Freddy Garcia was 27 years old when the Sox acquired him. Shields was a washed up bum and 34 years old. Guess what? Castillo is nearing 34.

Yep, Castillo should be a salary dump at this point and the Sox actually gave up a decent prospect and took on a lot of money for him. This is a an absolute stinker of a trade by Getz.

Seems to me the Mariners dumped a fairly big contract and a fading pitcher on us. The Sox did not give up much. So we shall see how the rotation is set up. There is still a long way to go in this season. Fatigue and injury are always lurking. Now, if nothing else we have a little depth.

I guess this will free up Eric Lauer to go to the White Sox.

We didn't draw fans then like we are now. Also when we look at his contract didn't he only get $20M this year and he was traded before the season started ? Your memory is selectively betraying you based on always looking for the worst.

We weren't ever going to get our 1st choice. My guess would've been something where most fans initial reaction is unhappiness. Unfortunately it's much harder to reach upside in a 33-34 year old past his prime guy than it is in young players. And since the move requires immediately results the Sox don't have the luxury of patience. May need Bannister , Bove , the Pope and the Wizard to combine their skills.

Do you have data on this? Ive havent seen it. Pitchers, in general, have later peaks than position players now but much of that is tied to debut dates, and the fact that pitchers today aren't hitting the innings levels until their mid to late 20s where as position players are being brought up younger than ever. The aging curve itself appears to be starker for pitchers (avg peak periods are shorter), but pitchers who survive the curve have had more sustained success into their late thirties but these guys are the exception to the rule. I dont see this as some statistically significant difference. And Castillo has every sign of aging in an arm. Walks are up, k's are down, contact rates in and out of the zone are way up, and his former strength (righties) has gotten steadily worse 3 years in a row. This doesnt strike me as a guy avoiding the curve.

Yeah we're so not used to paying anyone that as fans we've lost track of what the rest of decent career good pitchers are getting. Back end of contracts to pay for past performance is rough though if you aren't getting the benefit of the front end.

Approximately 20% of the top 50 starting pitchers are 33 or older. Going to take a 2nd half rebound in a smaller ballpark for Castillo to fit into that category. Feels like an overpay and we figured in the sellers market that could happen. Not sure the innings he can eat are worth it at his current stat level. He has to be better. There's certainly a threading the needle , faith in our coaches vibe to this. Guess we'll see if fans are right this time on whether it's an old Sox or new Sox trade. The juice is going to be hard to be worth the squeeze but not impossible.

Savior? conversion? Very odd religious references. You think Ishbia is a savior? LMFAO. You must think Ishbia cares about anything but himself ? Oh sure, a Private Equity Investor who was born with a silver spoon in his mouth and used all of the tools of private equity to enrich himself (largely at the expense of others) is going to be the savior of this team. More on point here, Ishbia is not engaged in this trade deadline or in any decisions that impact this team. But I guess it is just fun to dream wet.

I could care less about the money and moving Siranthony is fine with me. Boston Smith was a fun story, but will I take Dominguez as a fifth starter replacing Noah for the rest of the season. We get an innings eater and bullpen protection .

I don't think Getz 'panicked,' but he obviously wanted to get this deal done tonight. Until we see the prices on the rest of the arms available out there, it's going to be a little too early to judge on what is the actual cost on this trade. IMO, Getz gave up essentially nothing in this deal, except financial flexibility for the future. Boston Smith likely isn't a catcher long term, is 23 yrs old with half his time in A+ ball this year, and does have swing and miss concerns. He's not exactly a prospect. I think Getz cashed in on selling high personally.

It was hard to figure out how Hope was going to ever play in Los Angeles—he was considered the third-best outfield prospect on his own Double-A Tulsa team, behind Josue De Paula and Mike Sirota (and Quintero as well). Ryan has shown front-of-the-rotation stuff at his best, but he’s topped 50 innings in a season only once since he was drafted in 2022, and he’ll turn 28 this month. Smith has MLB-quality stuff, but he’s a Class A pitcher who has already missed significant time with an elbow injury. They do think that he can stick in CFA (for now)...but there's a considerable difference of opinion about how true that will be down the line as he fills out. At the very least, adding Max Clark and Greene into the mix make for a very nice outfield trio.
