QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 10:30 PM) Gwynn Jr. wouldn't even be in the majors if not for who his father is. But he's fast!

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 10:07 PM) Hall isn't going for Crede. Hall costs Crede plus Gio or DLS

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:02 PM) Sorry, I had a few classes today, wasn't around this afternoon. That wasn't bait at all. You have said a few times Williams has already screwed up, and mismanaged. What should he have done this off-season? What would have been the right moves? No don't mention that you had classes. This opens up the "you have a lot to learn" door.

Miscellaneous "MLB" Trade Notes

QUOTE(G&T @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 07:45 AM) I'm sure the Rays asked for a Cabrera type package and that ended the talks. Or maybe it was the trades of Dukes and Young which left them with only Upton, Crawford, and Baldelli in the OF... with Ruggiano being called upon when Baldelli inevitably gets hurt. They're rumored to be taking Barton #1 in the Rule 5 draft later this week... They can't really afford to trade any more outfielders right now. -

QUOTE(klaus kinski @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 03:37 PM) Didnt he either quit or not go to Winter Ball when they wanted him to? Driving to Kentucky in the 5th inning of a ballgame usually doesn't sit well with a club. -

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 12:32 AM) Tim Brown, Yahoo Sports: Haren would certainly be better (if healthy) than Miller in '08... And the Tigers are in a position, improving an already good team with the Reteria trade, to truly compete for a championship. It would be a good move. -
QUOTE(RudyLawRules @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 12:18 AM) Hmmm...interesting how the Phillips blurb is gone now. I took a screen shot. I believed you. BUT I also believe that 'lil Stevie was playing with Buster's computer. Buster punched him in the shoulder and told him to go get him a rum and coke from the Opryland's hotel bar.

QUOTE(ChWRoCk2 @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 11:57 PM) This is all there is on Burke, doesn't really say that there were talks from what I took from this piece.... OK, I thought it was just me... Steve Phillips was probably having fun with some fake blog post -- he likes to play fake GM, remember. Fake press conference at 10PM! -- and had to remove it when Buster Olney caught him using the "real" computers.

QUOTE(BearSox @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 11:55 PM) PTBNL... has to be named six months after the trade is announced. LaPorta can't be traded until a year after he signed his pro contract, which was at least a couple of weeks after the draft, which was June 6th or 7th?... Do the math. Nothing with LaPorta can happen between now and say January. And there is zero chance the Brewers intend to part with him for 1-year of a balky-backed defensive specialist after shocking the baseball world with the pick in the first place. -
That was a fun game.

The Cheat would like some wheels for a fixie he's building... 126MM flip/flop hub will do.

Sox Acquire Carlos Quentin for Chris Carter; DFA Heath Phillips

QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 11:22 PM) You just have to shake your head at some things. I know they could have used Phillips before they acquired Quentin... -
We should add this guy

QUOTE(ChWRoCk2 @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 05:28 PM) Hopefully Carlos is healthy, hes definitely talented and gets on base and hitting in the cell might even boost his stats, sure will be nice for him to get out a divison with some of the best pitchers in the league in Webb, Peavy and etc... Yeah, Webb was really killing him... And there's nothing like facing Santana, Liriano, Verlander, Sabathia, Carmona, and soon some Millers to really help your BA. -

QUOTE(Jeremy @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 05:02 PM) I think Josh Byrnes is a phenomenal GM but paying Byrnes $30 million over three seasons and jettisoning Quentin makes little sense to me. Fan pressure (Byrnes is the defacto face of the D'backs) heavily influenced the D'backs owner to mandate the GM Byrnes to sign the OF Byrnes -

