The only thing tweeted was 84-87 in the first inning...but minor league guns are often a mess.

 

Worth noting though that he only struck out 1 batter.

They are hoping for couple of days. They'd like him to slide into the open slot on Saturday.

Ok, that's what I would have guessed, so saying we have a 4 man rotation isn't really accurate.

The readings had him between 84 and 87, but [barons broadcaster Curt]Bloom said that the stadium at new Regions Field was slow by a couple ticks, according to scouts and team officials who brought their own guns. He was willing to revise that number upward to 91, but 89 sounds more reasonable at the top end, given earlier reports.

His velocity was higher than that in extended right? Hopefully you're right about the guns.

89 mph, while not great, would be a pretty decent number at this point. Much better than those gun readings.

I also saw someone state that his velocity seemed to climb as the game went on.

We can't really expect Danks at 91-93 consistently, but if he's 86-89, there's such a smaller discrepancy between his fastball and offspeed stuff that he's really on the razor's edge as far as being effective, which means control/command and getting ahead in counts.

 

At 88-89-90-91, he should be okay....and we'll have to hope he gets that extra oomph back over time.

 

As long as he's not in the low 80's like Parque was when he came back.

 

 

And finally, sure, Santiago should have had enough time to warm up...but it's just different psychologically coming into a game because of an injury. Farmer said it...you feel that sense of hurry from the players and crowd, who are being impatient for the game to be started again because the majority of your warm-up pitches are going to be in front of everyone and not in the bullpen. It's something you learn over time, how to pace and handle yourself coming into unexpected situations, but that relief outing was so out of whack with the rest of his season's results, and it was also against a team not even particularly knowing for being an offensive juggernaut.

If Danks can't consistently pitch in the 90s, then he's going to have to reinvent his style of pitching. He's never had the type of control that made you think he could be successful as a finesse pitcher. I'll be very happy/pleasantly surprised if he can get his ERA in the 4.25 range or lower again.

Think about that in terms of Erik Johnson and Scott Snodgress. Erik Johnson has better stuff, so, in this example, you'd be hoping that Snodgress performed worse so Johnson got a shot. That's absolutely crazy. Nevermind the fact that Axelrod absolutely destroyed the minor leagues while Santiago clearly did not.

 

It doesn't matter anymore, they're both in the rotation now, for better or worse.

1/2 fastballs that sit in the low 90's, 1/4 cut fastballs, 1/4 changeups with the change as the outpitch to both righties and lefties. Occasional curve thrown in but not strong enough to notice.

He had a pretty nice curve coming up too, even in his first year, but he has pretty much long since abandoned that thing.

Yeah, he should bring it back (at least) against left handed hitters. There were times where he pretty much refused to throw an off speed pitch to lefties, it was so irritating.

Only a couple more injuries and Santiago will be the #1 starter.
