  1. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Aug 2, 2012 -> 04:52 AM) You can attack him in the same fashion, thats called freedom of speech. Are you really trying to sell that Christians are being oppressed? Not oppressed, but nobody cares if Maher or anybody blasts us Christians. It has come to be expected that we get blasted. No outrage. No nothing. Jokes about abusive priests ... ha ha. No problem. But if somebody gets up on a stage and blasts gays or other segments of society, there is hell to pay. I don't want gays to be mocked or blasted but if somebody decides to attack believers ... big deal. I'm not getting on Jake. Let's just use what he said here as a PERFECT example, however. He blasted the Bible and those who wrote the Bible. Would anybody reading that even bat an eyelash and think anything is wrong? That it might offend greg or other Christians? Of course not. The criticism of believers is expected and commonplace.
  2. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 02:20 PM) I'm confused by the notion that the "liberal media" refuses to acknowledge the existence of evil in the world and the idea that the liberal media says god doesn't exist. Leonard Pitts suggested that this was an act of evil. Pure and simple evil. He said there has always been evil around but the media will not go there. They will not just point out this bastard is evil. No more. No less. He is evil. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 09:36 PM) Which is the best proof of the nonexistence of god. If god exists, he must be all powerful and all knowing (otherwise he is not god.) If he is all knowing, then he must know everything I will do. If he knows what I am going to do, then I never really had the freedom to choose in the first place. Thus, no matter what I have done, god wanted me to do it. Good post. I don't know why that proves God does not exist, however. Some say God put us on the earth and the rest just happens. Allegedly he grieves with the survivors and did not necessarily want this bad stuff to happen, but it did.
  3. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Aug 2, 2012 -> 04:47 AM) I do not believe CFA has submitted an application to the Chicago Zoning Board so its pretty impossible to say what Chicago would do. In fact, they havent even submitted an application to the Alderman, here is the Alderman's actual quote: Sounds like if CFA can prove they arent discriminating they wont have any issues. Or do you think a business should be allowed to discriminate? Of course not. If CFA refuses to serve gays or will not hire gays then they should be run out of town. But that's not the case apparently. Rush is upset at these government officials for saying a business is not welcome and all they had to go on is the CFA owner's stance on biblical marriage. WTF is wrong with biblical marriage anyway? It's how you and I got here.
  4. Here's one other thing wrong with society. What Jake wrote about the Bible is offensive to me. And you know what? Nobody cares. Why??? Because it is OK, it is popular to attack believers. It is acceptable to attack those who believe in God and that sucks.
  5. QUOTE (Jake @ Aug 2, 2012 -> 04:39 AM) Didn't read Rush's bulls***, but we should quit saying that being a "Christian" and opposing gay marriage or homosexuality in general is wrong. There are Christians that realize that the Bible was written and assembled by a bunch of assholes that not only had their own agendas and fantasies (here's looking at you, John the Revelator) but also a bunch of assholes that had no grasp of the concept of alternate sexuality. Literally zero. I have heard accounts from people living as recently as the 1950s that WERE GAY but had no idea that those feelings were a known phenomenon or shared by others. Homosexuality being known as a clear cut preference is very new and real sexual attraction and "love" between the same sex wasn't going on around Jesus and his immediate successors. They couldn't address what they didn't know. Marriage as only being between man and woman makes sense since that was the only thing that made sense at the time. It is easy for a Christian to say that the "true" intent was that marriage was an institution of love. Or you can be like me and laugh at the history behind this major world religion and the assembly of its practices and beliefs. So you won't read Rush's piece and comment on it? I am a Christian and am sick of Christianity being attacked. You know what? Our country is going to hell. This Chik Fil A guy is not against gays; he's not banning gays from working for him or keeping them out of the restaurant. He believes in the biblical definition of marriage. Big f***ing deal. Leave him alone. I am for equal rights for all people. If men want to marry men and women women they should be allowed to. But I confess I also believe in the biblical marriage between a man and woman because that is how we all have come to be. Last time I looked it takes a man and woman getting together to perpetuate our lifeform. If somebody wants to speak publicly about that ... what is the big deal? Again, he is not against gays.
  6. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Aug 2, 2012 -> 04:39 AM) What mayor has promoted a govt boycott on Chik Fil-A? Not really getting the comparison. Chicago mayor or some govtment official is blocking the opening of a Chik Fil A in the Windy City and said that type of business is not welcome. NYC won't go there. Their mayor correctly said a man's opinion has nothing to do with his right to open a business. Right?
