  1. QUOTE(JimH @ Apr 7, 2006 -> 04:51 PM) Keith, He wanted to save Cotts in case he needed him in the 9th or a tie game. Logan is the lefty specialist, that's why he used him against Hafner in the 8th. You are correct that both pitched two innings. Guillen used Logan in the role they have him in, he made a bad pitch. As for Thornton, I'm sure he'll get some innings this weekend. Jim, Can you name one player in the major league draft era who was put into a "hold situation" with just 7 innings pitched above Rookie ball?
  2. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Apr 7, 2006 -> 03:50 PM) Uhh, Boone Logan pitched two innings the prior day as well, and actually threw more pitches than Cotts... Second Guesser! Heretic!
  3. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Apr 6, 2006 -> 10:29 PM) Honestly, what the hell is the point of starting this thread? We've all had our say on this topic mostly because of you defending them. The only reason for you to start this thread is to try and create an argument. You've gotta have something to do between reading muscle mags and watching your balls shrink up to the size of an infants.
  4. Nandralone doesn't save babies. I don't understand why you associate the two. Coedine is a good painkiller too, but nobody rationalizes the abuse of Cocaine by exalting Coedine's virtues.
  5. Carlos Silva walked two batters.... I know it doesn't sound like a lot, but he didn't walk more than one batter in a game all last season, and finished with a single digit walk total.
  6. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Apr 6, 2006 -> 08:38 PM) Texas has scored 3 runs today too. And everyone remember how well the Dodgers started off 05, to the point that people were starting to look at the team, see guys like Depodesta and Bradley smiling because they were showing up all those sportwriters who didn't believe in the team? How did that work out for them? Well the Las Vegas 51's that replaced them didn't fare too well, but the group that started the year as starters would have run away with that division.
  7. QUOTE(fathom @ Apr 6, 2006 -> 04:56 PM) There's not a single person on this site who would have been upset if Cotts came in and blew the game against Hafner. That's not correct either though. There would have been plenty of people upset, but their anger would have been directed at Neal, not Ozzie.
  8. QUOTE(Jordan4life_2006 @ Apr 6, 2006 -> 04:34 PM) Didn't Cotts pitch two innings the day before? You know Ozzie. There's no such thing as a 'rookie' with him. So I should expect Brian Anderson to bat cleanup against Bartolo Colon and John Lackey, right? Using Neal Cotts' 2004 season as an example, Ozzie only used Neal in 6 games all year when the Sox had a lead of 3 runs or less. Using Bobby Jenks as an example, Bobby wasn't used in any pressure situations until the 14 inning game with the twins when he pitched 3 in extras, that was after almost 2 months in the majors. Only then was he started to be worked into the pressure situations.
  9. QUOTE(Jordan4life_2006 @ Apr 6, 2006 -> 04:22 PM) Like I said, you can't hide the guy all year. Everbody wants Ozzie to shield Logan and Thornton, that's just not realistic over a 162 game schedule. You have to see what guys can do in pressure situations. Ah, but we're only talking about 3 games. Only one of which was close and against our chief competition in the Central.
  10. Monday Night vs. the Cardinals??? When was the last time the Cards had a Monday nighter?
  11. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Apr 6, 2006 -> 12:39 AM) Hey, did anyone catch DJ talking about how hitters were going to put good swings on the ball against Logan all year long, only to foul them back or pop them up and wonder how they hell they did that? And then how the next pitch landed 900 feet away? I kind of thought that was funny myslf. Oh I caught it... It wasn't halfway out of his mouth, and I was telling him to STFU. :uhoh
  12. QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Apr 5, 2006 -> 08:53 PM) Ryan Zimmerman is good I was going to pick him for my NL ROY, but I couldn't do it because of that damn park he plays in.

  14. Comparing Ozzie against himself... In 2004, Cotts, then the second lefty in the pen, got a total of 6 hold opportunities. He blew 2 of them. His first hold opportunity was the last week in April. He had 7 innings of low-leverage work in, with an ERA of 1.29.
  15. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Apr 5, 2006 -> 09:25 PM) GMAB. Did anyone happen to mention that using Logan early just so happened to leave Ozzie Neal Cotts to fave Travis Hafner late in the game? Would you rather have seen Logan or Thornton facing Haf in the 9th or 7th? If you retire Hafner in the 8th, you don't have to face him in the 9th. (Hafner wasn't up in the 7th; I don't understand that question) With six outs left in a one run game, and two lefties and a switch-hitter due up in the inning, Neal Cotts is your pitcher. No question. I defend Ozzie when he's right, and have done so when it's the unpopular position in the past. Today, he was dead wrong. So he's getting called out for it. No amount of World Series titles afford him the luxury of being completely immune to criticism. You can continue to say he's testing these guys so they can succeed in the future, but that's just you rationalizing a poor decision. Ozzie didn't throw Jenks into the fire last year, and he has better stuff, better ratings from scouts, and a better minor league track record. Jenks was in the Bigs for almost a month before he saw his first HOLD opportunity. It was almost 2 months before he got his first save opportunity. And that was ONLY because Hermanson blew the save in the 9th. Jenks was around for the save in the 10th. It was only after that 10th inning save, and the scoreless three innings in extras against Minnesota that he started being used with the lead in close games. This is exactly the kind of decision that JM is still derided for today. I seem to remember him putting a young lefty in his second game in a position to fail predictably. And if you think that one game against the Indians doesn't mean anything "in the grand scheme of things," I don't think you understand how precious every win will be in the Central division this year.
  16. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Apr 5, 2006 -> 06:14 PM) And this proves my point that you and many, many others, don't get what Ozzie is doing at all. Ozzie does not manage for April. He is managing for October. You hurt your chances of playing in October by making stupid ass decisions in April too. They're also not won when you have 21 year old rookie ball pitchers facing the best lefthanded batter in the division. That's not even mentioning the 4 better options Ozzie had in that situation.
  17. QUOTE(Jimbo's Drinker @ Apr 3, 2006 -> 03:00 AM) 4. the tribe has no bullpen. Yep. 5.2 IP 0R today. They suck
  18. I don't think anyone should be surprised at the outcome of the Miller-Anderson at-bat.
  19. Podsednik's lookin' good. I'm sure he'll be ready once spring training is over.
  20. QUOTE(BabyJesus69 @ Apr 5, 2006 -> 01:30 AM) you use the word 'just' too liberally. i'm pretty sure that at least 3 of them were 4 time state finalists in high school My point was those are guys they are supposed to have already. That they got away is an indictment of Zalesky.
  21. I just noticed the name Ernie Young, he's the real-life Crash Davis.
  22. BEWARE!!! THIS IS NSFW... but it definitely fits the thread title. http://www.flurl.com/item/Shaving_u_112633/
