Jose Abreu does the ice bucket challenge

I have no issues with the ice bucket challenge, nor do I have an issue with donating to ALS research, but I do want to go off topic for just a moment to plug the fact that over 10 times as many people die from prostate/breast cancer as ALS.

MLB has a prostate cancer awareness/funding tie in with Fathers Day ever year.

The my charity is better then your charity argument is a stupid. If anyone else wants to make similar posts as HH's, they will be removed. Each individual can donate to what causes they feel are right and shocker, they don't have to donate to just 1 cause either. But to tell other people or alude to other people that one is better then another is pure crap (and that is exactly what you did with your post). Don't pretend you know what other peoples experiences are and don't go in and belittle that. You want to raise funds for your cause, go do it and pub that, don't go in and take away from the positive movement the ice bucket challenge has done, which includes significantly increasing the money raised for ALS research (this year vs. last year is up X000% percent).

How many survive prostate/breast cancer v ALS?

Without getting into the one vs. the other, one of the true problems with ALS is that the medical community cannot figure it out. There have no significant advances since the time that Lou Gehrig died. Hopefully this new fund raiser gives the research a jump start and people with ALS hope.

That could actually be a reason why awareness campaigns are even more important. If lots of people have a disease or have a decent probability of getting that disease in their lifetime (or a loved one), there's going to be more outreach, funding, treatment, research etc.

I'm sure before this they received well over 10 times the amount of donations as well.

I hate this s***. Aside from the donation.

I did my challenge today and donated to ALS and Down Syndrome Association of NW Indiana. And honestly, without this challenge being a viral phenomenon, I probably would have never donated to ALS, so all the people who "hate how annoying it is" have no soul .

So you needed a viral, attention whoring event to become aware enough to make a donation, but everyone who had donated to ALS research before it existed is soulless if they are annoyed even a little bit. Gotcha.

I dont believe in souls but that is still a pretty ignorant and derogatory thing to say.

It is an honest post. They have 1.2 million first time donors since the challenge started, so he isn't alone either. It is way better than pretending he had always done this.

Why would someone who has donated to ALS research be annoyed by this? The only reason I can think of is that they are a huge narcissist who only donated in the first place to get some kind of credit for being someone who donates money.

As someone who is the President of a small not-for-profit organization, I can tell you first hand that a phenomenon like this is something that is dreamed about. Usually donations like this only follow tragedy. If this makes a few people feel good about themselves, all the better. Maybe that feeling will carry into future philanthropy. I can't imagine the need to look down on people for this. I'd be looking for a way to encourage it.

I have donated to ALS. I find this annoying. Its the narcissism (HEY LOOK AT ME!! ICE WATER!!!) that I find annoying. That's why its popular, because it appeals to the selfish (which are the masses). Overall its a very good thing, we agree. I just don't like watching the stupid videos. I don't find that part entertaining in anyway.

I'm kind of tired of your implied insults and closed mindedness. Believe it or not, you don't know why or how other people have formed their opinions.

I posted one time, why would you say you are kind of tired of my implied insults and closed mindedness after one post? That doesn't even make sense. As if I've been harping on these things for awhile.

I don't know exactly why you have formed your opinion, but it absolutely is the opinion of a dumbass. No non-dumbass would have it.

What are you some sort of donation hipster? "I donated to ALS before it was cool!"

Would you prefer those 12 million or so new donors take their money back? Didn't think so.

Hey everyone, chill out a bit (no pun intended).

As someone that did the Ice Bucket Challenge for ALS, had a member with ALS in my family and has donated to it in the past, I just would please ask everyone to be respectful of one another in this thread.
