  2. QUOTE(bulokis @ Jan 25, 2005 -> 11:53 PM) Mientkievicz to mets done. Doug Mientkiewicz - 1B - BOS According to the Associated Press, the Red Sox will receive an A ball prospect and cash from the Mets for Doug Mientkiewicz in a deal that could be announced on Wednesday. Boston would receive cash? That's probably subject to change. Jan. 26 - 12:12 am et Source: The Associated Press I had to read it twice before I got to rotoworlds comments -- I was thinking the same thing.. The cash is going the wrong way in that deal
  3. QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Jan 25, 2005 -> 10:52 PM) I won't comment on you, but democratic republic refers to the fact that representatives of the republic are elected via a democratic process. But silly me for understanding the context of the words & not just their grammar. Democratic Republics are clearly superior to Socialistic ones. DR, 31, 27, 29, 14, 21, 64, +132 SR, 18, 22, 23, 18, 17, 34, +37 It's clear.

But you did help jog my memory enough to help me find what I was talking about. I read far too much to keep it all straight. I remembered in the follow-up discussion Lee Sinnis had a quote something along the lines "there's little correlation between strikeouts and winning, there's a strong correlation between striking out and fans booing", The Jose Valentin postulate™ So anyway -- Here's the study(http://www.netshrine.com/20040806.html), and accompanying data(http://www.netshrine.com/OverallTeamContactRating.xls) which wasn't about K's by pitchers at all, but rather a combination of a team's pitchers ability to record K's in conjunction with the same team's ability to avoid K's at the plate to come up with a "contact ratio" -- Be sure to read the Discussion thread (http://www.netshrine.com/vbulletin2/showth...ght=fans+booing) as part of the theory is debunked. This discussion is much more informative than Verducci's "OMG Why didn't the Yankees win the World series this year" pile Sometimes we have selective memories, I remember that I saved the spreadsheet and ran some other stuff off of it, specifically using it as a predictor of 2004 playoff qualfiers.
  6. I read a study, (I've lost the data now because I wiped my HD) that was basically about this same thing(with much less mainstream media Yankee fellating) -- I'll see if I can find it... Basically the gist of it was that teams whose pitchers get more strikeouts do better than teams that don't (I know it's revolutionary) -- From what I can remember, I would say about 90% of all playoff teams from the past 25 years recorded about 1000 strikeouts. That's a pretty healthy correlation.

  8. QUOTE(JoshPR @ Jan 25, 2005 -> 01:44 PM) Konerko Shingo Crede Contreras Iguchi (If opt is not Picked up) Hermanson Marte (Not SURE) Frank AJ woah -- that's a lot of misinfo Shingo = FA in 06 Konerko = FA in 06 everyone else we have some sort of option on. Frank - dual option Igu - under contract (assuming he officially signs) Crede - under 6 years of service Contreras - under contract Marte under contract Hermanson - Under contract AJ - Under 6 years of service
  9. QUOTE(knightni @ Jan 25, 2005 -> 12:15 PM) If he dropped about 30 pounds, it would really help his pitching stamina and injury recovery time. He could pick up some points in the swimsuit competition too.
  10. QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Jan 25, 2005 -> 11:30 AM) Yes. Small ball means giving up less runs & scoring less runs but preventing droughts of runs. It's all about manufacturing runs with base hits, moving runners over, hit & runs, stolen bases, hit by pitch, sacrifice hits, & walks. Oddly enough in the revamping of the Sox to small ball, the Sox are only giving up 21r, 18rbi from the 04 team. They still have an 8 cylinder engine but have added some nitrous oxide for the quick burst Quoting the Sun-Times, the Sox are probably the fastest team in the majors now. With power nearly equal to that of last year's team. R and RBI are products of what your teammates do around you. I don't think it's at all an accurate way to describe how this team compares to last. The 2002 and 2003 were largely the same team offensively. One scored 65 more runs than the other(probably not the team you're thinking). I can guarantee you that if you use the 2001 team's R+RBI to try and predict the the 2002 teams Runs Scored, and the 2002 team's R+RBI to predict the 2003 teams RBI you will be surprised by how wildly inaccurate your predictions are.
  11. QUOTE(gotoh00 @ Jan 25, 2005 -> 11:04 AM) The reason Iguchi had to settle for less was because it is really difficult to tell how Japanese hitters will fair over here. Case in point, So Taguchi. But, the level of pitching is very high in Japan, so I'd say about 35 % of the pitchers there could get on any MLB 40-man roster easy. The reason we don't see more of an influx is that the Japanese league is doing everything it can to stop it. Players don't get free-agency until after 7 full seasons on a team so, with injuries, that equates to about 10 years they have to play over in Japan first. This means that many players are past their primes before they even have the chance to come to the majors. Also, many fans brand those players who do come here as "traitors" for abandoning their old teams and loyal fans. So, more often than not, Japanese players decide to remain in Japan out of fear of hurting everyone they know. So Taguchi was never destined for greatness in Japan or America -- He posted a career line of .277/.333/.387 in Japan...(a .700 OPS isn't exactly what I'm looking for in a corner outfielder) -- That being said, I suppose you could use him as a example of how the Japanese game translates to the American one.... In his final two season in Japan, ST posted lines of .279/.353/.389 .280/.343/.406 -- Remarkably simillar to his career line in the states of .290/.339/.440 -- Only about 250 ABs
  12. I love the quote about being the fastest team in the majors... It's wrong on so many levels. '27 Yankees -- I hear they were a bunch of speedsters. :rolly Replacing the fastest returning player with a player who's not slow, but one who I doubt is any faster than Willie makes us faster than say the D-Rays with Baldelli, Crawford, Gathright, Lugo, and Cruz??? How does that work?
  13. a game in the 60's -- neither team wins by more than 5 -- as for who that winner is, I have no clue.
  14. QUOTE(BlackBetsy @ Jan 25, 2005 -> 09:41 AM) I think Reynoso is the clear choice. I mean, I've never even heard of the guy until this thread. Matt Smith is a marginal prospect, and could be claimed. He put up solid numbers last year. Sean Tracey is the second best pitching prospect (assuming Honel is hurt) in the Sox system. Those kind of strikeout rates indicate a good pitcher, and pitchers generally gain control over time. Sean Tracey strikes me as a guy with a higher ceiling than McCarthy even, but with a lower probability of success. Lopez may make it through waivers (position players are more likely to make it), but Reynoso seems to be the clear choice. I had thought the same thing after the AJ signing, but the White Sox apparently feel diferently... Reynoso is a converted infielder. So he came to the pitching game late. But a raw lefty with a heater at 95 isn't something that slips through waivers that often.

  16. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jan 25, 2005 -> 03:24 AM) Bryant Nelson had a season in Japan before he came back to play for Charlotte last season. I'd be interested to see the stats while he was playing over there. .228/.256/.323 -- but I would say the same thing about a player headed over there... You hear DJ talk about the "Shooto" all the time, and over here the japanese playeres have to adjust to the difference between the speeds, and the 2 seam fastball. Edit: He played on Iguchi's team.
  17. I like your thinking Wite... There are only a handful of teams that would bother claiming Grilli, and I don't know who has room. This is exactly the time of year where he would slip through without any problem.

  23. QUOTE(GreatScott82 @ Jan 24, 2005 -> 08:21 PM) How about KW trades Willie Harris & a pitching prospect to Kansas City for Tony Graffinino & Scott Sullivan? I don't think the Cubs would do that deal
