March 19, 201610 yr http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2016/03...ipe-out-gawker/ The stunning sum, which may have punitive damages added to it, is a life-threatening event for the New York-based network of news and gossip sites. Gawker media was one of the first successful, large digital-only news companies. The final sum is even more than the $100 million Bollea was seeking. Bollea also sued Gawker founder Nick Denton and former editor Albert Daulerio, and the jury found those two men personally liable as well. Dear lord.
March 19, 201610 yr Daulerio did them in by acting like a f***ing child at his deposition. Not sure what he was trying to accomplish other than entertaining himself but condoning the publishing of child porn while under oath lost them the case on the spot.

Yeah, not sure why he and Denton thought antagonizing the courtroom was a good idea.
March 19, 201610 yr 115 million and that's only the first part of the case from my understanding. This is awesome. Gawker needs to die. Edited March 19, 201610 yr by Buehrle>Wood
March 19, 201610 yr Author QUOTE (Tony @ Mar 18, 2016 -> 08:50 PM) Ironic this is Deadspin gold material.....yet nothing on the site... If it were any other media company, every Gawker site would have this.
March 19, 201610 yr QUOTE (Tony @ Mar 18, 2016 -> 08:50 PM) Ironic this is Deadspin gold material.....yet nothing on the site... Which is actually kind of surprising? I kind of expected them to at least have a blurb on this, Gawker has been posting leaks to the live broadcasts of the trial since the get go, I figured they'd at least throw up a half-assed post about losing. I suppose at this point it's all moot. Denton's gonna have to sell off assets to cover the $115M while he appeals so it feels like a sinking ship, no reason to be consistent at this point. I just hope Deadspin finds a good home, while I have my reservations with the site they're still solid, especially compared to the alternatives. I miss Leitch, even if he did invite in the eventual downfall that was Daulerio.
March 19, 201610 yr Deadspin has been mostly garbage since Leitch left, IMO, and that was awhile ago.
March 19, 201610 yr QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Mar 18, 2016 -> 09:06 PM) Deadspin has been mostly garbage since Leitch left, IMO, and that was awhile ago. What sports/sports media sites do you frequent that are better? Legitimately curious.
March 19, 201610 yr QUOTE (Tony @ Mar 18, 2016 -> 09:07 PM) Deadspin still is solid, and I actually really enjoy their video game site in the network, Kotaku. Also, Will found a good home Kotaku is excellent, Deadspin, Kotaku and io9 (to a lesser extent) are frequent reads for me. And yes, Will is in a good place.
March 19, 201610 yr QUOTE (Kalapse @ Mar 18, 2016 -> 09:08 PM) What sports/sports media sites do you frequent that are better? Legitimately curious. In the blog style of deadspin? None really. Barstool seems to be gaining tons of popularity as of late, judging by the number of times I get sent links to it. Seemingly too wacky for me. And Kotaku, man I think that may be my least favorite Gawker blog.
March 19, 201610 yr QUOTE (Tony @ Mar 18, 2016 -> 09:18 PM) Barstool is way more low-brow than Deadspin, even. You can find some funny stuff, but it's super absolute trash. Yeah that's the impression I get from it. I just stick to aggregators now (reddit works well here) and podcasts for commentary. In the end nothing will be the good old fashioned message board though.
March 21, 201610 yr Jury awards Hogan an extra 25 million in punitive damages. Edited March 21, 201610 yr by Buehrle>Wood
March 23, 201610 yr Good for the jury. Ridiculous that someone can honestly believe that a leaked sex tape of a celebrity is newsworthy and not subject to privacy rights.
March 23, 201610 yr QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Mar 23, 2016 -> 09:12 AM) The Gawker response Lot of sour grapes there.
March 24, 201610 yr QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Mar 23, 2016 -> 10:09 AM) Lot of sour grapes there. Absolutely. Glad to see a MAJOR victory for privacy. Gawker has been reckless for years, it was bound to catch up with them.
March 24, 201610 yr QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Mar 23, 2016 -> 09:12 AM) The Gawker response I can't believe a lawyer let them post this. Then again they probably didn't even ask.
March 24, 201610 yr QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Mar 24, 2016 -> 08:42 AM) Nick Denton will be on The View this morning Didn't help his cause
March 24, 201610 yr QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Mar 24, 2016 -> 01:58 PM) Can't Gawker and Hogan both just go away? Hulkamania will live forever.
March 24, 201610 yr Author QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ Mar 24, 2016 -> 02:22 PM) I would lol forever if ESPN somehow acquired Deadspin after all of this. I'd see The Ringer as more likely.
May 27, 20169 yr So the Hogan verdict and judgment amount were upheld this week. Denton just posted a letter to Thiel in what amounts to a whiny, inaccurate, freezing speech argument. Man, f*** that guy. You outed a rich person and didn't expect him to try and ruin you?
