Anderson and Rodon top 100 prospects

Featured Replies

I would say Danish has elite stuff. Low 90s sinker with heavy, heavy sink, a swing-and-miss slider, and a changeup that is now being raved about as an awesome pitch. Last year, BA said his stuff was reminiscent of a young Tim Hudson or Jake Peavy. The sky is the limit for Danish. It's just a matter of convincing people of his longevity and overcoming being just a 6-footer, something Marcus Stroman faced coming out of college.

The fact that he's so young is a big part of the reason he shouldn't be in the top 20. A ball is so far away from the majors. If he continues to miss bats and get results next year at a higher level, you'll start to see some more love for your boy.

the fact that he is so young is what makes him even more promising, because hes a 19 year old kid that hasn't hit his physical maturity and he already has elite stuff and could stand to gain a tick possibly two on his fastball. His fastball is currently sitting where Jake Peavy's was in '07 during his CY year, theres a real possibility provided health isn't a factor that Danish gets a cup of coffee at age 20 with the potential to be in the rotation at 21 in '16

Promising, definitely. A top 20 prospect, no. I like him as a prospect, but so much happens between A ball and the majors. If he continues to perform as he's promoted, he will continue to get more love. For example, Nestor Molina had a 2.21 ERA and 10.2 K/9 in 2011 between A and AA. You don't see many people hyping him now.

EDIT: added more relevant example.

To be fair, though, Molina had nowhere near the prospect profile Danish has. Converted infielder becomes reliever and has one big year as a starter before AA wisely dumped him on us. Danish is a second round pick who has obliterated 2 levels before he turned 20. Apples and shinier apples.

Montas is at the same level and I hear far fewer doubts about him?

I'm excited for both.

I think being short is a big part of the national doubt about him. Funny motion AND a short guy? No likey. I tend not to care about height when present stuff is plenty good

I don't see anybody particularly doubting him per se, just people pointing out that saying Danish is a top 20 prospect is a bit extreme.

As far as why Danish isn't higher ranked, I don't think he had too much hype coming out of high school (admittedly, most likely due to the reasons Jake points out), and he doesn't exactly have the loudest peripherals to really overcome the sort of confirmation bias on these lists.

Didn't he have a 0 ERA his Sr. year ?

Something along those lines. I just don't remember him being really hyped by the people who make the top prospect lists. I could be totally wrong, though.

Both correct, he had a 0.00 ERA but didn't receive much pre-draft hype, most scouts seemed to think he was destined to be a reliever. If I recall correctly, of the 3 Top 100 draft prospect lists, he only made the back end of one of them, and was generally considered an overdraft in the mid-2nd.

It's nice to at least see that we have four legit mid-rotation or better starting pitcher prospects in our system now (Rodon, Danish, Montas, Adams). If Johnson gets his act together and Beck improves, you have two more back-end arms.

The video I saw of Rodon in Winston Salem was beyond impressive. That slider has some nasty movement on it and his fastball has some great late movement to it as well. I'm a boliever.

Montas is very exciting, of course. But a 62 inning season bookended by significant injuries should give all of us pause.

Danish' "doubts" stem from misplaced concerns about his frame - he's 205 lbs and looks plenty sturdy, just a little short - and obviously his unconventional but as yet non-problematic mechanics.

Yes, in one of the top HS districts for baseball in the country.

His mechanics scared most away, but Laumann was not to be deterred. I happen to believe that KMedeiros getting drafted 12th by the Brewers - which was about 20 places higher than I saw in any mock - might signal an end to funky-mechanics bargains like Danish. Time will tell.

Awesome.

Maggs, imo, correctly defined the group of our high-end potential starters as Rodon, Adams, Montas and Danish. We need at least two of these guys to be studs to fulfill our multiple WS fantasies.

Ya gotta like that we're getting the youngsters throwing quality changes at the lower levels. Both Montas and Danish have seemingly refined theirs this season to the point where they're considered plus offerings, and this has elevated their profiles greatly. The GIF of Montas' changeup from sometime in May was one of the finest things I've seen all year - up there with Arianny Celeste.

If two of them become studs along with Sale/Q, this franchise will be making MANY playoff appearances.
