QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jan 17, 2008 -> 05:37 PM) Yeah, I understand that average can be skewed by outliers in either direction. I just asked the question to make sure that I was, in fact, correct and so -- if I ever needed to -- I could take a look at how many people were left and figure out the average myself. Average won't be skewed by outliers in a closed system. If no new chips are coming in and none are leaving the system, average is a just a function of the number of people still alive. That's why you'd want to know (get the feel of) median vs. mean (the average). What you really want to know the range, or standard deviation from mean/median. But since you're not going to be able to easily calculate any of those (aside from average) you just have to go by feel.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jan 17, 2008 -> 05:08 PM) Okay -- I got a question here for any poker players or people intelligent enough to work with numbers. I'm pretty sure I'm correct but just want to be sure: Say I'm playing in a card tourney that has 200 people and each person starts off with 1500 chips. When there's 100 people left, the average chip stack will ALWAYS be 3000, yes? And when there's 50 people left, the average chip stack will be 6000 (and so on and so forth). I'm doing this correctly, yes? Assuming there's no rake, the averages you listed are correct... If you know (guess/get the feel of) the median vs. average (mean) of the room, you're in good shape.

QUOTE(BobDylan @ Jan 16, 2008 -> 05:14 AM) While not for everyday use or even for the occasional difficult task, I think Asus got the UMPC right with the EEE. For $400, you can't really go wrong with that machine. Yes, the HD space is absolutely tiny and it's not entirely upgradeable outside of an SD card, but for surfing the web, checking e-mail and actually fitting the bill of what a UMPC should be, the EEE is top notch. That's the route I'm gonna go this summer I think... I'm gonna build myself a middle-of-the-road laptop running some open source software (Ubuntu, gOS, something) I'd get an Asus, but I want something a little bigger than the 7 inch screen or whatever it's rockin. Actually its the size of the keyboard that has me taking a step away from the EEE. I've got big hands, and have trouble typing on laptop as it is. Anything smaller than the standard 12" laptop keyboard would probably render the thing useless in my hands. Asus got it right, but they still need a couple more iterations (maybe a year or two) before the price of solid state memory makes it viable to have more than just a nominal amount of data on your computer. Though I'm reasonably sure the future of computing will feature server based data storage.

QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Jan 15, 2008 -> 04:00 PM) Why does this game keep getting delayed? I swear Nintendo had it pegged for Christmas release in their E3 presentation, along with MarioKart Wii. I wish Wii would come out with an updated version of duckhunt, its been a long time since the hound laughed at me. The crossbow training which comes packaged with the zapper is the 2008 equivalent... I played it for longer than I'd like to admit on NYE.

On Martinez, BA/Rogers said that he has a plus arm in RF, and currently has the speed to play CF (Though that ability figures to wane as he fills out his ample frame)... I point this out because this is what I heard this summer, and was the main (only significant) difference between the scouting reports I've heard over the season and those given by Bureau. Of course, Rogers lists "raw package of tools" as Martinez' main weakness, which I agree would be a weakness were he at AA/AAA, but he's in Rk ball. Good prospects are supposed to be lanky, raw, and toolsy at that level.

So who wins Michigan, TO or Romo? -
Exactly... Shaffer was castrated at this time last year. The Sox held organizational meetings in AZ in advance of ST, during which Kenny blasted the amateur scouting staff and announced Laumann and Wilder as supposedly getting (increased) control of the draft.

Everyone who donates more than $5 to Obama gets a lunch with him. Write it off as a business lunch. -
QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Jan 9, 2008 -> 12:40 AM) So what does this really MEAN political gurus out there? I personally think Obama supporters mailed it in because of the predictions. I don't think anyone mailed it in. I just think we're once again seeing the weakness in pre-election polling and exit polling. If the predicted large victory for Obama helped anyone, it might have been McCain. Some independents could have thought their vote wasn't needed in Obama's camp, and thought they could make a difference in McCain's favor. Though I acknowledge that percentage is probably extremely small.

20% in now... Hills has it. The Cheat is calling it, 2000-style... I'm going to bed.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 8, 2008 -> 08:11 PM) LOL, the more rural areas close an hour earlier than the more urban ones, so there's a guaranteed bias in reporting times. Rex just addressed this, but Manchester as urban as NH gets (33% reporting) has Hill blowing the doors off Obama, by 15 points. The 1000 vote difference as of this second can be traced entirely to Manchester.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 7, 2008 -> 11:55 PM) I'll put my two cents in here on the fact that Hillary got emotional. That moment is most human side of Hillary that I've seen from her. She has always, imo, comes across as 'the iron lady' and this kind of shows a chink in her armor. In fact, I think this incident will help her rather than hurt her. My thought was that it was a calculated and direct response to 'the iron lady' syndrome of which you speak. -

The most entertaining thing about the Fiesta Bowl so far are the continual reaction shots of the male member of the West Virginia Flags(?) sqaud in a full leotard. FLAMING! -
QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Dec 29, 2007 -> 11:33 PM) Heads, I saw that post of yours trying to diminish what Brady's done. There's a huge difference between the team Manning had and the team Brady has. New England is simply designed to throw, even short. That, more than some desperation for the record, is the difference in pass attempts. New England is a better franchise. Bill Belichick is almost undeniably a greater coach. Tom Brady is his generation's Montana; Manning is Marino. I know who I prefer. Until someone writes a book about the genius of the Colts.
