me a ton of faith in Ventura.

Sticking with a young player while he's struggling so he can work through it and improve as a player? Especially during months like July and August. Maybe his monster September happened in part due to fighting through those struggles.

Yeah, consider my faith in Ventura lost.

I think Ventura would be one who knows about fighting through struggles as a young player

Robin Ventura seems like the person who would have a pretty good idea of how to handle a struggling young player...

Ha. Well done. You beat me to it.

I agree with Thigpen, I think this bullpen could be the class of the league this year.

A .730 OPS is "monster"?

When we're talking about replacing him with Juan Pierre....kinda.

I don't want a manager who puts development ahead of winning a division in August and September.

.896 OPS

No.

Viciedo - September - .896 OPS, best on the team, excluding Dan Johnson's 31 plate appearances

Take the last 3 games against Cleveland out, what's his OPS?

And Pierre, the guy Marty wanted to get to platoon with him had a .595 OPS in August so that wouldn't have made any difference.

Guilty, Dick Allen.

Take out all his good games, and I bet his OPS is s***. Cherry pick all you want.

BTW, it's probably the .730 as referenced earlier. That's still better than most of the team put up.

What was it against RH'ers?

There were many White Sox who were brutal down the stretch.

Our bullpen lost us 23 games last year, hopefully with Lindstrom, and no rotation of closer to start the year we can reduce that number by a good margin.

What he gets to ignore is that the more games he has to say don't matter, the fewer games there would have been for the mighty Juan Pierre to make a difference.
