Vargas was bad when he was first acquired, but he was at least still young with several years of control. I’m still not sure what this has to do with Castillo being Shields v2.0. Shields and Castillo were both old and bad when acquired. There’s a difference. The Vargas trade and the trades for Shields and Castillo are not in anyway similar. Regarding your last paragraph, your comments make the trade and Getz look even worse if he acquired a starting pitcher that he didn’t think could help the team for the playoff stretch.

Shields wasn’t acquired to have a mediocre season in the third year of the trade. But then again, you already knew this. It’s actually hard to tell that you aren’t @ron883-rolling me right now with this troll-job, because it is laughable at best.

It is an awful comparison. The Sox acquired Vargas because they weren’t vying for a playoff spot, Vargas had multiple years of control remaining, and they had time to try to fix him. Castillo was acquired to improve the rotation right now in a playoff run, as well as improve it for next season, because he’s gone after next season. He doesn’t have much time to figure it out. And thus far, he has been awful through 5 starts with 1 good start. There is no guarantee that the Sox are in this same position next season, so Castillo’s starts right now are even more vital to the team since next year is not guaranteed. It isn’t a good comparison of trades at all.

Ladies and gentlemen, this has to be the first defense of the Shields trade in history with the benefit of hindsight. Good lord…

The Vargas trade did stink for 1.5 seasons. It took him that time to improve. But you are once again making another poor comparison. Castillo does not have the same time as Vargas did to improve as he’s only here for one more season. Castillo is also almost ten years older than Vargas. Players don’t get better nearing their mid 30’s. Thats retirement time. You seem to be thinking like KW and Hahn with Castillo — that an aging veteran starter is going to bring the magic back. It looks like the Shields trade all over again.

What about your favorite player, MVPCA? A 4 hit, 3 homer game with 6 RBIs. Up to 36 homers and 32 stolen bases. His fWAR is now up to a ridiculous 9.1. He will have to tank hard to not win the NL MVP. Shohei is behind him at 6.9.

And if they did have the Midas touch with pitching, Castillo may have never been needed in the first place. See Shane Smith, Schultz, Cannon, Sandlin, etc.

You keep doing this but tying the Sox winning percentage to Castillo is ridiculous. He isn’t helping and the team is winning despite his awful performances. You know this as well, yet you keep making this nonsensical argument. Yes, it can still be a bad trade just because the Sox are in first place. Also, no one wants Jerry to continue paying for old washed-up has-been’s and retreads that are nearing retirement. This has been the Sox way for ages. Lip makes this argument all the time and he’s right. Baseball is a young man’s game. Stop acquiring the James Shields of baseball that are on the steps to retirement.

The Sox can still win games in spite of the players Getz acquired stinking up the joint. Not sure that’s a good way of judging those trades. Castillo has been worse with the Sox than he was with the Mariners — 6.45 ERA and 1.66 WHIP through 5 starts. That’s awful. I don’t really understand your comments about the Rockies giving away Doyle for nothing, but that’s probably closer to what his true value was. He could have been a non-tender by the Rockies in the offseason.

Exactly. You don’t pay a premium for additional year(s) of control for bad players in a playoff run. Grab cheaper rentals that are currently performing well and then sign better players for future seasons when there is a much larger pool of players to choose from in free agency. But the Sox are still cheap under Jerry, so this is what happens…

Actually excited about this. His stuff is nowhere near as good as Hagen’s outside of his changeup, but he hasn’t walked guys at all in the minors. Crossing my fingers.
