not sure there is much going on here... probably just up for a day or two while Thornton is gone.

With the way the Sox work though... who knows.

White Sox Promote Randy Williams from AAA Charlotte

By Jason Gage

SoxNet

The White Sox have reportedly promoted LHP Randy Williams from AAA Charlotte. Williams will join Matt Thornton, who has returned to Minnesota after attending the birth of his child, as the lefties in the Sox pen. No official word on who Williams will replace on the White Sox roster but SoxNet is hearing that Bartolo Colon, who was scratched (elbow) from tonight's start will be placed on the 15 day disabled list, retroactive to July 24th.

Williams, 33, has made 38 major league appearances (San Diego, Seattle, and Colorado) and posted a 6.68 ERA. In 33 games with the Charlotte Knights (AAA), Williams was 3-0 with a 3.44 ERA and limited opponents to a .220 batting average.

SN Take:

• With Colon scheduled to go back on the disabled list, Clayton Richard is expected to rejoin the rotation.

• Williams will give Ozzie the added flexibility of having two lefty relievers in the pen that he can count on (or at least that's what the Sox hope). He had Poreda for a while but it was clear that Ozzie didn't feel comfortable calling the young lefties name in a pressure situation and that is why we see Williams up as opposed to the more promising Poreda.

Can someone fill us in on what to expect from him if he gets any playing time? I'll admit I'm one of those that doesn't follow the minors as closely as I should.

I think he is a side-armer.

If Thornton is back... Colon is headed to the DL.

Richard is back in the rotation... and Williams is the second lefty out of the pen.

Man we need to make some moves.

I don't care if we buy or sell... I would prefer to sell...

but just don't keep what we have going on here.

Colon is supposedly going to the DL. Working on a story right now :)

Is it sad that I was happy to see this b/c it means Richard will stay in the rotation? I kind of feel bad now that I'm happy one of our own players is hurt. Though, if Dewayne Wise got injured, I wouldn't feel bad at all.

That would leave Charlotte and Birmingham without any left handed relievers at all.

I don't think this is going to be a temporary move. Williams is a guy Ozzie will have more faith in and we'll see him used as the lefty specialist.

Better than sending Richard to the pen the way he's pitching now.

Seriously, our team is not that good. I would much rather Clayton just get out his learning curves this year and go for it next year with a better team. Clayton really has impressed this year and really frustrated me, too. But it's hard to overlook the fact that not only is he a lefty, but he throws pretty hard for a lefty (91-96) and has natural sink on the ball. I really think this team is a dominant righty away from being back to a WS contender (with some other key moves next year). Blockbuster for Haren in the offseason? Haren/Buehrle/Danks/Floyd/Richard. Sign a couple key bats and this team is very solid for our division with a terrific rotation.

Getting Haren would take 2x what it would take to get Halladay. We have no chance of getting him unless we drain our farm system in the trade.

yeah, this year is a little unique though since the Sox have a lot of money coming off the books and a better farm system than they've had in awhile. I think the org will stand pat and hope Q produces and the pen turns it around because the Twins and Tigers are not very good either.

Randy Williams wasn't bad in spring training and if he's used properly he might actually turn into a nice commodity, especially when you have to go through Mauer/Morneau.

I don't think he's very good either but the Sox will use him a lot more than they did Poreda.

Williams looked pretty good in spring training.

Almost pitched his way into coming north with the team IIRC.

I don't expect much from him though and will be thrilled as long as doesn't suck in the few appearances he will end up seeing.
