  1. QUOTE(SoxAce @ Aug 29, 2007 -> 03:09 PM) I'd rather nail Adam Archuleta's girlfriend. Aren't you under arrest?
  2. Didn't David Duke actually run for the Republican nomination a while back?
  3. Esteban Loaiza claimed off of waivers by the Dodgers. The Dodgers will assume over $1 million of his salary this year and $6.5 million of his salary next year.
  4. 2 years ago today...John McCain turned 69 years of age.
  5. QUOTE(iamshack @ Aug 29, 2007 -> 10:26 AM) That's understandable. What would the next best case be then, assuming it will take that kind of a deal to sign Hunter or Jones? IMO, it's to spend our money and talent acquiring someone who can play shortstop and actually give us real offensive and defensive production out of that slot, and accepting the fact that our OF next year will therefore have a weak spot with the bat in CF. We can cover for that spot to some extent if we get better production out of LF (Josh) 3rd (a healthy Crede) and SS (anyone, and I mean anyone other than Uribe) and if Richar can hold the fort with the bat at 2nd next year.
  6. So how did Gavin actually look last night? At least pulled off a quality start according to the stats.
  7. Senator Tim Johnson makes his public return after surviving a stroke late last year.
  8. The Idaho Statesman has published a transcript of an interview with a man who says he engaged in sexual activities with the Senator in a Men's room in Washington's Union Station.
  9. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 28, 2007 -> 06:37 PM) That's kind of the idea. Players with talent and a possible future in the majors but who need some specific work... play in the fall league. Dude, when will you learn, if a rookie comes up and doesn't immediately throw a perfect game or hit 4 homers in a game...he's garbage and should be tossed aside. No one ever develops more.
  10. QUOTE(Brian @ Aug 28, 2007 -> 07:00 PM) Linebrink has been bad for Milwaukee. So, Josh Fields for Scott Linebrink anyone?
  11. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Aug 28, 2007 -> 03:59 PM) John Smoltz is a consumate professional and team player. He's as tough as nails. He beat the Astros in the playoffs with his shoulder aching beyond belief and put himself out of the playoffs with his gutsy performance, should the Braves have advanced that year. Today he's pitching on short rest against the Marlins for the Braves. I appreciate his willingness to go, considering his age and he IS a power pitcher, and it's nice that the Braves have a guy who they can go to in situations like these who can and will go out and do all he can, but I question the soundness of such a decision. I'm not sure I believe they'll make it to the playoffs (I am almost certain they won't win the division this year), considering their rough rotation past Smoltz/Hudson, but I guess they really do, and they're going to battle, and Smoltz thinks it's worth it. Good for him. I can't believe I went a long time with Smoltz as my LEAST favorite of the Big Three. I expect the Braves to be really good next year with someone like Silva or Livan Hernandez in the 3/4 spot, probably a big trade, a fresher bullpen (volatile though they can be, certain teams are good at building bullpens and the Padres/Braves are those), and a good lineup. Should be interesting to see. Given Turner Field's reputation as something of a pitcher's park that can cut down a little bit on home runs...I think the Braves and Sox would be an ideal match for a Jon Garland for a shortstop type swap. Esp. given that JS has to expect he'll lose Tex after next year, and thus may have to do a genuine rebuilding program.
  12. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Aug 28, 2007 -> 01:48 PM) What are the pitching matchups? I've now had two teachers (not even counting yesterday!) refer to this upcoming series, so I guess it's a big deal. I've tried my best to keep my head in the sand, what with these f***ing jamoke Cub rooters wearing the preppy Cub hats -- note that if asked to name the 25 man roster, I could probably name as many or more players than the average fan. Not that these Brewer fans are a whole lot better, but I'm not sure the Brewers would have enough to beat any team in the first round of the playoffs, so... Suppan vs Hill ????? vs Zambrano (Vargas scheduled to go, but just put on the DL today, MLB.com actually suggesting it could be Sheets) Gallardo vs Lilly
  13. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Aug 28, 2007 -> 12:42 PM) I hope he's more successful than BOOR-chard. BTW, the headline on whitesox.com is Floyd takes the reigns as White Sox go south. I wonder if they thought about that one before they put it up. Running for the Senate from Idaho.
