  1. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 1, 2015 -> 09:39 PM) I'm always amused by the extreme takes on this. Hahn taking the GM job and KW moving to the Prez job was just one step in a transition process. Hahn has more and more room to do it his way, but KW is certainly still involved. And I'm sure KW has a hard time letting some of it go. It isn't all Hahn, or all KW - it never works that way in any business, nor should it, really. i like what you wrote. 1. it was just bad timing on the topic, considering KW was the main reason it is like that. 2. i still find in unnerving that KW will not let Hahn do it all. unless something is amiss.
  2. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 1, 2015 -> 10:36 PM) The concern I have about going severely underslot with the first pick is that they'd have to wait something like 104 picks for their next selection. All it takes is a few other teams doing this same strategy, and the Sox could miss out on some guys they wanted. I'd much rather just go after the BPA with first pick. you got a point there, but i see it as this, go underslot at #8, save $$$$. at round 4 a prep pitcher may drop and then the sox can come back and offer a equivalent to a late 1 rounder or comp A pick.
  3. QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Jun 1, 2015 -> 10:32 PM) I follow you. My first preference is pitching which is why I would prefer Jay, Fullmer or Tate, in that order but as others have pointed out, its looking less possible. Who is the other player you have in mind? a player i also really like is dewees in the top 5 in most offensive categories this yr. cf.
  4. QUOTE (raBBit @ Jun 1, 2015 -> 09:23 PM) Saying "I hope RV has the flexibility to move Melky from the #2 hole this season" got me absolutely torched in March. I think it's a move that needs to be made. I hate losing Abreu at bats but he hasn't been playing to his ability anyways. I'd go with this lineup until Abreu starts rolling again. L Eaton R Garcia L LaRoche R Abreu S Cabrera L/R Gillaspie/Beckham R Alexei R Soto S Sanchez Also, when do we start giving Soto more of the starts? We've given Flowers 1100+ PAs to show he's mediocre. I say Flowers starts for Sale, Soto starts for Samardzija/Rodon, and Soto starts for every LHP. Soto has been so hot and cold up (game-to-game) I think some regularity could get him finding that potential we were excited about when he was signed. He makes a lot more hard contact. I am sucker for this kind of stuff and it's not tangbile but I like the way he carries himself too. I know the team raves about Flowers' makeup but you kind of have to when he doesn't do anything well. Soto is attached to Rodon during his starts, gets pumped for his pitchers (Samardzija especially) when they hit their spots and I saw him with his arm around Sanchez after he recorded his third out of the game. Again, not a deciding factor, but Soto is definitely a plus in the clubhouse. man that is a nice lineup. but the point is this is until everybody starts to click. it won't be permanent.
  5. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jun 1, 2015 -> 09:24 PM) sweating profusely while here at the computer because I have entered the danger zone hahaha ............... nice.
  6. QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Jun 1, 2015 -> 10:21 PM) I guess my thinking is more along the lines of what the Cubs did with Schwarber last year. I was looking at BA's mock 3.0 from May 25, 2014 and they had the Cubs grabbing Penticost and Schwarber was listed to go 24th to the Pirates. instead, the cubs grabbed Schwarber with the 4th overall pick to which many including myself thought they were crazy. I'm not saying the Sox would have the same success but I'd feel better taking Happ or Stewart over any pitchers not named Jay, Fullmer or Tate. no i mean i like your thought process but i still like stewart over fulmer but hitter of his kind should be climbing. this leads me to my other player which i haven't mention yet.
  7. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jun 1, 2015 -> 09:09 PM) If KW and other upper staff at 35th and Shields did listen to soxtalk poster I think we might not even be playing baseball anymore. We seem to hate on players every game and want them gone. LOL I don't see why folks don't understand that decisions aren't made in a vacuum and it's truly a team effort on the field and off are you saying the poster on soxtalk are wrong..... the nerve.
  8. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 1, 2015 -> 09:06 PM) I don't strongly disagree, but I generally lean towards disagreeing that this is a "smart way" to get bodies into the system. I lean towards thinking its the opposite - international free agents are such a gamble that to me the smart way to handle them is to gather as many as possible. i understand and respect what you are saying. prospects in general are all gambles. there is a slew of unfulfilled 1 rounders that didn't panned out for the sox. look at the gamble on 2 different prospects in the sox system now, Hawkins and Anderson. i am thinking you get 10 and hope 1 or 2 may develop this will be done in 1 full swoop to gather them and develop them. of course hoping along the way. plus this yr there suppose to be a nice group of prospects. now that number of a gamble and see how that equates with 3 players. long odds there.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 1, 2015 -> 09:00 PM) That's funny. I hear Theo Epstein talk to the media all of the time. the sox only follow their own thought processes. JR in a season ticket holder clubhouse meeting. when asked why they are not like every other team in hiring outside the org for upper management.
  10. QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Jun 1, 2015 -> 09:14 PM) If the Sox cannot get one of Jay/ Fullmer/ Tate, I hope they go after Stewart or Happ. i can see why you say that. but if the college hitters is not up to par, and stewart had a great yr, then why is he not higher??? i am soo confuse in this draft.
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 1, 2015 -> 08:53 PM) Because the White Sox could care less what Soxtalk.com thinks, and rightfully so. Anyone who would run their franchise simply off of fan sentiment would be out of a job in a heartbeat. true, but i am talking about job descriptions. this kind of statement usually comes from the GM which according to what i am lead to believe is Hahn.
