There are still good FA starters available but there is nothing but garbage FA outfielders remaining. I don’t see the Sox signing Bader so Hays is probably the best remaining FA outfielder available.
-
The free agents in our price range are still available.
-
They were just kindling names out there. No way they sign Bader
-
I realize that - @fathom lists the players that he thinks Sox will add; I'm listing the ones that I hope the Sox will add. I agree his list is more likely.
-
Did see this just now which is interesting.
-
That’s going to be the same pile of junk we have seen both Hahn and Getz acquire in the past several seasons.
-
Well the fact that they needed to trade Robert just to pay Murakami is pathetic in itself, but this is a Jerry Reinsdorf owned franchise we’re talking about.
-
I’m not disagreeing with you but then how does any of this make the Sox better? There really isn’t an outfielder available that is better than Robert. I guess you could argue Bader after last season but that isn’t likely to continue and I don’t see the Sox going after him. Are they adding one of the top starting pitchers remaining, like a Bassitt?
-
Clearly you havent paid much attention the arguments as to how the Murakami signing changed the dynamic on how they may have viewed trading Robert.
-
Jesus Christ. Glad I missed this one!
-
Welcome Martin Perez, Michael Conforto, and Tommy Kahnle! Hooray!
-
Trade Sosa, Benintendi and $15 million split over two years to the Pirates for Thomas Harrington and Tony Blanco, Jr. Trade Quero to Rays for Jacob Melton Sign Giolito Rotation depth: Giolito, Smith, Martin, Kay, Harrington, Burke, Thorpe, Hagen, Schultz Near future OF: Melton, Acuña, Montgomery
-
They feel they need 2-3 pieces for that same 20 million.
-
Because Getz overplayed his hand and was asking for too much initially. They've been trying to move him for 2 offseason now. Perhaps he anticipated being able to pick up some salary to increase the return package. Mune's signing certainly threw a wrench into the Sox offseason/payroll expectations. We also don't know for sure what the Mets offer was early in the offseason. With Belly finally back with the Yankees, it seems to me the Mets needed to act immediately to secure an OF. This Sox team was never going to be all that great with or without Robert. He was ultimately a sunk cost that wasn't going to be around for the next time the Sox would be good again. Hopefully Getz can use that money to add a few other pieces and they are able to develop some of these former top prospects into something useful.
-
So they should have just kept Robert then because the reallocation of this $20 million won’t be on anyone of significance.
-
Who signed already that you think would have been realistic? They also waited because they wanted someone to cave and take on the whole deal.
-
Hey now, maintaining that status quo for all these years is a pretty impressive feat.
-
Probably true, but while there are still some decent starting pitchers left, there is not much left at the other position of need for the Sox. What is left among FA outfielders? Bader, Hays, and Conforto?
-
Missed that, glad he brought more than the one receipt I did. Eddy must be allergic to criticizing Getz and with the US healthcare system he can't get an epipen so he's playing it safe! Wonder how much Getz was sweating after telling Jerry he could save him 2 million if he spent 20 million for a couple weeks. Guy probably threw a party when Tucker went to the Dodgers!
-
Cause they weren’t going to go after the higher priced guys who went already.
-
The Bulls have to be fairly close. Their goal is NBA hell.
-
Eddy has told us there is no one off the board that the Sox would have been interested in.
-
I’ll also add that I don’t necessarily have a problem with Getz having held Robert this long. Obviously I’d have to see what the offers were to be certain, but the reality is that he’s been at least a reasonable bet to have a way better season than his last every year of his career. At the end of the day, he just never bounced back. It didn’t work out but the gamble was always defensible. The issue I have is being cheap when you still had one more chance to roll the dice. $20M is a lot of money, sure, but the payroll even WITH him was set to be in the $80-something range, which is borderline malpractice to begin with. Serious question, as someone who doesn’t follow anything but baseball really: Is there a major sports franchise that’s less fun to root for?
-
Yeah, that's a normal, logical take that half the board here had. I suppose you expect Getz to go to the press and tell them that he has to trade Robert because he made a grave mistake by picking up his option, because he doesn't know how the system works. That's stupid. I'd love to continue a conversation with a person making up quotes, but I have to go be embarrassed that the Brewers protected Oliver Dunn instead of Shane Smith.

@Tony already posted the evidence on page 13 of this thread. WE literally contorted his stance on the Robert trade discussions six ways from Sunday to put Getz in the best possible light each time. If Getz ever runs for office, I know who he should hire as his campaign manager.
