NBA Thread 2013-2014

You are starting a new franchise in Seattle. The NBA, in a strange move, says you can choose one of two players as your franchise cornerstone whose salary won't count against your cap. You can have Derrick Rose or Stephen Curry. You're an expansion team, so you don't have any existing pieces to consider in your choice.

Who do you choose?

Rose, relatively easily unless you're talking fantasy basketball. Curry is an amazing shooter, but he has several flaws. He's not a big threat on the drive, he's a pretty mediocre ball-handler/passer and he's a bad defender. He's SOOOO good at shooting that he can cover up most of that, but Rose is going to have a bigger impact with a league average cast around him.

If salaries count though, I'd be more inclined to take Curry. Rose would cost you $19.5 mil a year for the next 4, Curry is only going to cost you $11 mil a year. That's a pretty sizeable difference if you're trying to put together a contender.

Sounds like you just described Ben Gordon.

when was ben gordon SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO good at shooting that he could cover things up.

By sooooooooooooooo good Zoom meant "possibly the best pure shooter since Reggie, and likely better"

Yeah, Curry is quite a bit better than Gordon ever was.

That legendary series against the Celtics?

That legendary series against the Celtics?

woopteef***ing do. Curry did it over an entire season. Ok an entire career. Who cares about that series. The only thing that mattered was Rose's 36 point outburst in his first-ever playoff game.

He shot 38.8% in that series, and if you take out the 42 point game 2 it drops to 34.5%.

Ya comparing Curry to Gordon isn't cool.

Ray Allen says hi.

I don't know why people aren't surprised. He hasn't played team basketball in some time (and exhibitions aren't necessarily great indicators). This shouldn't really surprise anyone and with time he'll become a much better facilitator and this offense will start to look a heck of a lot better (and more efficient).

If you told me several months ago that he'd struggle out the gate, I wouldn't be surprised. It's surprising that he looked so sharp in the preseason and looks this way now

So, the alternate question. Is there some roster configuration that would make Steph the better fit?

In all fairness to Rose, he has played against the #1 and #2 seeds in the East last year. It doesn't really excuse the 1.7 PER he's putting up, but it hasn't been the easiest start by any means.

Rose did not get defended in the pre-season. He is getting defended now.

To be honest, I didnt think Rose really looked sharp in the preseason. His ball handling was obviously off, and like SS2K5 said, there wasnt much defense in the preseason. He was driving to the basket at will and still having some problems finishing.

He will knock off the rust, im not really worried about it.

The defense in preseason and the rotations are not near what he is seeing as the season started. He also didn't get many minutes with Noah either. And he showed explosiveness and scored in the preseason but also made quite a few real sloppy passes and poor decisions (from what I saw). I didn't mind them though because the explosion and the looks of an improved shot were there (as was the aggression). He's going to learn and things will come back and this team will soar to a title!

I'd strongly consider it if I had an elite wing that drives a lot or a big that draws a crowd down low. There aren't too many of those out there though.

If you have LeBron James, you prefer Steph Curry to Derrick Rose

I will agree with this. Also, I haven't seen ANY evidence whatsoever of this so-called 5 inch improvement in his vert.

Edit: not the title part. lol.

Unless he got a cyborg knee, highly doubt 5 inches to his vert was physically possible.

This myth was already busted. If his 42 inches is correct, it is only about 2 inches over his combine totals.

Math probably isn't one of his strong suits. He needed someone to take his SAT's to go to Memphis for f***'s sake.

Cool. A picture of you and Derrick Rose.

Wow. Philly about to be 2-0.
