4 dead.

Pic released of suspect isn't the shooter. He's seen in a video standing and ducking as shots started.

I just saw a video with him standing and walking around in the middle of everyone after the shooting so I don't think he was a shooter. I can't believe they even tweeted something like that just assuming since he was a black guy with a big gun he had to have done it.

Yeah, especially since the US is a very safe country, hardly any violence unlike other countries.

Mex, this is just f***ing brutal.

I think he's being sarcastic

I know what's he doing. It's borderline trolling.

Oh my god this is terrible.

CNN showing same video over and over and over of one cop being killed.

God I'm crying. Let's all do the best we can. Let us be the ones that try.

There's not even anything to say, besides prayers for the families involved.

All the political ramifications will surely play out in the days and weeks to come. You just wonder how many shootings like this the country can absorb without SOMETHING changing OR people just giving up completely and becoming apathetic and numb.

I pray for us all.

There is currently a standoff in the parking garage with a shooter and the police. Been going on for over 50 min

I think many are apathetic and numb both. I've seen some compassion in this thread, but normally I feel like as long as our families are not affected in these tragedies many scoff and say, "It's not that bad; we're still the best country in the world." I think we're in trouble as a nation. One of these is going to be the one that erupts all over the country on the same night with huge riots in most all the major cities. This one may or may not be that one.

This is terrorism. This is what terrorists do.

It isn't a war -- not black against blue, or us against them. When a reported two gunmen opened fire Thursday night on police officers, on our police officers, they attacked us all.

Stunned witnesses described a peaceful march with about 800 protesters gathered in downtown Dallas to register sorrow and concern over police-involved shootings this week in Baton Rouge and suburban Minneapolis.

They were escorted by about 100 police officers, our officers, there to act as protectors.

"The cops were peaceful. They were taking pictures with us and everything," one marcher told KXAS-TV Channel 5.

"It was a lovely, peaceful march," said another.

The peace was shattered by terrorism, a well planned and barbaric attack on that peace. In purposely murdering police officers, these gunmen did not further any cause or make any kind of statement that civilized people can understand. They opened fire, literally, on human decency.

In the days ahead, some apologists -- not many, but a few -- will take the line that these murdered officers are casualties of war.

They'll say this act was the culmination of countless provocations and frustrations; they'll try to frame some kind of context around this chaos. They'll say, "It's terrible, but ..."

No. It's just terrible. It's sickening, cowardly. It furthers no cause; it accomplishes nothing but misery and grief. It's violence for the deranged love of violence itself, disguised beneath a political veneer.

To employ a Texas colloquialism, it's chickens**t with a gun.

City officials and police departments train and drill and try to anticipate disaster, but how can you anticipate determined inhumanity? You can't, not if you're human.

Mayor Mike Rawlings looked frazzled and stunned during a brief television appearance late Thursday.

"At 8:58, our worst nightmare happened," he said wearily. The cliche is justified because it's factual. This is a nightmare: The nightmare of a terrorist attack at a peaceful, familiar street intersection where we have all been a thousand times.

This is one of those moments that is going to test all of us. Dallas, our home, is about to become famous again for all the wrong reasons. It's going to be a shorthand for chaos.

We've been there before.

Today, we have a choice. We can let somebody else write the script, tell us that some of us are victims, and some are perpetrators; tell us which camps we're in and whose side we're supposed to be on.

Or we can unite in our shared shock and sorrow. We can all choose the side of decency and humanity. We can reject home-grown terrorism, mourn our fallen and support our wounded. We can wrap our arms around the community we share, and make our message clear:

Terrorism can hurt us. On Thursday night, it did.

But it doesn't win. This is our city, and we won't let it.

Latest I just heard is 5 police dead and the shootout is over.. One of the shooters claimed there are explosives all over Dallas.. This is just insane. It will be all out war on our streets soon.

It isn't borderline. But I'm not biting, either.

Four possible shooters and only one in custody. f***

This is sounding like a professional terrorist attack with their tactics, armor, weapons. I wonder if the suspects will be ex military.

Ok now I read three in custody and one dead.

Why is all that s*** available to the public? It's crazy to me.

I am also wondering what the NRA will say about this happening in an open carry state. Clearly even protesters armed with rifles couldn't do s***.

Whenever I wake up to a dozen AP news alerts on my phone, I know it won't be good :(

Just awful. And FWIW, the Dallas PD leadership is among the most transparent and forward-thinking in the country.

Just saw an update on NBC 5, 12 officers shot, 5 dead, 1 suspect dead, 2 in custody. No mention of other suspects still out there.
