8.3 Rays @ White Sox 7:10 CT
We should have taken 2 out of 3 in Tampa but got swept instead. This game has the same feeling as those 2 losses.

Sox have tried to sign Samardzija to a long term deal
When was the last time a 30-year-old pitcher was signed to a big contract and was actually worth the money?

Sox have tried to sign Samardzija to a long term deal
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 2, 2015 -> 06:36 PM) We'd be better off with Daniel Norris or Jeff Hoffman. Oops. Now someone inevitably will post a critical review of Hoffman despite it being his first month back from TJ surgery...which historically has required 18-24 months to be back at 100% or better. 0% chance the Sox could have had one of those guys for Samardzija.

AND THAT'S A WHITE SOX WINNER!!!
Eaton's OPS is now higher than last year. Amazing.

White Sox make no trades at the deadline.
I really don't think Samardzija would have gotten us much, he's a step down from Cueto/Price, a lot of buyers were off the market today, and the package for Kazmir was pretty blah, I'm not too disappointed if that was what we missed out on. I know the comp pick could very well end up being nothing but at least we're getting something out of it, I'm not really that convinced that the package we could have got for Jeff was >>> than the value of the comp pick. Also, I think Upton is very overrated and Cespedes would have required an Anderson or Montas, no thanks.

The Disappointment Thread
I'm not terribly disappointed, at least when it comes to buying. If we were 4-7 games over .500, then yeah I might consider giving up a good prospect for a guy like Cespedes, but given where we are and how much better the Blue Jays got, I would have hated that move. I think we waited too long to sell Samardzija. It was a seller's market, then suddenly it became a huge buyer's market, then all the teams that needed a SP got one, so I doubt there were very many good offers for him on the table today. I think we still need to evaluate Johnson as a candidate for next year's rotation, so I'm still hoping he replaces Danks in the rotation. Since we kept Shark, if we start losing again, it's going to really suck to not have any idea of how Johnson will do in the rotation going forward. You don't want to make that decision in Spring Training in 2016. But if the offers for Samardzija weren't great (and I don't think they were), this wasn't really that bad IMO.

Cespedes to the Mets according to Levine
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 12:48 PM) Nationals fans will be elated to have LaRoche back! Yeah wait I thought the deal sucked for us but the Nationals absolutely gain nothing from that deal and Joe Ross looks good.

Cubs Acquire Dan Haren
QUOTE (Mike F. @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 12:29 PM) That's a major downgrade from Tyson Ross. He's a lot better than Beeler though.

Non White Sox Rumors
QUOTE (shipps @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 12:06 PM) I'm not really surprised. You have to figure everybody want the guys that are known and don't want to trade with the Cubs for the second tier prospects. And the Cubs arent going to trade those premier guys, atleast not this year. And nobody wants Castro. They still have like 5 Top 100 prospects though plus Baez. I know Baez was really really bad in his short stint last year but they do have the pieces to make a deal.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 11:32 AM) You guys are all young whipper snappers. I was 8 years old in 1959 when I first started following baseball and the White Sox were my team. My first baseball glove was a Nellie Fox model. I'm just young enough (and started being a big fan late enough) to miss almost the entire Frank Thomas era unfortunately, especially his best years.

Samardzija Trade Packages
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 10:32 AM) If somebody rivals the package that Detroit got for Price, then yes, trade him, but I don't think anybody is going to offer that much. +1

Sox Looking at Upton
QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 10:31 AM) Adage to remember today (from one GM): Buyers make more mistakes than sellers because buyers are more emotional. Sellers are more Sounds like a Rick statement. Well it's true. Buyers are desperate, sellers are not.

Sox Looking at Upton
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 10:16 AM) Rentals are going for a lot. I understand that, but I also am not that high on Upton, I'd rather get Cespedes if we're getting a rental, but ideally I wouldn't want a rental at all.
-
Sox Looking at Upton
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 10:03 AM) I'll take my chances. I have no faith in Frankie to be a mainstay in our future rotation so I'll take my 2 months rental over what I see as a future reliever. Even if you have no faith in Montas he certainly has more value than a 2-month rental. Trade him to get a bat locked up beyond this year if you're going to move him.

Sox Looking at Upton
QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 09:57 AM) I don't believe they would either but he might be on the short list of our top prospects along with Montas with whom to trade for a non rental. Actually our top 5 prospects could all be top 100 guys if they hadnt either faltered some ( Eric Johnson ) or been brought up(Micah Johnson) Montas, Anderson, Fulmer all in MLB Pipeline's top 100 plus EJ used to be until his meltdown but has come back very strong and Micah would be quite high if only he could field decently. Micah still qualifies as a prospect, he's just not a top 100 guy. EJ no longer qualifies as a prospect, if he did he'd likely be on there.

Sox Looking at Upton
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 09:07 AM) I'd like to see some statistical proof of that. I feel this is more of a AAAA phenomenon. https://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prosp...s/all-time#1990 Dominating the minors would probably put you in the top 20 prospects in all of baseball. I'm not saying EJ is a top 20 guy (he was #63 in 2014), especially because his dominating stretch is still a pretty small sample size, but I was more making an overall point about dominant minor league numbers. I went through that list from 1990-2000 and 45% of the prospects ranked in the top 20 played at least 1000 games (goes over 50% if the cutoff is down to 900 games instead of 1000) and that's not even counting all the pitchers who don't get that high but definitely did enough to stick around. 900-1000 games is 6+ seasons, I think that qualifies as sticking at the major league level.

Sox Looking at Upton
QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 08:57 AM) Sorry forgot to tune in to his triple a starts to watch him tear up minor leaguers. So his utter dominance down there means nothing? Really? Guys who completely tear up AAA stick at the MLB level more often than not. Even if you don't believe in EJ, his turnaround has increased his value quite a bit. If we wanted to trade him, we could do a lot better than an Upton rental.
-
Sox Looking at Upton
QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 08:47 AM) EJ sucks Shows how much you've followed him over the last year. He was a top 100 prospect a year ago after a very good 2013, but got knocked around a bit last year due to a loss in velocity for unknown reasons. His velocity has returned this year and he's dominated with good strikeout numbers and he's given up 1 earned run in his last 47 innings. Clearly that's worth trading for two months of an overrated Upton.
-
Sox Looking at Upton
QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 08:40 AM) I disagree I think EJ is disposable. He's a 4-5 pitchers in a rotation that will include Sale, q, Rodon, possibly Fulmer. 4-5 starters can be found anywhere. Trading EJ is like trading Clayton Richard EJ has the potential to be a pretty good #3 pitcher. We traded Richard for several seasons of Jake Peavy. The scenarios are not even close to being the same, and EJ is better than Richard. Upton is a 2-month rental and he's hit like complete s*** the last two months (under .600 OPS). EJ would be a massive overpay.

7/31 White Sox vs Yankees 7:10 PM CT
What's a normal age to start following a team as a die-hard? I'm 25 but my first season following the White Sox all the way through was the 2004 team. I guess I was a late bloomer.

Sox Looking at Upton
QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 08:31 AM) Montas and Adams would be tough but EJ sure. Plus I think if we get Upton we are getting something else back. Whether it's Kennedy or Middlebrooks. But we will have to part with a prospect or two that we like its just part of the game. Why would you trade EJ for a rental? We need him for our rotation for the next several years. That makes zero sense. That would be a really terrible move, even if we were 10 games over .500.

So the Astros might acquire a 3rd SP? Damn they're really going for it.

Sox Looking at Upton
If we're going to trade someone like Montas or Adams, I'd much prefer a guy who will be here longer than 2015.
