  1. QUOTE (Tex @ Feb 9, 2011 -> 06:39 PM) He was working there without his proper papers (FM3). Believe it or not, Mexico required workers to fill out a couple forms and pay a small fee to work in their country. And not quite so hypothetical because it happens in our Maquila operations every once in a while where an employee working in Mexico but on the US payroll is injured and winds up in a Mexico hospital. I've never heard of a case where the person was in need of nursing home care, but at least for smaller injuries, Mexico does not kick patients out. I was just wondering how everyone would feel if the situation was in reverse. Another country shipping a criminal back so that the American taxpayer could pay the bill. If you don't like the question, feel free to not respond. Yes. In your example, he would be a tax paying US citizen and would be treated like any one else. I certainly wouldn't expect Mexico to support him for the rest of his life. This whole thing seems pretty cut and dry. At least as far as common sense goes.
  2. QUOTE (Tex @ Feb 9, 2011 -> 12:39 PM) Just wondering, using the example of an American who decided to leave the US and move to another country. He becomes injured working there and needs a lifetime of care at considerable expense would you . . . Say screw him, he left the US, it is his problem, he likes that country so much he should stay there or Since he is an American citizen he is our responsibility from cradle to grave and the US taxpayer should pay for his injuries and lifetime treatment. Too many variables to really answer your question... Better example would be a US citizen vacation in another country when the injury occurs. Would the vacationing country pay for the lifelong care of a US citizen if they wished to remain there or would they be sent home?
  3. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 9, 2011 -> 07:13 AM) Major thread jacking in progress!! What happened to the exercise thread? I want to get my workout back on...
  4. QUOTE (soxfan2504 @ Feb 9, 2011 -> 01:00 AM) After reading this article, there were two things that immediately popped into my head: First, the reason why so many illegal Mexicans come here: Jobs, nothing else. Jobs. The jobs that the political establishment in Mexico has largely given up on drawing to their country. As a result of this hopeless point of view, from those who actually run Mexico, working class Mexicans gotta go somewhere that they can find work. And that place, unfortunately, is not in their home country; it's in the more prosperous neighbor to the north. These illegals are not costing Americans jobs; it is the hopeless attitude of the Mexican government, that leaves its working class with no choice but to illegally border-hop, that is the problem. And yet we do nothing to fix it, because it helps the economy by keeping companies profitable that would not be able to do so if they paid fair wages to ACTUAL US CITIZENS. Second: Even if you leave out the issue of the quality of medical care, the question is; where the hell does this guy have a chance at something resembling a normal life? It sure as hell isn't Mexico, and certainly not in one its poorer states. Chances are very high that this guy will not recover to the point where he may even be able to drive, even with modifications such as hand controls. So that leaves him with the options of rolling around town in his power chair on the sidewalks, and taking public transportation. Well, except there's one problem........... If you think there are a good number of curb ramps (think of what you see at street corners all over the U.S.), and accessible buses with working lifts or ramps in Oaxaca, or any part of Mexico, for that matter, then I've got some oceanfront property to sell you in Kansas. I won't get into your first response. There's been plenty of threads on illegals if you want to dig em up and comment there. To your second response...and with all due respect....how in the hell is it the hospital or this country's responsibility to make sure this person has a normal life? It isn't. I would venture to guess this guy already received more money than the average tax paying American will use on medical care in a lifetime. I'm sorry about what happened to him and the answer is to go after the company that hired him, but in no way is it the taxpayers job to pay millions of dollars to advance his rehabilitation and improve his quality of life.
  5. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 8, 2011 -> 02:59 PM) I thought it was excellent, the plot isnt really why I watch it, the parts with Jason Segel living at home were priceless. And I watched the first episode of Shameless last night, Wow. aka Emmy Rossum
  6. QUOTE (Cali @ Feb 8, 2011 -> 12:50 PM) I didn't really have any desire to watch the Chicago Code, but it seemed like in the previews NO ONE HAD and accent. I'm not even from Chicago anymore, but I know 2 chicago cops, both have the thickest accents. I think they're thicker than most of the population of Chicago for some reason. Did people have accents, or should I say the correct accents? or is it like most WWII movies where the Nazi's had british accents for some reason Also, it's just FX, not F/X I thought Beals went with a pretty thick accent. I've heard her in interviews and she doesn't normally talk like that. I always think it's funny when I hear a "Chicago accent" because I don't typically notice or hear it, so I tend to forget it exists. This is my buddy from high school(kudos to him by the way)....I never thought he had an accent, but when I listen to him on here...I totally hear it. Listen to her at 10 seconds in then listen to her here. (nice speech by the way...I like her more now)
  7. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 8, 2011 -> 09:16 AM) Yeah but a whole series where gang bangers use words like "jerk" and "idiot". Come on. That's true. Can they swear in Spanish??
