  1. better yet the last time the White Sox had a player-manager they won the WS..... of course it WAS 1906, and they did only have to play the Cubs, so.... I nominate Ozzie to fill the theoretical hole vacated by JosE6.
  2. Yeah I think the only way the big ten getss 5 in this year is going to be if a team who is clearly not in the tourney runs the table in the Big Ten tournament
  3. I've been changing my avatar daily for about a week, so tmorrow its ALL yours, but for the rest of tonight you've got to share.
  4. Wisconsin is the real deal... MSU I don't think has bought into the coach Izzo school of basketball... Maybe they wont until next year... Usually his teams, even when they give up size, dominate the glass, but htis year has been a struggle... I knew the early season would be rough, but down by that score to Minnesota??? I would have thought they would have gained from the better non-conference competition.
  5. beat you to it....I'll change to another mugshot tomorrow though
  6. I know I'm not going to change you mind on the subject, but here's a somewhat simillar scenario. I know your a giants fan too, but stick with me... Jerry Angelo didn't want Dick juaron to be his coach. That's plain as day fact. But after his key aquisitions(Wahington and Traylor) and first season DJ was 13-3 and coach of the year in the NFL. DJ's contract was due to be extended, and JA was forced into having a coach he didn't want. So how is this simillar to the Backman situation you ask. Well JA set out to sabotage the Bears. Backman did nowhere near that, only making a comment, as opposed to a systematic destruction for ones own personal gain. Dont think JA could pull it off? here's proof: Cut starting takle Blake Brockermyer Replace with rookie first round draft pick Marc Columbo -- who was considered a stretch pick in the first round Forgets to check a box requiring teams to provide compensation for Warrick Holdman if they sign him to an offer sheet. Subsequently the Bears have to pay through the nose in order to match Kanasas City's offer leading to the departure of double digit sackman Rosevelt Colvin Forgets to check a box requiring teams to provide compensation for Dwayne Bates . Dwayne Bates is signed to an offer sheet by Minnesota which our "hero" Jerry matched because he "knew" that Dwayne would renegotiate to a smaller salary. When Dwayne refused to take a pay cut Angelo released him, but Dwayne got to keep the signing bonus. Bates signed with Minnesota and enjoyed a comparable, but slightly more productive year than Dez White. Drafts CB Roosevelt Williams in 3rd round. What might have been? CB Derek Ross who had 5 interceptions 2002. Williams was cut the following year Releases (starting Tacke)Big Cat Williams in favor of Aaron Gibson or Bernad Robertson (subsequently cut). Declines to resign double digit sackman Rosevelt Colvin -- declaring Bryan Knight his replacement. Bryan Knight was demoted by game four of 2003 and ended the year with no sacks. Trades Ted Washington away in favor of Alfonso Boone -- hurting team chemistry, morale, and diminishes Urlachers effectiveness. All we got in return was a 4th round pick, for a superbowl teams starting NG? The Bears 2002 draft was arguably the worst in football. The only productive player from the draft is Alex Brown, a fourth rounder, who had first-round talent, but fell because he had an extremely sketchy background. So now that Angelo's actions have been documented, What, if anything, did he do to deserve a 4 year contract extension, while Jauron was shown the door? How much bigger of a "douche bag" is Angelo than Backman? Why should he still have a high ranking job, while backman is essentially fired and demoted? -------- Note: I may hate Jerry Angelo's past moves, but I think he does have a good football mind, as evidenced by last years draft. I just think he did an underhanded thing to get his own guy into position. All of the moves he has made this off season I have been impressed by.
  7. Wally Backman is hardly a "pile of s***". He's a manager who over the past two seasons got more out of his team than most anyone in baseball. He may have been a little over anxious to get himself to Chicago, but he didn't do anything underhanded to get there. He REPORTEDLY told Gardenhire to go out an whip the Sox so that he could have the managerial job. While that's far from an honorable thing to do, when you're cashing checks from the organization, he didn't do anything to physically harm anyone on the team or hinder thier development in any way. And I'm sure you never wished to get a promotion at your job, especially if you had a lame duck candidate ahead of you. I'm sure Cotts, Bullard, and Jeff B. would come on here and defend him as a great manager. One who if he was the skipper of the big league club last year, we would have had a division championship at the very least.