  7. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Aug 2, 2012 -> 04:34 AM) Who is exactly against Christianity? Im pretty sure that Jesus said something like One should treat others as one would like others to treat oneself. If Cathy thinks he is deserving of marriage, then everyone is, at least according to the Christian God. But this is the man's OPINION. Kudos to mayor bloomberg in New York. He GETS IT. http://blogs.wsj.com/metropolis/2012/07/27...-new-york-city/ So what if the owner of Chik Fil A thinks the Biblical version of marriage is the right one. He has the right to run a business. Kudos to the NYC Mayor!!! Our mayor should be ashamed of himself. He should be fired actually over this.
  8. RUSH LIMBAUGH IS NOW OFFICIALLY MY IDOL!!!! This attack on Christianity angers me. Why will the liberal media not allow some of us to be Christians?! This society is going to hell and nobody cares. They'd rather pick on the Chic Fil A CEO??? My god. I dare the haters to read this piece from Rush!!! http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/daily/2012/07/..._on_chick_fil_a The Left's Stalinist War on Chick-Fil-A July 27, 2012 BEGIN TRANSCRIPT RUSH: Let me talk about this business with Chick-Fil-A and Chicago and Boston. I personally am in stunned disbelief over the reaction to this on conservative blogs. What do we have? We have two mayors who are essentially Stalinist, who have had no problem whatsoever -- not one problem at all -- with going before the microphones and telling an American business, "You are not welcome here. And if you come here, you will be penalized or whatever the hell will happen." All because the guy who owns the outfit happens to be a publicly professed Christian who believes that "marriage" has a specific definition. Now, this is a classic example of a government destroying an institution that has promoted the kind of society we have had in the past and the kind of society we've always wanted. This is a direct assault. That's a direct assault on Christianity. That is a direct assault on Christians. With economic punishment thrown in including threats from government officials that are in clear violation of the Constitution. I read about it on conservative blogs, and I can't believe what I'm reading! I'm reading intellectual treatises on, "Well, you know, they have the right to say these things, and the solution here is let Chick-Fil-A open a store in Chicago and let's see if the people will visit it." That's not the reaction to have! The reaction to have is, "Who the hell do you think you are, Rahm Emanuel? Who the hell do you think you are? What country do you think you're in?" Now, we want to have an intellectual debate here over the First Amendment? "Well, the solution to this is to let Chick-Fil-A open a store"? Yeah, let Chick-Fil-A open a store with the mayor of Chicago threatening anybody who walks into one? Meanwhile, this company hires gays. They serve gays. They don't discriminate! It's just that the owner happens to be a publicly professed, witnessing Christian. My God, you would think that he's the worst enemy Chicago ever had and the worst enemy Boston ever had! Thirty years ago, if this woulda happened in this country, there would have been an uprising against Menino and Rahm Emanuel -- or Daley, or whoever would have done it. Today we get intellectual debates on who's got the right to do what and say what and say this and do that and do what where. The sense of proportion is all out of whack, and there's no outrage. So, yeah, I fully understand losing institutions. We're sitting by, and we are watching, every day, the institutions and traditions that have made this country great come under assault. Day in and day out. And I've been making that comment for 24 years. Too much of all of this has become nothing more than an opportunity for people to show how smart they are, how open-minded they are when they debate these things. Rather than having an actual, human, real-life reaction to this, which is, "This is outrageous!" The mayor of San Francisco. What is his name? I think his last name is Lee. The mayor of San Francisco got in on this, and he warned Chick-Fil-A, "You better not come here! You had better keep out!" I am in stunned disbelief. A restaurant chain that serves chicken sandwiches is a threat that cannot be abided. Meanwhile, I have a story in the Stack here today that on some of the Bay Area Rapid Transit escalators are human feces. People are defecating on the escalators, and the mayor of San Francisco wants everybody to know that he's not gonna permit any damn Christians in town. Edwin Lee is the guy's name. He wants every San Franciscan to understand that he's not gonna put up with any of these Christians coming to town. And, as long as he does that, people can defecate all over the BART escalators all they want, and it won't matter 'cause the Christians are gonna be kept out of town. (interruption) No, no, I'm not saying it's a Christian country, but we can't deny the founding. Go back and look at anything George Washington ever said -- first inaugural, last inaugural, Farewell Address, first Thanksgiving address. This whole country was put together with thanks every day to God, blessings every day to God. One of the very foundations of this country's founding is under daily assault by one of the two popular political parties in this country, the Democrat Party. I have a story here in the Stack: "Fewer People Can Identify Obama's Religion Than