QUOTE(daa84 @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 04:01 PM) i trade konerko for weaver yesterday....the fact that sakamoto (who really should just stick to high school sports) mentioned him in a trade is laughable not sure why the hate for owings...no he doesn't throw 95 or even 92 for that matter, but for a guy who just turned 25, has a minor league record of 17-3 with a 3.14 ERA with a solid 167 K: 56 BB in 189 innings....and went 8-8 with a 4.30 (yes in the NL West though)......yeah hes 2.5 years older than danks, but im not convinced that hes that much less of a commodity right now than danks At this point, he's probably more of a commodity than Danks, but I'd sooner bet on Danks being a succesful pitcher for the White Sox... And I've expressed deep concerns about Danks' future as a big leaguer. And in that right, if KW was smart enough to flip him right away, it would be a good acquisition. But counting on him to produce well in the AL Central isn't a smart decision. -

QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 03:52 PM) Micah Owings in the AL is nothing more than a #5 starter, at best. He would have fit in with the old way of thinking with his blazing 89 mph fastball. Maybe we can make him a platoon partner with Richar? Totally agree on Owings... Thankfully, a team rumored to be shopping Quentin and Carlos Gonzalez for "young pitching" isn't going to move a young pitcher coming off a successful rookie campaign... (Though I'd be bearish on his ability to exceed that rookie season anytime soon) -

QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Dec 2, 2007 -> 08:00 PM) Does anyone other than me hate the fact that Fox has the BCS bowl games? They do ZERO college football all year and then jump right into the BCS with their NFL talent covering. I hate it! This whole BCS Selection Show is stupid as well. I'm sorry, but college football and the bowls are NOT the NCAA Tournament. And that is okay. Yeah... The only thing worse than those announcers trying to tell me about a team (in a sport they haven't covered all year) is this damn show. I turned it off. I'll find out later. Without the commercials or blue balls. -
Grossman wasn't good in the second half, but he was about the 8th or 9th worst thing the Bears had going out there... the least of their problems... Overall he had a pretty good game... The O-Line is terrible, and you can't shoot yourself in the foot with false starts... The D-Line was giving away 5 yard gifts all game. The only thing that makes our O-line blocking look good is the blocking of our WR -- At least they catch everything thrown their way (Oops) The offensive gameplan went into prevent once the game entered the 2nd quarter. I don't know why they even count on running the ball with the O-line/running back combo we've got. It was going to take a little creativity to run the table, which is what the Bears needed. Outside of the first quarter/drive, we didn't really see anything that wasn't pulled from a decades old playbook.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Dec 2, 2007 -> 06:58 PM) This has been a miserable football game aside from that first drive. The Bears should have buried this team, but Turner's awful play-calling has the Giants down by two points (after this challenge). If they lose this game Turner should be thrown into Lake Michigan. Rex was at his best on two drives. Both times they threw the ball a ton, on almost every first down, and ran a hurry up offense... He's got, what, one completion in the second half. The offense has had one 3rd down of less than 9 yards in the entire second half. And all the first down rushes, specifically from 1-or-2 WR sets aren't doing anything but producing 2nd and 3rd and long, which is when the Giants can play to the strength of their D-Line

QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 2, 2007 -> 06:43 PM) Run the ball more....get that clock running. The wind is incredibly strong at the stadium right now. They've run it 20 times for 61 yards... Running isn't the answer as long as the question involves the Bears offense
-
who kidnapped Turner... That was a brilliant first drive I don't care what the conditions are like, if the Bears want to win this game (and their next 5) they're going to have to rely on the arm of Grossman. Peterson isn't going win it for you... Throw early. Throw often. Run 4 and 5 wide sets, use Hester, Olsen... Find Haas as the 5th guy. Throw 50 times a game. Throw to open up the running game....

QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Dec 2, 2007 -> 03:17 AM) Still dreaming of Roses though, cmon Rose Bowl committee preserve the tradition It's virtually assured.... Their other choices are ASU (they don't want a Pac 10 conference game), Hawaii (No chance), Kansas (Hawaii of the midwest), WVU (coming off a loss to Wanny). The only danger is if UGa is in the championship. OSU will be one, giving Rose the first replacement pick... and the most lucrative matchup would be LSU-USC, which might be better than the championship game) -
