I am teaching a class on The Psychology of Monsters and want to explore some characters that aren't clear cut as good or evil. Yeah, I don't think his ridiculous justifications about teaching people some kind of lesson about treasuring life by surviving mutilations are gonna be enough to push him into the middle.