  12. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 1, 2015 -> 08:51 PM) 1. There is no international draft. 2. If the overspending penalties are harsh enough that taking them turns out to majorly hurt a team, then it will also take you 5-6 years to realize that it was a major mistake. see what i mean on being wrong again. but i disagree on the second. the scarcity of prospects in this systems is horrible, maybe beyond horrible. spend i july 2 and sign all you can. including Vlad son, pitchers and other players. take the 2 yr penalty. next yr, the sox has what appears to be a protected 1 rounder, a comp pick. the next will be a regular draft and the yr after all back to normal. in the mean time the int't drafted players will have develop 3 yrs, it is very doable and it is the smart way to get bodies in the systems.
  13. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 1, 2015 -> 08:49 PM) Presumably this being a sun times article means that KW still gives interviews and answers questions as a representative of the front office. I'd say more but I'm not allowed to read the article. If that's the case, it does raise the question of why he's speaking for the front office or giving interviews as a team rep when that's actually the GMs job now. thank you, i was wondering that myself, but considering my track record today of having my head up my arse, i really was avoiding that. but seriously, would that be Hahn's job, i thought KW was special adv to JR???
  14. QUOTE (Dunt @ Jun 1, 2015 -> 07:41 PM) While I agree that Eaton and LaRoche are playing better, Melky is showing absolutely no signs of life. His May line is .220/.258/.260 and he is .242/.242/.303 over his last 7. He's been a very big reason this offense has been awful this season. Very clearly off the juice. before i admit to that, i still would move in the lineup to around flowers bat.
  15. QUOTE (bmags @ Jun 1, 2015 -> 07:53 PM) Fair enough. Crazy how patient you have to be for foreign scouting. We won't see Marco Paddy's influence for another 3-4 years. this is why i am soo on the sox overspending on the int'l draft this july 2. to resupply the farm that should take around 5-6 yrs to see the fruits of this draft yr.
  16. thanks ss2k5 for this. but i am a little confuse, i think many posters feels as KW is the reason the sox are in this state. so ..... why let him make this announcement????
  17. QUOTE (knightni @ Jun 1, 2015 -> 07:32 PM) 1984-1992 and i was talking when big frank and robin and company was playing for the sox. somewhere during 1990 thru 1998.
  18. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jun 1, 2015 -> 08:27 PM) I don't love the pick either, I think if the three pitchers are off the board you go underslot on one of the college bats. Based on where things sit today, I could see the top 8 7 breaking out like: 1.1 - Diamondbacks - Tyler Jay 1.2 - Astros - Dansby Swanson 1.3 - Rockies - Brendan Rogers 1.4 - Rangers - Alex Bregman 1.5 - Astros - Dillon Tate 1.6 - Twins - Tyler Stephenson 1.7 - Red Sox - Carson Fulmer 1.8 - Thats where the Sox have a conundrum. Reach on Harris, gamble on a HS bat like Cameron or Tucker, or go significantly underslot on one of the best college bats in either Christin or DJ Stewart and use the savings to come back and draft someone like Justin Hooper in round 4 and giving him low 1st round money. hooper should be gone by the end of the 2nd round. imo, seeing how wrong i have been most of everything today, i wouldn't bet on me being right.
  19. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 1, 2015 -> 08:16 PM) It doesn't matter. Projecting a guy you just drafted to be in the big leagues that rapidly and contributing is a recipe for completely screwing up. Heck, projecting a guy in AA to be in the big leagues in a couple years and making trades based on that can be dicey. well it looks as i am batting 1000 in being wrong today.
  20. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 1, 2015 -> 08:16 PM) His UZR/150 would be interpreted as.............awful. Small sample size though. ok, i will accept it and many thanks for looking it up and interpreting it.
  21. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 1, 2015 -> 08:04 PM) If you're drafting a SS and thinking "he'll take over the big league position in 1-2 years" and making trades based on that, you're out of your mind. people have question that at times. but i am thinking of a 2 yr time.
  22. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 1, 2015 -> 07:56 PM) Semien played a little bit of second with the Sox, and wasn't very good. He isn't a good defender. Maybe some day, but there is a reason the Sox wanted him to work in the OF a bit, and it wasn't because he was a standout defensive infielder. southsider2k5 i really don't have no education in advance stats. so i will give way to both of yous. however i really don't necessary agree. btw, he played 26 games at 2nd last yr. how was his defensive metrics ??? just asking.
  23. QUOTE (AlSoxfan @ Jun 1, 2015 -> 07:53 PM) If you believe Anderson will become a top 5 SS yes it would put the sox in an awkward bind, but I don't. I also think Lucroy would make our pitching staff better an his hitting is pretty good as well. He's still in his prime so we'd have a decent catcher for at least a few years baring injury. It's a pipe dream at best but a move I would make if I could an just my 2 cents. nah i was mentioning that if anderson is in the package, i have no faith in Tyler Saladino, so that position will needed to be address and the only way to do it quickly is mlb draft. Martin is really good defenselessly but his bat is questionable. for a yr or 2 martin or newman can then take over ss.
  24. QUOTE (AlSoxfan @ Jun 1, 2015 -> 07:56 PM) I would agree i think Montas will pan out, maybe not as a sp, but as a elite closer. just my opinion.
  25. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jun 1, 2015 -> 07:51 PM) That won't be nearly enough to get it done, but it could be a blessing in disguise. As good as Lucroy is (and I'm a big fan), he'll be a 30 year old catcher next year who has started to catch the injury bug. Seems like a good candidate to start being worse. Good contract, though. i just don't know, the big payment to get him for only 2 1/2 yrs. while i do like the idea, i think it is too much to pay.