  8. it probably should have, even though it was much more of an obvious joke than yours. But he just arrived here, and doesn't have 300 post like you.. we'll forgive him. on the other hand... Now that one's either a really bad joke, or really in nead of some green. I can't tell if you are really excited that the media is homophobic, or just mocking the previous posters' use of the term.
  9. I thought since there is sufficient interest in the other mock draft. we could do a different style that would only use polls. It would work like this. Day one. First pick. We put the top 9 possibilites in a poll along with a "other" category, allowing for write-ins. The pick is the top vote getter and removed from the available players. At this time you can make nominations for the next round. Players that the next team is probably going to choose from. Day two. Second pick. We put the remaining top 9 possibilities along with a "other category, allowing for write-ins. The pick is the top vote getter and removed from the available players. At this time you can make nominations for the next round. Players that the next team is probably going to choose from. Day three. Pick three etc..... We would go one poll per 24 hour period, during the week with only one poll for Saturday and Sunday. It would take until March to complete the first round this way, but everyone gets a say on each pick. You could even sabotage a pick, or help make your teams prized player fall to thier pick. Anyone interested just reply to the thread. Also give any recommendations you can. If there's enough interest I think we should start on monday. It doesn't make sense to start this week with Soxfest and the superbowl going on. San Diego is one the Clock..... Manning, Roethlisberger, Gallery, Fitgerald... should I bother to include others?
  10. Thanks --- I'll miss it at 8, but I should be able to catch a rebroadcast.
  11. Yes, even when a real team drafts, it's hard to determine a "winner"... Some have more productive drafts than others.... The real purpose of a mock draft is to get a different perspective on the Draft. It puts you in the position of GM/owner and you watch as you guys either are snatched up, or fall into your lap.... ... There's a fun chapter in "Moneyball" about one of BB's drafts. I know alot of people on here have read or are currently reading that book. That is one of the best parts.
  12. I'm so glad you said that... I was holding myself back, went to lunch, and when I got back, refused to read the thread. Your reply was much more eloquent than anything I would have written at the time.
  13. Congrats Wally... I wish you well wherever your travels take you.
  14. if your so full of money, why don't you go buy yourself an decent avatar, i'm tired of staring at that damn red x in a little white box.... I'm poor but I've got an avatar that changes daily, which reminds me....
  15. I just realized I didn't pick... Patriots 16 Panthers 13 (ot) For all of you Pres. Bush lovers out there, you might think having the Patriots win would be a good boost to patriotism, and thus presidencial support, but the Super Bowl as an economic indicator has been right 29 out of 36 times, and a Patriot victory would mean a down year for the market, and would be bad for Bush come November. Snopes.com for further support
  16. The first time I was in florida as a kid my dad had rangled us a way onto the base for a launch, but it didn't happen until after we were on our flight back to Chicago. Damn late afternoon florida thunderstorms.
  17. I watched a nighttime lauch from a rooftop in Orlando not too long ago... COOLEST.THING.EVAR
  18. Clear Channel sells out O'Hare in traffic reports Basically, now you'll hear 45 minutes from allstate Arena to downtown, in stead of 45 minutes O'hare to downtown, because Allstate PAID to have it that way for the next year.
  19. I always remember the Challenger disaster, every year. But that's because it was 2 days after the Bears SuperBowl victory.
  20. I was at the 2000 NCAA championship game, in one of the skyboxes. The box was completely catered. We had a full buffet. Rick Maherus, who I don't think was on the guest list, physically pulled up a chair to the buffet. I don't think anyone cared, because of who he is. And he was really fun to watch the game with. He was a big fan of Mich St., and was pointing out in advance the plays they were going to run.
  21. it's a "secret society" / club... at Yale university. The University and the members almost uniformly deny it's existence...
  22. I believe Bush was the one who tapped Coffin for membership, IIRC, or vise versa. I haven't really read much on the subject in a few years... I just wanted to put this stuff out there... I actually haven't read all of the links...
  23. I don't think this comes as much of a surprise. The guy lives in a hotel, and plans his road trips around eating establishments.