Romney's." Fewer than 50% of the people in this country think Obama's a Christian. That means something. (interruption) We wouldn't have a president... (interruption) Why is it? Well, I don't think... You go back and you listen to a speech. Pick a speech at an appropriate period of time, from any president you want. (Except Woodrow Wilson. Throw him out.) Even FDR. You can't escape presidents quoting the Bible, reading passages from it, thanking God. This guy doesn't. He gives no indication he's familiar with it. (interruption) No, I'm the saying he's not a Christian. Please listen to what I'm saying. Snerdley asked me, "Why don't at least 50% think he's a Christian?" He doesn't sound like one. That's as far as it goes. I don't know what they think he is. The story I have doesn't talk about what they think he is, and that's not the point of what I'm saying. I'm talking about the really cultural transformational changes that have occurred throughout the country just in the last 24 years that I've been doing this, but it's been going on for much, much longer than that. (interruption) Oh, I'm told Woodrow Wilson quoted the Bible all the time. Well, that's even better for the point. You can't find it here. It's not part of this president's experience. I'm not saying it's good or bad. It's just an acknowledgement of what is. But I have been fascinated -- I don't mean to be redundant here -- I have been fascinated to watch the reaction to Rahm Emanuel and Thomas Menino threaten something that's unconstitutional, threaten something that is illegal, and to just so blatantly do so. You would think that the vast majority of people in the country are gay, and you would think that gay marriage is the only marriage there is, and these guys at Chick-Fil-A represent 2% of the country and, as such, represent a threat. These Democrats have to do some of the most perverted things to appeal to their base that I have ever seen in politics. They have to say, they have to do, they have to promise, they have to engage. Rahm Emanuel to the murdering gangsters in Chicago, "Leave kids alone. Take your murderous activity somewhere else." Not, "Stop your murderous activity." Just take it somewhere, leave our kids alone. What a caring guy. Oh, man, our mayor is really compassionate. He really loves the kids. So, yeah, the government, all out assault on the institutions that promote the kind of society that we have. And buying people off left and right. California is a microcosm. That's Buchanan's whole point. If you want to see America down the road, look at California, in terms of party politics. Let me take a brief time-out here my friends. It's Open Line Friday, and we'll come back and throw you in the mix of all this. I'm still working on my iPad trying to get LTE, since they just turned it on so I'll do that and be back and join you. Just a second. BREAK TRANSCRIPT RUSH: You have to love, folks, the irony. Here is Rahm Emanuel saying that Chick-Fil-A doesn't represent the values of Chicago. What are the values of Chicago? Chicago leads the country in political corruption. I don't know if the murder rate in any other city is what it is in Chicago these days. What was the number I had, 234 people dead in Chicago this year, so far, year to date, when talking about what happened in Aurora, Colorado. But maybe Mayor Emanuel is right. After all, Calypso Louie Farrakhan and Reverend Wright are there. Reverend Jackson, Bill Ayers, Rod Blagojevich, Tony Rezko -- yeah, yeah, yeah. That's Chicago values. That's Chicago values. Chick-Fil-A, no, we can't have that, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. Now, maybe if the CEO of Chick-Fil-A were a gangster, maybe we'd have a little bit more respect. END TRANSCRIPT
  9. Guys ... did the CEO of Chik Filet (sp) say anything that bad? Once again this is all over-reaction by the liberal media. I read a NY Times column today that said the Chick-Fil-A guy said he was in favor of man/woman marriages and that society was rotting (not because of gays). The owner did NOT say he would discriminate against gays; he did not say being gay was wrong. He did not say he would not hire gays. He merely supported man/woman marriage and said society is beyond help right now. Does anybody dispute the demise of society?? What the hell did this guy say that was so wrong??? That was against his First Amendment Rights to say?? You see the Boston mayor backed down from his original statements that he'd try to run Chik Filet out of town. Now that folks is discriminatory. My question to you all is ... did you read what the owner actually said?? Did you read the NY Times column today? Society is going to hell and a lot of people are still in favor of man/woman marriage. So WTF???? I don't think the Chik Filet CEO did anything wrong. It's his right to speak out. And he didn't say anything really bad. Did he?? p.s. Why is Focus on the Family so hated on here? The few times I've listened to the radio show I thought it was moderately interesting. Is it cult like?
  10. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 11:21 PM) Looks like Amendola is like "I wouldnt really read that letter if I were you" Exactly! How f***ing dumb can this piece of s*** abuser be? I mean the man is guilty and about to be sentenced. And he's going to deny all the charges in front of the sentencer? Yikes. I hope the judge rips him a new one after reading his sentence. ... Why is it taking so long to sentence him? Serious question to the attorneys on here.