  8. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 8, 2011 -> 08:56 AM) Chicago Code was pretty good for a network show. It's just hard for me to get into network dramas. They seem much less realistic with the lack of swearing and toned down violence. This is definitely no Shield but I'll give it a shot for the time being. I think they tried to cover up the lack of swearing by having the main character frown upon it. I guess it's not that unrealistic...there are people that don't like cursing for one reason or another....f***in idiots if you ask me though.
  9. Don't steal this guy's shovel. Steal Snow Shovel — Get Snow Blower Revenge Posted by Amy Sue Andrews on February 7th, 2011 (a.) Lady steals man's snow shovel. (b.) Man buries her car with snowblower. Chicago resident David Welles is the wrong guy to steal a snow shovel from. With a blizzard full of snow in his front yard, it seemed like a good time to get out the old snow shovel and build an igloo for his two year-old little girl, Mayson. After playing in the snow a while and getting the igloo half-built, he left the shovel on his front porch, ready to finish the igloo project the next day. When he and Mayson went to get it the next day, the shovel was gone. During the third biggest blizzard in Chicago history, someone had stolen Welles’ snow shovel. Discovering the identity of the thief wasn’t too hard for Welles, he owns Tunnel Vision Technology, a security company. Naturally, he had security cameras watching his yard, so he played back the previous night’s activities and found the thief. It was a neighbor woman out walking her dog. She let the dog poop in Welles’ yard, then, rather than pick it up, she opened the front gate and went up to the porch and stole Welles’ shovel. She dug her car out, and then decided to keep the shovel. He did not know her, but he is a nice guy and said he would have gladly loaned her the shovel. So instead he got out his new snow blower and buried her car in so much snow it took her four hours to get it out. “I got a little, I guess, passive-aggressive,” Welles said. “I got a new snowblower, so I was kind of excited to bury her car.” “It felt good, I’m not going to lie to you,” Welles said. Welles’ security cameras got the whole thing, which is posted here:
  10. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Feb 7, 2011 -> 01:53 PM) So my news feed on facebook has kind of been blowing up about The Chicago Code. Might be because of the Polish detective who happens to be White Sox fan, as are most of my friends on facebook, def excited to watch it. That sox fan, polish detective, is from Australia. He did a good job getting rid of his accent. Thought the show was decent last night. Except the cop driving next to the thug while having a gun pointed in his face. I mean come on...that didn't contribute anything to the scene, so why add some totally unrealistic s***, when there isn't a need.
  11. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 7, 2011 -> 01:14 PM) Seems like they did quite a lot for him. Certainly on a personal level I feel badly for his situation, but I also think this was the best way to handle it. They spent gobs of money and time to get him stable, and then sent him home. I think the advocate's statement that he was treated like garbage is absurd. He's here illegally, he broke the law and gambled, and he lost. That loss should not be extended to the rest of the country. He is owed nothing, but received a lot. My thoughts exactly.
  12. Thoughts? Full Article Hospital's decision to send quadriplegic man back to Mexico angers those in Chicago who cared for him For almost four months, doctors and nurses at Advocate Christ Medical Center cared for the young Mexican laborer who had fallen from a roof and lost the ability to speak, breathe or move most parts of his body. But Quelino Ojeda Jimenez was in the U.S. illegally, and just before Christmas he was taken from the Oak Lawn hospital, loaded on an air ambulance and flown to Oaxaca, capital of the Mexican state where he was born. "They threw him out like he was a piece of garbage," said Horacio Esparza, a disability rights advocate who runs the Progress Center for Independent Living in Forest Park. Advocate Christ spent about $650,000 on Ojeda's medical care and another $60,000 to transport him to Mexico after several private long-term care facilities refused to take the young man as a patient, Golson said. "We saved his life and brought him to a stable condition," but when it became clear that Ojeda needed a lifetime of care, it seemed best to return him close to family, she said.