  14. QUOTE(LVSoxFan @ Aug 28, 2007 -> 11:41 AM) So we'll give it one more year before heads roll? I guess I could go along with that. I think that's a logical thing to think. One thing people tend to underestimate in all sports, IMO, when calling for heads to roll in a front office is that as systems stay in place, if they are quality...they often improve with time. It may take time to overcome specific issues, and decisions and personnel choices may not always work instantly, but if you have a good system, you should gradually see improvement. Another 70 win season next year, and I think everyone will admit that at least the lower level figures need shuffled.
  15. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Aug 28, 2007 -> 10:00 AM) So is this going to be the next trend for athletes? Drink while drunk, crash your car, leave the scene until you sober up, then admit to a single car accident. Somehow, I doubt most drunk athletes who drive home will be able to plan well enough for them to only have a single car accident.
  16. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 28, 2007 -> 09:41 AM) Fields to SS? Where did you hear that rumor? I would rather see Richar, Ozuna or any number of other people on the team at SS before Fields. That would be brutal. Fields has some great skills, but he isn't even an average third baseman. Someone started a thread on it like a week or two ago here...not sure it was even anything worth classifying as a rumor.
  17. QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Aug 28, 2007 -> 09:24 AM) Maybe his stall was out of Charmin? When have you ever been in a public bathroom that actually used that high of quality toilet paper?
  18. QUOTE(Beastly @ Aug 28, 2007 -> 07:26 AM) Is there any way that Uribe could be bought out and come back with something like Frank Thomas had, that diminished skills clause? I mean, I know he wouldn't want a paycut, but who wants a guy with numbers like he does? His weight is obviously taking away from his talent. I'd take Uribe back in a heart beat over Vizquel, Eckstein or Izturis. One guy I'd like the most out of anyone is Tony Graffanino, but I'm sure he wouldn't come back here after how we treated him. A-Rod is just a pipe dream at best, IMO. Uribe is already under contract for next year. Either the Sox pick up his $5 million option, or the Sox let him walk. If the Sox don't want him @ that price, they can't really offer him arbitration either, so he'd hit the FA market, and it's highly doubtful that Uribe would sign with the Sox for what we all think he's worth, which isn't very much right now.
  19. QUOTE(Steff @ Aug 28, 2007 -> 08:40 AM) Ahhh... I see. So is unlocking - hacking - it a criminal offense? Sidenote, my AT&T Treo worked just fine from Costa Rico in May. Thanks to one of the worst laws passed regarding the digital age...it sure appears that it could be. PCWorld link
  20. QUOTE(Steff @ Aug 28, 2007 -> 08:18 AM) Why such a big deal to unlock it? Right now, the iPhone can only be used on AT&T's network...which does 2 things. One, you have to deal with AT&T's notably crappy service. And two...AT&T's service is not useful internationally. There is at least one other service in this country compatible with the iPhone's hardware...if you can unlock it...and there are international carriers that are also. So if you want to be able to use the phone overseas, or use another network other than AT&T's, his procedure seems to be what you need to do. Therefore, there is at least a non trivial amount of money in it for a company that does nothing other than unlock and sell iPhones to people.
  21. Point 1. Jim Thome continues to have a full no-trade clause, and there have been no rumors that he's interested in changing that situation. Point 2. If the White Sox need a DH next year not named Thome somehow...his name is Jermaine Dye.
  22. QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 27, 2007 -> 04:57 PM) By far, most important homer in Sox history. I will go to my grave personally thinkin the Rally Crede shot eclipsed all of those. Yes, it was the regular season...but by my line of thinking...the White Sox do not make the playoffs in 2005 without that shift of momentum.
  23. QUOTE(whitesoxfan99 @ Aug 27, 2007 -> 05:24 PM) I would pull him from the rotation. Tonight was probably his last chance.
  24. I love it...taking a simple thing like "Number of cloture votes per term of Congress" and saying it's biased because the person who puts together the graphic thinks its noteworthy that the most legendary filibusters in Senate history were the ones related to civil rights, and therefore the data is useless. You don't have to argue against any of the actual data presented, you don't have to present a counterpoint, you don't have to give anything else...you just say you don't like the source, and voila...you've proven me wrong again! What a way to win an argument. I'm done with this thread.
  25. QUOTE(beck72 @ Aug 27, 2007 -> 04:08 PM) Rowand's numbers are almost identical to Byrnes--hence the same type of contract. Just because Byrnes took that deal does not mean that that is the best deal Mr. Byrnes could have gotten on the open market.