  11. QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Aug 2, 2012 -> 02:57 AM) If he commands more than 3/$45M, I don't want. Can't sign someone with his durability concerns to a contract longer than that, or more lucrative. Even the numbers I just stated would make me nervous. Yes! In a perfect world, his next deal should be for three years. That's provided he finishes this year's WS healthy and as good as he is right now. The problem is if Jake finishes the season pitching as well as he is now, he'll probably get four years from somebody.
  12. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Aug 2, 2012 -> 02:03 AM) And it's not like I was being overly critical as much as making an observation. We woin and I am happy. I am happy that Reed pulled it through but you can't keep giving up walks and hits in the final inning of a save situation without it biting you in the rear someday. He and other rookie Sox relievers have blown some games True, dat. El Rockin usually speaks the truth.
  13. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 10:26 PM) Jake already said he would love to stay in Chicago, buy out and sign him to a reasonable deal. They always say that. If "buy out" costs him money, he's not going to do that. It doesn't happen. Who is his agent anyway? If the Sox don't exercise his option he'll take whatever money the Sox owe him, go to free agency and sign to the highest bidder. If anything, it'd probably be a west coast NL team. Dodgers, baby. QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 11:23 PM) My first choice is to sign him to a 2-3 year deal at the $13-$15 mil per range, if not I am not oppose to picking up his option at all, because it will be his contract year next year. He has throw a lot of pitches this year, but nothing in his performance suggests that he couldn't handle the workload and his velocity is consistent. Last off season we let Mark walk and many of you still want him back. Peavy is a legit ace, if he demands Buehrle type money, I will give it to him. Have you forgotten Jake's injury history? It's not like he's now physically invincible. He's still Jake Peavy an injury concern.
  14. Whenever I open a thread, I see tons of names of people that are in the thread online who never post. ... How can anybody read posts and not get the urge to post? You would think everybody who reads posts would want to vent their own opinions in the age of Twitter.
  15. QUOTE (TheHammer @ Aug 2, 2012 -> 01:40 AM) This isn't as bad as 2005 when people wanted Konerko off the team midseason because he was selfish and only cared about hitting homeruns. I remember one reaction by I think a poster called soxfan1 or something where konerko popped out and he posted GET OFF MY TEAM. Its one of those odd things where I know I'll never forget reading that and being flabbergasted. At least with Ventura you can understand why people would be upset over hiring some guy with no experience. Ugh. I remember when people turned on Paulie. It made me ill. Even moreso than the fans' rips of some of my faves: Jenks, Wise, Pods, Pierre, Dye.
  16. QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 11:34 PM) Do you pay attention to the games at all? This is like the third straight save opportunity for Reed where he has stranded a man in scoring position to end the game. It actually happens quite often throughout the season. Do you think he will be able to close out games consistently if he constantly allows man in scoring position? If you are a closer and you get hit around constantly in a tight game situation, you will blow many saves down the stretch. It's not just nitpicking his stat line, it's questioning whether he can save games down the stretch and in postseason. Sure I pay attention to the games. He is going to blow some saves. There's no doubt he's going to blow some before the season is over. The one he blew in Kansas City really pissed me off since I was at the game, but the bottom line is today he got yet another save and didn't blow it. He is who he is (cliche). He's not dominant. Hell, the games I watch, he rarely blows the ball by anybody. But Brett Myers (sp?) didn't do that well the other night, either (the bunt fiasco notwithstanding). he gave up a rocket single to start the inning and line shot sac fly to right right after the botched bunt. It's not like he wouldn't blow saves either. Robin has to ride Reed as long as he can. If Reed blows 2 saves in a row at some point, I'd assume it'll be closer by committee with the next candidate Myers, then Thornton or Crain. Yuk!! Ride Reed as long as we can!
  17. QUOTE (Cali @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 11:15 PM) Haha man I was pissed.... I still stand by the fact that I think they should have interviewed more people before deciding on Ventura. He's worked out amazingly, but still a horrible hiring process that confused and angered the fanbase. He's proven you need no experience at all. Sandberg should be pissed at teams for not hiring him as well. I heard Sandberg is not as sharp or smart as Robin, though, from somebody who knows both of them.
  18. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 11:10 PM) I might get in trouble for bumping this thread, but a few people owe Robin an apology. Who? I don't remember that much outrage. Most people wanted somebody with experience, but I sure didn't want some of the coaches whose names were tossed out there like martinez and Alomar. If Sox weren't going to go with a guy like Francona, Robin was as good as anybody. It did seem like Robin was going to be a Jacque Vaughn type hire, though. A guy to manage the team through rebuilding. The Sox didn't go that way fortunately, instead keeping most of the main players. Of course nobody wanted Dunn, Rios or Peavy in trades.