  13. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Feb 3, 2011 -> 11:32 AM) The ACORN Pimp/Ho road show is back, and the new target is Planned Parenthood. Turns out "Live Action" went to 13 different Planned Parenthood centers across the Northeast with cameras posing as a pimp trafficking underage prostitutes and wanted information on abortion. They released a video where the counselor made some improper and unethical counsel to these people. The Planned Parenthood employee? Fired upon discovery of the remarks. The FBI, by the way, was also notified of these unusual visits, because Planned Parenthood generally errs on the side of caution when it comes to human trafficking. I think we can all agree, that no medical professional should act illegally when counselling patients about reproductive health, or any personal health issues for that matter. But because of this "sting" operation, designed to get an organization in trouble unnecessarily, the FBI is now spending extra resources investigating a potential child trafficking organization that doesn't really exist and that's kind of horrifying. http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20110202/us_nm/us_abortion_video For the record, fully two thirds of Planned Parenthood services entail STD Screening and STD/Pregnancy Prevention and Education. Another 17% of it is cancer screening. Abortion related services entail just 3% of what this organization does. Here's the video. Weird it wasn't in the article somewhere.
  14. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Feb 3, 2011 -> 09:45 AM) I don't know what/if they could have done better or differently, but Metra is really getting their ass kicked by the storm. From all the delays/changes/cancellations, to the s***ty job they did informing people, they are not having a good week. My train home Tues had switch problems after a the first few stops. The conductors went outside to try and manually pop the switch. I guess the one conductor couldn't unlock the box and the other went out to help and his key broke off in the lock. We had to back way the hell up, to where we could switch tracks. Train was about 90 minutes late. I was pissed, but when I got home and saw some of other s*** that went down....it made it a little better. Biggest thing is communication. The conductors never announced one thing to us on the train. Just the automated message about the train being XX minutes behind schedule. I found out what really happened this morning. I think people would have been more understanding, if they just explained what the hell happened.
  15. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Feb 3, 2011 -> 08:53 AM) haha. i actually think that was pretty good. I've never found the man funny and can't remember the last time I laughed at a top ten someone sent me.
  16. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 2, 2011 -> 11:10 AM) Someone tell Dave, him laughing doesn't make it funny.
  17. QUOTE (Brian @ Feb 2, 2011 -> 04:58 PM) There is something about cleaning off your driveway after a deep snow fall, standing back, and admiring your work. oh yeah. Not sure why either. I'm sure the guy that barely shovels and does just enough to get his car out, looks at people like me and says...loser!
  18. CPS just announced schools closed again tomorrow.
  19. Cleanest driveway on the block!
  20. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Feb 1, 2011 -> 09:47 AM) If you click the "replies" number for any thread, it'll tell you the number of times each person has posted in the thread. no mod powers needed. Works the same for most forum software. Thx. Never knew that.
  21. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 1, 2011 -> 08:45 AM) I think that's a bit of an exaggeration, I can't even think of 10-15 liberal posters who post with any regularity in the Buster. I can think of Balta, BigSqwert, StrangeSox, bmags and to lesser extents Rex, AHB, Soxbadger and jasonxcteruhueig. I can't even think of any other regular liberal posters, let alone ones in here. GOP regulars would be you, SS, kap, and to lesser extents CC, Y2HH, cknolls and mr genius. I'd consider lf, iamshack and myself moderates. Who am I missing that you consider regular posters? Do that little thing SS2k5 just did where it tracks who posts where? Probably see more names pop up that we're forgetting. I would love to see that as well, just to see all the people that have given up posting anymore.
  22. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 30, 2011 -> 12:20 PM) New Rule: Americans Must Realize What Makes NFL Football So Great: Socialism In case you're interested in another view Tackling Bill Maher’s “NFL Is Socialist” Rant
  23. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 30, 2011 -> 03:58 PM) Ok? You're right, there are a lot more counter-points posted in this thread. What do you propose happens, though? No refutations allowed? I do, but that's just me. If there's a topic you want to debate...start a thread and debate. But leave Repub thread for Repubs and a Dem thread for Dems. I believe that was the original intent and it got all jacked up during the pres election. Everybody would be a lot happier...except of course for the people who just can't read a thought without hitting reply. May of 2008 and really you can go back to when the threads were first created. http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?s=...t&p=1640151 http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?s=...t&p=1642378
  24. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 27, 2011 -> 06:52 PM) Dammit. He'd look great on the Oakland sidelines. He'd look better on the Bear sidelines.
  25. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 25, 2011 -> 08:02 AM) You realize that by this point in 2007, everyone other than Fred Thompson had basically declared that they were running in the Presidential primaries? This year, no one has actively announced they're a candidate yet. Anyway, Tim Pawlenty is going to save the world. touché
