  1. The trade only happened 14 hrs ago how could a take on it be getting old. My take has changed once I found out Yondo had an extra year on his deal there is zero chance Yondo today would get a contract of 2/17 million. Zero. I don't think the plan is Machado either because you'd have to think he'd prefer the 17 million to Alonso. So what is the plan? The hell if I know. I'm hoping it's to move Abreu for premium prospects and play Alonso at 1B but we could have still found someone cheaper.
  2. Yeah the metrics rate his defense bad to average. So he isn't much of a solution there. If he regains what he was in 2017 it's a good deal for us regardless of the financials but that was a career year. You would think this deal makes us more likely to move Abreu because Alonso doesn't really really appear to be DH material but who knows.
  3. Call is a non prospect. Good deal gives us an option at 1B if we move Abreu. Edit: Looking at the financials 1/9 seems a little rich hope some cash is coming back
  4. For Harper it should be around 8 years 225 which is 28 million AAV For Machado it should be 9 years 270 million which is 30 million AAV That won't be what they will get but that is what I would offer them.
  5. And where would the roster be? Do you think even by some happenstance we sign both of them we make the playoffs? I don't this team has holes everywhere and even the guys we are sort of penciling in are more penciled in because of their age and how they are viewed organizationally not by merit of what they did last year. We really only have one guy we can sort of pencil in as an above average bat for us in 2018 Abreu and even he is coming off a down year. Our rotation we had Rodon who despite his stuff still has yet to put it together as evidenced by his 4.95 FIP. We have Lopez who wore down significantly as the season moved along and ultimately maybe a bullpen guy and we have a new guy in Nova. That's three guys who performed like number 4's last year. Shields was smoke and mirrors plus is gone. Gio is a mess. So what is the plan for this 100 loss team? When I look at the WAR totals on the rest of the roster I see easily best way for us to get better is not to sign Harper or Machado it's to replace Engel, Replace Delmonico. Get a real DH. You assume you replace those three with 2.5 WAR guys basically what Sanchez was for us last year you've improved the roster by 7 WAR. That is without moving to the rotation where everyone who had 100IP or more had a - WAR.
  6. I care because that matters when you are not the Redsox or Yankees. If Machado is giving us 5 WAR at 3B but as a result of his salary we have a DH who can't hit we could very well lose more then we gain. This isn't basketball where you can just throw Lebron around a bunch of scrubs and win over 60 percent of your games. You actually have to be able to build a team and fillout a roster
  7. Nope. They are going to be way overpaid Harper has been 34th in WAR the last 3 years Machado 13th. They are good allstar type players but will be paid like they are perennial MVPs while they only have a couple of those type of seasons between them. I'm sorry but as a GM you shouldn't have to spend 40 million to accrue 5 WAR. I know GM's often do but the good ones don't.
  8. This is beyond stupid. His agent will easily be able to get a long term deal with multiple opt outs if he wants it why would he settle for a mutual option. Makes no sense and not happening. I do think Machado is the better option not just because I'll be accused of racism for suggesting otherwise. The problem is neither are good options. Machado fills more of a need but his bat has been suspect far too many seasons and he has character concerns. Harper defense is shit already at 26 plays our deepest position prospect wise and on a longterm deal the question remains can he stick in RF or even LF. Because if he can't he basically turns into a less consistent hitting JD Martinez and cuts down what his expectations should be in FA, For me I'd probably give him 8 years at 28 million considering what JD got and accounting for age. He'll get more by someone else. If we are going 10 years and have to sign one of these guys give me the guy in Machado who I know barring injury can at least play 3B for the next 6-7 years of his deal.
  9. I said 3/27 and wanted the Sox. Good signing especially if they dump wood.
  10. https://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/pitcher-spotlight-the-real-alex-wood/
  11. Alex Wood is the type of guy who fits perfectly pitching for the Dodgers in that stadium and the NL. I want him no where near us.
  12. Ah no thanks. Shouldn't have been so dismissive earlier of the work you put in. I apologize for my rude behavior.
  13. I didn't want Cain but he put up a 6.9 WAR last season. Signed for 5/80 which means according to some he was already pretty much worth his contract (ahem). If our FO is actually good at their jobs there is no reason why should need to sign Harper or Machado to win.
  14. I don't see really why we are worried about Palka. Cruz has been a 140-150 OPS+ guy. If you think he still has it you find the room and don't really worry about it
  15. Why is everyone freaking out at the slightest bit of news like little school girls. Do they not understand how FA works? Other teams are allowed to be interested in Harper services too.
  16. The only way that contract works out for the Nationals is if the US economy collapses and inflation hits 200%.
  17. It's still super early especially when it comes to Boras. If Harper signs this early you can almost guarantee it's a terrible contract and much better then the next highest offer. Like for example that Corbin deal. I wouldn't be surprised if the Nationals were 30-40 million more then the next highest offer.
  18. Nope. I have no problem with two years though his stuff was actually better then it ever was and he vastly under-performed his peripherals. 3 yrs is 1 yr too long though. He'll probably get it though
  19. Also to be clear Boras pulled that shit when talking about Eric freakin Hosmer. Not Trout or some well known MLB superstar basically because locally the KC media overrated him as a glue guy and gamer that means he was worth more nationally as well. Somehow I've missed the Hosmer WS and SB ads since joining the Padres. I'm sure they'll be coming any day now.
  20. So their prestige value only lasts as long as they are good? So maybe the focus should be just on paying for good players and letting the "prestige" come naturally.
  21. Because it's based on results new stars are formed and die out every year. Five years ago Tulo was still a household name now until he was released I forgot he was even still playing Mauer. Reyes. Pujols. Baustista were all at one time markatable names. Now?
  22. That is just Boras bullshit like last year he invented prestige value. "We know that with players from clubs, everywhere you talk, every meeting you have, they know of the skill level of the player. But when the player has prestige value, it brings tremendous value to his [Wins Above Replacement]," Boras said. "So when we talk about WAR, we put the PV to it. There are minus players that have minus PV. And there are players that have Major League standard prestige value, and players that have a well-above-average or elite prestige value. "