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 01:28 PM) LOL WTF? Get off of the crack!!! not without ozzie. hahahahahahhaha Hey, I've never been a total doubter like those on here who clamor for a total rebuild all the time, conveniently ignoring the fact our fans won't support losing. I've never discounted the possibility of players improving this season; true I didn't think Dunn or Rios had it in them. I hope the Sox complete the deal and win the division because so many guys are having excellent seasons. It'd be a shame to waste all these incredible individual performances.
  20. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 08:52 PM) Declining the option is pretty much a given, no matter how good he has been or will be. Sox are not dishing out $22M to any one player. If Jake likes it in Chicago enough to give the Sox a bit of a discount, then he will stay. If he insists on testing the market, somebody will overpay for him, just like they did for Buehrle. I'd rather re-sign Liriano for $11M per year than Jake for $17M per year. Great post. But the discount isn't going to happen IMO. Never does. Players follow the money trail. QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 08:57 PM) with some of these contracts these pitchers are getting, peavy is getting way more than 10mil a year and 2 years Very true. Very true. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 09:09 PM) I just feel like he'll get something like 2/30 from a team like the Dodgers. Also, given his extreme workload this year, I wouldn't be upset if the Sox let him go elsewhere. With that said, it's great to see him have a great year and erase so many of the bad memories from his first few years here. Fathom speaks the truth IMO. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 09:17 PM) It will be interesting if he wants to stay with the Sox or try to get that one last big multi-year contract. Cmon. You know how these things work. He may want to stay with the Sox but after they decline the option, he's going where the money is. Only way he comes back is if everybody is afraid to sign him cause of past injury woes. I personally think it will be four years to the Dodgers for 14.5 million a year.
  21. QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 08:10 PM) 9-3 vs the Twinks so far. Yay! I'll take 9 of 12 vs. KC and Minnie. That's the ticket to winning the division or part of the ticket. I wish we could shake Detroit. We're 10 over .500. 20 over would put the Tabbies in their place once and for all. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 08:39 PM) Read my post and then make your comment in response. Yes, he got the save and that's great. But, a closer comes in and shuts the door. You can't keep living on the edge casue it will come back to bite you Welcome to the world of Soxtalk.com controversy, elrockin. I always get into it with the folks on here; you never do. Now you are getting disagreed with. Welcome to the hot seat; I am enjoying being off the hot seat a while.
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 08:02 PM) Of course most won't remember that part... QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 08:24 PM) It seems that it's been a long ass time since Reed had a 1-2-3 inning. His control is good, doesn't walk a lot of people, but he seems extremely hittable out there. 35 hits in 38 innings against him, that's not the typical peripheral for a young closer who throws hard. I didn't watch a pitch of the game today. I'll tell you one thing ... this is nitpicking about Reed cause when you look at the box score you see a save in a 1-inning appearance. This is a results business only and Reed got the save. Congrats and move on. Who cares that they got one hit? When I look at the box score, I nod in happiness over what I saw from Peavy and Reed.
  23. Good win. Nice to see Robin let AJ hit instead of bunt him over in a tie game and AJ ... BAM! What a great baseball player AJ is. His career year continues. Nice of Rios to get on base in front of him as well. Good win. We must win the series, though. Twins stink and 2 out of 3 is a reasonable request if we want to win the division.
  24. Wow. Another pitcher bites the dust. Thanks for some good memories in a Sox uniform, John Danks. I don't expect we'll be seeing him excel on the mound again. But he had some good moments while it all lasted.
  25. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 31, 2012 -> 09:06 PM) The grass may not be greener, but the dollar bills are equally green, and that's the important thing. True. Oz's wife probably reminds him daily she's loving the greenbacks in balmy Miami. He probably has to bring his job home with him a lot more, though. It's always nice to have a job where people don't meddle and don't f*** with you. Ozzie's longevity in Chicago seemed to guarantee that he didn't have to mess at all with higher-ups - GM Kenny or owner Jerry. It seems to me Jerry only got involved when he had to break up the fights w/ Oz and KW and KW hated Oz as much as Oz hated KW so KW stayed away as well. That's pretty nice when you are your own boss as Oz was in Chitown. No longer in Miami. From watching the Franchise Loria and his adopted son president are going to meddle so much Oz soon will have all gray hair. But he's probably keeping the wife happy with all that cash, so all's probably good in the Oz household.
