Clearly w/ Tommy Hanson moving from extended spring training to Triple-A #WhiteSox feel he's healthy & ready. Wouldn't make move otherwise.

I think Tommy is next in line to get the 5th starter shot. Paulino can go on the 60 day DL for all I care.

Paulino was nothing more than a shot in the dark. I'm guessing they watched film of him with Coop, they found something they thought they could fix, and that they just had more interest than other people.

 

Let's not act like Paulino was to be the 5th starter for a division favorite. He's the kind of risk you take when you're in our place. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It didn't (yet).

One good thing is they know they need more pitching, and have known it for a while. I was reading about their concern a year ago.

Payroll is increasingly heading toward $4 a year. They'll have plenty of room to buy one on the FA market or trade for a well paid one (a la Peavy) once the team is actually competitive, whenever that is.

Well for starters, they traded Peavy and Santiago and replaced them with Erik Johnson and Paulino. The trades were good ones and made sense, but still doesn't mean it didn't destroy the pitching depth. As someone said earlier, it's fine the depth is bad because this team isn't trying to compete this year.

The good news is Sale, Q and Danks have been as good or better than we can hope. Johnson being a rookie is going to have his moments getting lit up. Paulino and the bullpen have been as Donald Trump would say, a total disaster. They traded their closer, and Jones got hurt, and the bullpen wasn't exactly lights out before that. Hahn has some work to do. At least so far, he is batting .000 with the veteran relievers he acquired unless you want to give him credit for Cleto.

What was the high reward with Paulino? Please use common sense. His career high in innings pitched was 139. What are the chances he blows through that after only making 7 starts in 2012 and 5 horrific minor league startd last season? And even if he was decent, what are the chances someone would give you something decent for him?

That's why there's a 2015 option on him. If he pulled off a couple solid months, you can decide wehther to move him or whether you think he could contribute to a team that cared in 2015.
