to that end, what type of owner or ownership group could we expect to see, given all that we know about the state of the organization. would the sox an attractive option (major market, great opportunities) or terribly unattractive (bad television rating and attendance)? and what would you want to see in a new ownership group?

 

as a caveat, i'll acknowledge that reinsdorf could own the team for another decade, and the climate could be very different then. for the purposes of this discussion i'd say assume the situation is fairly similar to what it is now.

Several years ago, I knew a guy who knew Reinsdorf's son quite well. I posted on this site many years ago there were blueprints to build 3 structures in the parking lots, I was told they were bars but 2 of them were bars, one the Sports Depot. This was years before they were built. They didn't build the one on the other side of the park....yet. JR's son now runs the Bulls, and despite what you heard over the years, at least as of a few years ago, he also hoped to be in his dad's role with the White Sox. If you read the Tribune article years ago, JR's heirs will retain his power with the ballclub upon his death. (Which I hope is a long ways off) . I would expect his son to take over. It will probably be a different style. Probably a little less conservative.

Mlb would never let the sox move out of chicago. It's not something to worry about.

For a second, just looking at the title of this thread, I thought maybe good, 'ol Uncle Jer may have sold the team and I hadn't yet heard about it. Sigh.....one can dare to dream, can't he?

I've been led to believe that one of the present investors will take over the team from JR. There are supposedly 3 investors who want to take over the team if JR ever decides to sell.

Why would MLB care? Vegas is still an option. What about Memphis or New Orleans. Or somewhere in Canada? Or even Mexico?

That's what I was thinking. I think the Sox very easily could move when Jerry dies. It would be sad, though, to only have the Cubs. But if the Sox continue to suck as long as it appears they are going to suck, this team will have trouble drawing 15,000 a game. If this is another 99 loss season, it's really going to be dismal next year. One more 99 loss season after this one might spell crowds like the early 70s again. 2-3,000 a night. It gets that bad and you can bet they'll move when Jerry dies.

The Sox have a lease and other contracts. If there were cities that screamed huge profits, and the White Sox happen to be one of the more profitable teams in baseball according to Forbes, they would have a team by now.

All of them. Which tells me that there aren't any real palatable markets out there, or teams like Oakland and Tampa would be looking to move there.
