Or maybe they see Canario as a AAAA outfielder who is out of options, and isn't a sure bet to hit in the bigs. Not every player the White Sox pass on is a sure fire Hall-of-Famer. It sure is fun to pretend, though.

Baseball players understand how options and all work. It's fanciful to pretend that a 26 man roster is "the best 26 men available", when in fact, there's guys you don't want to lose because they're out of options, signed a major league deal, etc. If a rookie doesn't understand that, and decided he's going to give up because somebody else got an opportunity he thought should have been his, he probably would fail after the first bad strike call on him.

*Nothing* in his profile? He OPSed .860 or above in 5 full minor league seasons. BA, MLB and BP had him as a top 40 prospect in the game. I get that he's had a rough go of it in 3 major league stints. We don't have to pretend that he never had any business walking onto a baseball field.

He was a top 40 prospect, no options, he has to play somewhere. I'd say he has about 4 months to show he can hit.

Jansen's strikeout rate dropped from "elite" to "very good" after his age 29 season. Closers get in for racking up saves. If Jansen sticks around for a couple more seasons, hits 500 saves he has a great argument for the HOF. Josh Hader is 2 seasons away from qualifying for the Hall of Fame, so if he's already stuck around "too long", then he's SOL.

I'm not sure how that translates to "hanging on too long". Same with Jansen. They're both very effective relievers who are still getting paid.

Hader's 30 years old. He had a bad 2 months in San Diego in 2022. His next 2 seasons were his normal fare.

Casey Saucke. 2024 4th rounder, has always hit. Didn't look overmatched in his 99 PAs in high-A. He was 2 years younger than the competition at that point.

His stuff is not the issue, with a mid-90s fastball up to 99, a plus curve, and an above-average slider/cutter hybrid; he’s just always hurt, throwing 252 total innings in three-plus years in the minors. The White Sox should start him if possible, because who knows how long he can go before he’s hurt again, and at least he’ll get a major-league salary while the White Sox get what could be one of their best starters.

And really, I'd rather watch a blown save by Kimbrel than an immaculate inning by Clevenger.
