i saw the pilot episode of LOST once, airplanes being lost forever could be a thing

Possibly found a piece of the plane in the Indian Ocean.

Was it planted by whomever took the plane?

Experts now think that the pilot deliberately crashed the plane into the ocean in a murder/suicide.  On the way, he flew over his hometown, which is chilling.  He alternated between Thai and Malaysian airspace so that neither would think they were responsible for the flight.
