  1. QUOTE(Wedge @ May 31, 2007 -> 03:18 PM) Congrats on career suicide Billy D. I dunno, Pitino's managed to salvage his fairly well.
  2. You know, I really don't have a big problem with this. On this level, it's a private business presumably, they should be able to refuse service to anyone. Not sure how I'd react if it was a bar banning the handicapped or something like that, but lots of businesses provide different services based on sex, for example (ladies night!).
  3. Of course...you're sort of ignoring the key point...the ACLU only gets its attorney fees paid for if it wins a case. If an opponent actually has a valid case, then they won't be paying for the ACLU's attorneys. The issue of course is that it actually is constitutionally problematic for the government to be endorsing one type of religion over another, etc, so there's always a reasonable shot that if someone does something stupid, like insist that this government building needs to have a cross on it's front otherwise Jesus will hate America, they will lose. In other words...don't put the stuff there if you're not constitutionally sure. It's really not that hard to read the recent court decisions to figure out where the court will come donw.
  4. Joe Mauer is still too sore to play yet it appears.
  5. Jason Giambi is out for 3 weeks with torn tissue in his left foot. This includes, obviously, his series against us. Yadier Molina to the DL for a month with a broken wrist. Jamie Walker named his son Jim Leyland. Walker, of course, is now in Baltimore.
  6. This thing just so loves to give slightly blurred images...
  7. QUOTE(caulfield12 @ May 31, 2007 -> 10:51 AM) You'd have to trade Thome, move Konerko to DH and make Teixeira the starter at 1B. Once again, a reminder folks: Jim Thome has a full no-trade clause. He waived that clause originally only on the grounds that he would go to Chicago or Cleveland.
  8. MSNBC , last November. Sweet!
  9. QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ May 31, 2007 -> 10:17 AM) And that would be the only one of the 10 that wasn't an individual right? You are correct that that is the arguement of the ACLU, I just find it convenient that they interpret that one right as a collective one, when all the rest are individual rights. They read the first ammendment so generally so as to allow a casual mention of religion to somehow constitute 'establishment', but yet try to be so literal with the second. Just out of curiosity, how often does the NRA bring suits regarding unreasonable search and seizure or freedom of the press? Isn't an organization free to define its motives however it wants? Hey here's a thought. If you don't agree with the way the ACLU interprets the Constitution, or you don't agree with the cases it chooses to take up...then don't contribute money to them and don't join it! I may not agree with the way the NRA interprets the 2nd amendment, but I don't spend every waking moment watching for mid-level NRA execs who wind up misusing guns, and I don't think that one NRA guy misusing a gun would be a sign that the NRA is either right or wrong about anything.
  10. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ May 31, 2007 -> 10:21 AM) This ought to be an interesting test of the new, tougher disipline rules. Will they actually step forward and give Vick a suspension of at least half of a season for this stuff? I hope so, otherwise its not worth a damn. I think it depends on the criminal case that winds up coming out of it. If no charges are ever brought, can the NFL seriously suspend him? What happens if charges are brought, he's suspended, and then winds up not guilty for some reason? I don't think his season this year is going to be in jeopardy at all, but depending on the court case, his 08 campaign could really be.
  11. QUOTE(caulfield12 @ May 31, 2007 -> 09:48 AM) And that our payroll would be adjusted back to 2005 levels...$70-80 million. And KW would have to swallow and laugh off his comments about being a championship organization that reloads, any similarities to the Braves or Yankees, competing w/ the Cubs for the heart of the city's fans, etc. I'm just not sure how easily he can protect his ego after being on top in 2005. I think he still is in "add" mode rather than subtract. The only thing that I see that is stopping us from staying competitive is the poor performance of the minor leaguers we've tried to plug in. It's ok to be in constant-rebuilding mode if you're like the Braves and the guys you're sticking in are guys like Francouer, Willie Harris, etc. and you're making trades for people like Renteria. Our biggest problem is that very few of the guys we've tried to plug in so far, i.e. Anderson, Sweeney, and Fields, have seemed ready for the show. All 3 of these guys seem like they should have a ton of talent and be the type of players we could stick in and have success with them if they were taught right, and if we could have been gradually plugging those guys in, it would have given us the payroll flexibility to fill needs in other areas. We can successfully reload if these guys are actually bullets, and not say, big cement bricks.
  12. Congrats to the NBA on re-assembling 1/2 of the NBA Finals no one wants to see.
  13. Nuke, just something I was wondering about...how much interaction do you have with the private security types that are over there? Like the guys from Blackwater, etc.? How do the army regulars feel about guys like those?
  14. When is the last time Anderson got a hit?
  15. Didn't one of our guys, I think it was Uribe, do exactly that in a Cubs/Sox series like 2 years ago?
  16. Most important players for the future: 1. Danks 2. Gio 3. Anderson 4. Sweeney 5. Fields 6. Konerko 7. Jenks 8. Russell 9. Vazquez 10. Contreras Justification: I think for the future, 1 and 2 are obvious. They're clearly our 2 best young pitching prospects, and excellent young starting pitching is the single formula for remaining competitive. 3-4-5 - our young position players. And I start with Anderson here, because he's the guy I still think we need to get something out of, somehow. We have a hole right now that he should be filling and is not, and as a 1st round pick, that's really bad. If we can't get something out of him, then that's another blown 1st rounder, and you just can't keep winning if your first rounders blow up every year. Especially when you draft them for the most important spot in the OF. Sweeney fits in next, because next year, we're going to have 2-3 outfield holes. We need Brian to fill one of them, we need Ryan to fill the other. Fields fits in after that, because we have Joe for at least 1 more year after this one, so we at least have some flexibility. All 3 of those guys fit into those slots because we are really desperate for some cheap, young position players. If we can fit in a few of those guys, then suddenly we have the money to go after bigger guys to fill holes that show up. Konerko and Jenks are pretty obvious. They're here now and should be here for several more years. Russell has pitched himself onto this list, which is a good thing. He should keep rising. Vazquez and Contreras...once again, it's the Starting Pitching dominates all matter. You have good starters, you are a good team. And these are the other 2 guys we have who are actually locked up beyond the end of 2008, so they have no choice but to be on this list.
  17. QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ May 30, 2007 -> 07:07 PM) our starters have an 8.58 ERA since Danks last won Our lineup is at least hitting .266 for the last 7 days, that's something, right?
  18. QUOTE(WhiteSoxfan1986 @ May 30, 2007 -> 09:58 PM) bush league. I hope they drill him. I don't think it's bush league at all...and I think the Jays ought to plunk him the next time out. It's only fair.
  19. QUOTE(DrunkBomber @ May 30, 2007 -> 10:50 AM) Also, do some straight bar benching but with a really wide grip. The closer together your hands are the more it works your tris. You know, I tried this today, and it really felt like it made a difference. Nicely done, thanks. For the folks who were talking about lat pulldowns earlier, have any tips on technique for that? Alwasy wondered if i was doing those anywhere close to correct.
  20. You know, this reminds me so much of that episode of the Simpsons where Maggie is born. And Mr. Burns decides to give Homer the Plague, I mean the Plaque...which reads...Don't forget, you're here forever.
  21. Jose Contreras for Esteban Loaiza worked out pretty well.
  22. No, No, No. None of them. Terrible idea for all of them. If Floyd can't kick it as a starter give him a shot as a reliever next year maybe, maybe if Haeger ever finds a groove and has a good month we can talk, but not even close right now.
  23. I think we can safely say Boone has had a great series. Can we say that about anyone else?
