  1. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 03:30 PM) While I agree that police should be held to a higher standard, I have to disagree strongly with your obvious attempts to somehow make them the same as people rioting and looting. Yes, a cop beating a subject and a dude stealing from a broken into store are both violating the law. But the similarity ends there, for better or worse. As far as I can see, you are ready to indict all police for the acts of a few, while vehemently disagreeing with the characterization of looters as the criminals they are. You're doing it by referring to anger as a motivation or reason. If you want to do that, then why not excuse abusive police officers for their anger? How about neither are OK or justified? these are 2 totally different situation. the cops beating and killing of a prep, does tarnish the entire police force, and that is not right. the rioters and looters just show african americans doing it, and that is stereo typing the entire race. i still go back to the mother beating the shiiite out of his son. that goes unnoticed. why, b/c it is not promoting some one agenda. good tv.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 02:09 PM) Common sense dictates that if the Sox have an extra $7 million laying around, and are in the race, they will use it. Maybe that brings us a catcher or 3B, and makes the team even better. that money that Danks is getting paid, is partly a reimbursement for getting rid of his agent so he can sign with the sox.
  3. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 03:23 PM) Sure, their family is in the ranks of the billionaires now. Are they powerless? If they believe so strongly about this particular issue, then they could build a factory for New Era/Majestic/Rawlings/Nike in East or West Baltimore. Wouldn't that be the EXACT solution to some of the endemic/underlying issues that he's going on and on about? Now do you think fans would be content to pay $35-50 for hats that used to be $12-15 USD two decades ago? In order to protect and/or create more American jobs? Pretty sure I know the answer. 2 different subjects here. maxing out the profit for gain and protest of abuse by police officers which cause a death.
  4. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 03:18 PM) I love your logic Balta: Police committing criminal acts is the explanation/justification for violent responses ("Well what did you expect would happen?") Black males committing criminals acts is the explanation for police over-policing and using excessive force. Why doesn't the same "well what do you expect" rationale apply? On top of the fact that, yes, big picture here, all the american people see are black kids, mostly male, acting like thugs (oh no, the loaded word!), acting like the stereotypical young black male that people think of when they want to excuse certain police behavior. They're literally making the case for why more police intervention is necessary and why cops shouldn't have to simply talk people down, they should fear for their lives, shoot first and ask questions later. On CNN they had some young black "political activist," Malcolm-X wannabe who said it was terrible that we were calling this a riot. It's an "uprising." They're not looters, they're protestors. He thinks he's making some nuanced point, but in reality he's just adding more gasoline to that fire you're talking about. and the media if good tv to continue to show this crap. to keep up the stereo typing of the race.
  5. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 03:05 PM) i have watched the video of the mom whooping her sons ass after catching him rioting, like 5 times. excellent, they, the media should focus on that. but no.... that does not bring in the ratings.
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 03:03 PM) I totally agree and that's why I keep referring to this as a chemical mixture. The process is exactly the same from place to place. Something bad happens. People get out in the streets because they feel that their voice isn't being heard. Protest starts peacefully, but still surrounded by police in riot gear. Things start to turn ugly, either the people start throwing things or yelling at the police or the police react first to a crowd that vastly outnumbers them, things start to break down, and then people take advantage of the situation. It happens the same way every single time. then those who were there and allowed it to happen is just as guilty.
  7. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 03:03 PM) I think the vast majority of the rioters had nothing to do with the peaceful protests. I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of them barely knew why the protests were occurring. Just some punks who decided to take advantage of the situation, and now, despite all the "free" stuff they stole yesterday, will be paying for their actions for years. Unfortunately, the people who were going about this the civil way will be paying for this as well, and there is no doubt these actions like setting buildings on fire, destroying businesses, throwing bricks at police, will hurt the overall cause. Has rioting ever worked? yeah the American revolution.
  8. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 02:35 PM) 1. The police breaking the rules and beating suspects is absolutely not new. In fact, in the modern day surveillance society, I can guarantee you it is substantially less now than it was. It's still bad and needs to be fixed, but people have this weird idea that it is a new phenomenon. It's not. You just hear about it now. 2. Similar trend, people with the whole "society is in so much trouble now" thing. Crime rates have been in general decline for a few decades now, and though there are blips, they still are. Again, you're just seeing it more now. 3. Bad acts by bad actors do not mean other actors can become bad actors in response. That is a spiral of violence. What the cops are doing does not justify violence and looting. Full stop. 4. Police departments in the US are generally far less trained on sub-weapon force and general situational tactics than their bretheren in the rest of the first world. That's part of the issue here. Many large city departments are also far, far less stringent on who they let in in terms of qualifications and testing than the others. a very good response. let me ask this, cops in situations, you can see on tv, not shows but in real life. if the prep gives up, raises their hand, why is it necessary to really use force to take that person down. i see several cops hands swinging. that is really out of line and can be construe as excessive force.
  9. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 02:31 PM) An explanation is not a defense. a very short response that is really poignant. i like it.
  10. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 01:50 PM) All I'm doing is taking the same statements these people want to put out about the rioters breaking the law and applying them to the people who broke the law and actually killed a guy. If these riots are uncivilized, if these riots show that the African American community is violent and undisciplined, then the dead body says the exact same thing about the police force. If you keep filling up gasoline tanks and throwing burning matches at them, yelling at the gasoline for exploding isn't going to be very productive. you made a good point. however there are 2 types of rioters at play here. those who want to make a point of abuse, and the other taking advantage of the bedlam happening around them.
  11. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 01:46 PM) That's nothing. Chicago has paid out half a billion dollars in the last decade. in the late 70's i got the holy crap beat out of me by 2 cops while handcuff in a patty wagon. i wanted to go to internal affairs and get a lawyer. my brother forbade it b/c he was a cop. i guess he took care of it, by talking to his sargent. i don't anything else happen from that. so yeah, this police crap happens,.
