Except Dunn's contract isn't really a sunk cost. That term doesn't apply when you have the possibility of removing the liability in the future. If Dunn plays even a little better than he did last year or in 2012, he's potentially a tradeable player, and perhaps one from whom we can scratch out a tiny bit of marginal value. The cost of his salary isn't sunk since there's potential to remove it. And the people saying "I don't want to pay him to play for another team" ARE regarding the cost of his contract as sunk. They are saying that if the money's getting paid out of our pockets no matter what, they'd rather keep his 30-40 HRs in Chicago.

 

And yes, the people paying for tickets absolutely have the right to behave like dicks. That doesn't make them not dicks.

He may be frustrating to watch (I'm with you there) but he doesn't actually cost us much during the rebuild. I guess it gives them the chance to move Viciedo to DH and keep De Aza but it might be too early for that anyway. Are you afraid he'll teach the new guys bad habits or something, or are your sensibilities so offended you just can't take him anymore?

I think he costs the team good will as we heard with the episode at Soxfest. I also think keeping him makes the organization look cheap in the eyes of the common fan and provides them with a reason to question the rebuild.

The sox really messed up here. Dunn has been hearing it from the fans for a while now because of his s*** performance and high salary, so wtf was the front office thinking when they asked Dunn to attend Soxfest? Talk about setting the guy up for failure. Bad idea by the Sox for asking, bad idea by Dunn for accepting.

It does not come with the territory to treat people like that. You can say they played bad, I'm sure he knows that, but to constantly treat him like that is wrong. Maybe it's just the parent in me but when people behave that poorly, you do have the right to tell them they should treat others with respect. It's just being civilized.

 

I think you are correct in your stand. Booing baseball players from other teams when they are in your house is one thing and can be considered part of the game-right or wrong. You don't boo your own or otherwise treat them with disrespect. Dunn knows the issues with his performance are wanting but the guy is trying to do his best. You can't tell me any player purposely doesn't perform. I read the posts and I just don't think this type of criticism and derision has a place and certainly is not acceptable in fans actions towards a player or even towards one of us on this board. Civility and courtesy and respect should be the rule

What's funny is that Dunn isn't even the worst player on the Sox but people hate him. People just hate strikeouts. Anyone that would have booed 19 year old Courtney Hawkins should have been blown up immediately though.

Everybody who plays with Dunn will know how he was treated at Soxfest. I'm sure that will help with free agent signings. I would expect humans to be humane to other humans even if they are bad ball players. I think it is a meat head move to treat a player badly at a fan convention. This is a guy who was regularly posting wRC+'s in the 130 to 140 range prior to signing with us. Last year he was paid $14M to post a wRC+ of 105 and provide negative value on defense. While some people may dislike him just for the strikeouts, I think most people hate him because he's a one-dimensional player who is no longer very good at that one dimension while making a f***ton of money.

 

On top of that, Dunn is a guy who publically acknowledges he does almost no offseason work and doesn't appear to be in good physical condition come Opening Day. That's fine when you are producing on the field, but once age starts catching up with you and your physical abilities start to decline, maybe said player should start putting some work in the offseason and actually try to earn his paycheck. And while I will never condone fans for attacking him at a fan convention, as that's some cowardly s***, I don't think he deserves any sympathy from us if he gets booed during games. I'm sure in the minority on that, but I don't think he's a guy who's given his all with us. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's honestly the way I see things.

Tickets can be had very cheap. They could lower prices and Sox fans still wouldn't go.
