  1. I actually really like Toronto usually, feels so dirty rooting for the Royals, but you gotta do what you gotta do.
  2. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 06:17 PM) Hopefully the Yankees and Jays both beat up on each other or the Yankees just obliterate the east. Whatever happens at least we are in a position to scoreboard watch for a bit. If you think about it the Jays, with all that talent, are 1.5 games ahead of the Sox in a weaker division. If they are going all in, shouldn't the Sox at least consider adding a solid piece? The Jays have position player mashers, but the Sox have (suddenly) defense and elite (whole season really) pitching. As much as we b**** about Danks, most teams would be absolutely over the moon to have a rotation of a half seasoned Rodon as the 4 with Sale, Shark, Q out front and Danks as the 5th wheel. Yea they have some weaknesses in the pen in the 6th and 7th but if the offense keep up that will be minimized, which is what Hawk never seems to realize. Hahn and KW both know a bat is going to be worth more than another middle reliever and an elite reliever isn't worth the assets it would take. Toronto is only 0.5 game ahead, not 1.5 games.
  3. FWIW, Longoria didn't even make the top 50 in trade value on Fangraphs. He was below Jorge Soler. Would you give that package up for Soler? I understand he's the face of their franchise, but that just pushes the price into the "not worth it" territory. No thanks.
  4. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 06:06 PM) Fair enough, but he's really fallen off recently. I suppose he still has value given his contract, but not nearly what he once had. His defense has fallen off, his offense has fallen off in 3 of the past 4 years. Given this trend, and the mileage on him, I wouldn't be surprised to see him battle injuries and continue a general decline over the next several years. Does he have value? Yes...but is the disparity THAT large? And worth THOSE types of packages? Not to me. I agree, there's enough red flags about him to make me not want to empty the farm for him, especially considering he's not particularly young or particularly cheap anymore.
  5. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 04:14 PM) This is the dilemma. If they compete with the Yankees this weekend we'll know better but of course, the deadline will have passed. People keep bringing up the Cardinals games but we were one 8th-inning blown lead away from going 3-1 against them this season, or do the two we took from them in St. Louis fairly recently not count? We were two inches from splitting with the Royals. We've also taken series from Baltimore, Toronto (3 out of 4, and we held their offense to 10 total runs) and the Cubs recently.
  6. I feel like Upton would require someone like Adams, and with the way Upton has been hitting the last two months that could have disaster written all over it. Pass.
  7. If he didn't have that contract he'd be a decent buy-low candidate I guess. But this isn't the first year he has been terrible at the plate (2013 he was bad as well) and he's not coming cheap so hard, hard pass.
  8. QUOTE (Knackattack @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 10:51 AM) That would put a damper on our WC dreams... And it would strengthen Detroit in the future. I'm hoping Detroit wins today and stays pat.
  9. Why in the hell would we get a SP? That's the last thing we need, unless we're trading Q for a bat.
  10. QUOTE (Mike F. @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 10:41 AM) I'd drop Flowers honestly. Soto can hit at the very least and his defense is ok. Flowers isn't particularly good at anything besides being Sale's personal catcher. He's one of the best pitch framers in the game, I assume that's why he starts so often.
  11. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 10:17 AM) Not disagreeing with that but there's absolutely no guarantees in baseball, we can absolutely lose this game even though it's a mismatch on paper. I agree with you, and that's why I'm similarly worried about tonight. It seems like every week there's a really lopsided matchup that goes the underdog's way.
  12. QUOTE (SouthSideSale @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 10:13 AM) People arguing Gomez over CarGo are nuts lol. When healthy CarGo is a superstar. Gomez is not. Gomez was worth 7.5 fWAR in 2013 and 5.7 fWAR in 2014 (8.5 and 4.8 if you go by bWAR). Only year Gonzalez has matched that was 2010 (5.8), Gomez is better.
  13. A few weeks ago it was a major sellers market, now it's a huge buyers market, especially for SP. Even if we wanted to trade Samardzija I highly doubt we get anything that great in return.
  14. I just don't see any chance Urias goes for 2 months of Price. How is a top 5 prospect in all of baseball worth a rental? Seems like BS to me.
  15. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 09:22 AM) I don't want to be a wet blanket, but this 7-0 run has come against two really, really awful teams. I want to see the Sox take a series from Tampa or NY before I get too excited. The Phillies and Rockies are really, really awful teams, I wouldn't put Cleveland on that level, they were 45-48 when we started playing them. Also even the worst teams in baseball win ~40% of their games, it's really hard to win seven games in a row against anyone, and we're kicking the s*** out of both these teams. Boston's pitching is s*** but Cleveland has a great pitching staff and we pounded their pitchers too.
  16. This game feels like as close to a guaranteed win as you can get in baseball, we can't afford to blow this.
  17. I'd like Bruce too, but I'm not sure we'd get him at a reasonable price. He'd likely cost a decent amount in prospects.
  18. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Jul 29, 2015 -> 10:49 PM) Man the Sox are on fire. They have to be the best baseball team of the past week. It should be an interesting deadline but I would not want to be in a GM shoes. Personally I'd white flag the s*** out of this. You'd white flag a season when we're 2.5 GB of a playoff spot (2 in the loss column) and have by far the best pitching of any team we're competing with for that spot? Who are you going to sell off besides Samardzija? Is it worth giving up on this season just to get a couple B prospects?
  19. QUOTE (Baron @ Jul 29, 2015 -> 10:34 PM) Why does everyone assume buying means emptying the farm or "selling out"? You can make a trade without giving up a boat load of prospects Plus there are options that can help beyond just this season.
  20. QUOTE (NCsoxfan @ Jul 29, 2015 -> 10:19 PM) Why is the baseball prospectus playoff probability still so low? It says 8% It's based a lot on run differential. So while we're +35 over this winning streak the overall number is still crappy. I wouldn't put too much stock into that number, considering we were putting up that horrible run differential when we couldn't hit s*** and our defense was awful. Both have improved, which the formula doesn't account for.