  12. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 11:11 AM) But the spark that ignited Monday's pandemonium likely started with high school students on social media. An online flier advertised a "purge" after school Monday, starting at Baltimore's Mondawmin Mall, The Baltimore Sun reported. The film "The Purge" (actually, there are two films) is about a dystopian future society in which all laws are suspended for one 24-hour period every year. Baltimore authorities got wind of the plans, Police Commissioner Anthony Batts said. "We had gotten information yesterday that at Mondawmin Mall, we're going to have a large 'purge' of high school students from across the city," Batts said. "We had pretty close to about 250 to 300 police officers staged in or around Mondawmin Mall at the time the youth got out of school." A case of life imitating art? We always have these debates about violent video games results in "real world" violence, and now we have a movie (seemingly) directly influencing real life events. from www.cnn.com http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/...ory.html#page=1 http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/...ory.html#page=1 where are the leaders of yesteryear, the MLK of today. demand and acknowledgement from the powers and for peaceful changes or at least an investigation of this.
  13. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 09:28 AM) That's the point, nobody trusts anything that smacks of Federal intervention/mediation, the police departments won't accept it and it's just not an effective way to run a department...it would be like if a teacher had someone coming to their class and take notes and monitoring them on a class by class basis (to make sure they were teaching the curriculum/syllabus), if someone doesn't trust you to do the job you were hired to do, then there's something wrong with the system. There's no confidence in either local, state or national politicians right now. Certainly not TRUST. This type of incident has happened so many times and been covered up or pushed under the rug that minority communities feel at this point there's no other alternative than attempting to garner as much media attention as possible. Actually, Elijah Cummings is probably the most respected of all, the Congressman who gave the eulogy and who's widely-expected to run for Barbara Mikulski's Senate seat. then he should have taken the bull by the horn and demand a sort of intervention.

QUOTE (flavum @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 02:18 PM) He's probably been overlooked as far as prospect status. He's 25, but he probably should be in the Top 30 in the organization. i will admit, i for 1 was among those skeptical b/c of his age. same with several other players. i am so happy i was wrong and didn't know better.
  15. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 11:43 AM) http://m.mlb.com/news/article/120976524/ji...ck-isnt-settled Callis update article on the top 5-10 picks in the first round... i hit his link for the top 100 and it was nice listing. big surprises at 8 is Tucker. Whitley at 17. climbing fast, Everett at 31, Kingery at 36. made his first appearance in any mock. maybe peaking at the right time. surprise players, i like Dewees at 51, i think when all said and done, he might be a comp pick. in the top 2 in hrs, hits and rbi. Jones dropped to 60, what a steal this kid will be if drafted there. after 70, there are some names i like, i will wait for a later update. nice list nice reading.
  16. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 12:26 PM) I have no meetings scheduled this afternoon, so 1pm today would be great for me. i am so happy they were able to work it around your schedule.
  17. when there is oppression, people will get fed up and protest. in this case the actions of the dept of the police is what is or has trigger what you are seeing. what people are seeing is still a continue act of oppression thru police corruption. peaceful protest, to bring this attention of the action of citizens, is them getting fed up. this was suppose to bring it to the attentions of the "powers to be", it was meant to do good. however this kind of thuggery, that was an independent different group, does not justified the senseless need to cause millions of dollars of damages and stealing. just b/c they can. the lack of jobs for economical ends, moving out of the country is not a reason to justify this barrage of needless looting and violence on the pretense of 1 innocent death. there could have been a better why, if these so call peaceful ministers would have insisted on a federal mediation group to investigate this. instead of allowing the police force to so call police itself. nah! there is a genuine lack of confidence in the present form of the local politics. this is the real reason for this. this stupidity of the few police officers, tarnish the rep of the rest of the Police, men and woment who deserves credit for putting it on the line, being front and center between chaos and bedlam and the innocent people, are being looked at as the bad person. i have said this is the past, how to fix it. tear it down and rebuild the system, by a drastic means. by getting the federal group to step in and clean house.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 08:08 AM) I hate when these guys' bodies break down, though. money is the reason players are still playing. look at the length of today's contract.
  19. QUOTE (OnlyGillis @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 04:39 AM) Pitchers constantly had to shake him off, poor pitch framing, less than average throwing ability. many thanks, i didn't know that.
  20. QUOTE (flavum @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 02:31 AM) Zambrano threw a no-hitter for the Cubs against the Astros in Milwaukee. Expos and Marlins played home games at the Cell. Stuff happens. so with this answer, i pretty much got my answer. many thanks all.
  21. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 02:30 AM) They've done stuff like this before, a series in Miami was played in Chicago like 10 years ago because of a hurricane. It's not a standard procedure but they've done it before. excellent point. but was that a neutral site??
  22. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 02:28 AM) Then you have to decide whether to do a split DH (1 pm and 7 pm) or just starting at 5 or 6 pm and playing two from that point. Wonder about the turnaround for staffing the stadium with less than 24 hours' notice? Probably would go with the second option, because they're not weekend/big revenue-producing games. as an Andy Frain, it is all in the contract. they have stipulation on everything in there
  23. i just don't know. i know i have been spouting about this and alot, but baseball is a money maker. i just can't see the owners freely willing to let it be held in another city. look at the sox and the sCrubs, when it was question on playing some games in sox park. that didn't go over well. what will mlb and the money split be.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 28, 2015 -> 01:14 AM) Yes, but nobody really cares about him or Walker at this point...so not worth mentioning, that point's been driven into the ground by now. i was trying to think of a smartarse response. i failed miserably
