  1. this list is a testament to the hard work that the sox FO has done. it looks way better than last yr. my personal confusions on this list. Hawkins and Trey. too bad there is not a tie category b/c i think they should be tied. Davidson at 11 and Fry at 16 ??? i don't think so, at least for me. #12 thru 17 is kinda of confusing and i would love to hear them explain why?? on the personal side, i like #30 but that is me. i love the respect Adams is getting. how bout freaking time. this farm is taking shape now. the future looks great.
  2. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Mar 12, 2015 -> 06:48 PM) Unfortunately, we don't have the luxury of knowing how the Gillaspie/Beckham experiment will turn out, but I'd almost rather see him at 3B than 2B, assuming Micah Johnson eventually can handle it. That would give us a tremendously-athletic infield, Olivera/Alexei/Micah/Abreu-LaRoche. for me, who i want players/prospects to make this spring very competitive, i have a problem with what he is looking at in a sense of yrs of the contract.
  3. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Mar 12, 2015 -> 04:32 PM) I think these two posts, combined, are it. Chemistry will be a scapegoat if the team sucks, no matter what the real issue is. It'll be lauded as a hero if the team succeeds, no matter what the real cause is. But it's a chicken & egg issue. Everyone's happy winning and they make friends with one another; everyone's upset losing, and they'll irritate each other. another way to think about it.
  4. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 12, 2015 -> 04:29 PM) This always seems to be made more complicated than it is. Do personalities matter in a clubhouse? Of course, they are human beings. Can "chemistry" effect a team? Also, of course. Can it be measured or predicted? Absoutely not. a great post, look at the team of the yanks all the way back to the babe ruth, lou gehrig feud. babe ruth and manager mccarthy fued. yet they won, inspite of the feud.
  5. spring training, now that baseball is starting, it starts there, in spring training. we as fans can see, gage and analyze prospects and newly signed players, players that is going to make a difference in this team. plus to see how the future is looking. this is a passion for me, and i sure for many, but lack of other news coming out, the fans are craving for news. the competition is great, can't wait for the season to start.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 12, 2015 -> 03:35 PM) Gordon Beckham this spring... my anger of really not addressing the extra utility position beside using a regurgitation project, i would really be ok, if MJ makes it and goes north. however, if he doesn't i will go on a 1 day rant. fvvck me if beckham was the right choice.
  7. QUOTE (bmags @ Mar 12, 2015 -> 02:30 PM) The problem with Doug is he over rotates on defense (in Thibs D you are supposed to feign intervention on a drive, but not get too far from the 3pt shooters). He always goes too far and can't recover, or goes for a dumb strip. He'll be good eventually, i'm sure of it. that i did not know. really informative, thanks
  8. QUOTE (bmags @ Mar 12, 2015 -> 03:28 PM) Is there some really pressing issue going on that should prevent us during spring training to focus on our lottery ticket players getting a puff piece? I enjoyed article. I can say without a doubt this guy is going to win at least 12 cy youngs and probably run a successful line of work out videos. ohhhh snarky ..... i like it. : damn, how come i can't up with ideas like that.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 12, 2015 -> 03:23 PM) The whole story is that Doug will get minutes when he is ready to be a guy who can contribute. A short spurt doesn't mean anything honestly. a really good answer, but when he has the hot hand, don't you want him to continue to play??
  10. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Mar 12, 2015 -> 02:20 PM) I don't recall Felipe Paulino looking particularly good in ST last year. and it carried over to the regular season. look how that played out.
  11. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 12, 2015 -> 01:29 PM) Does anyone ever look bad in spring training on the practice field? Just take the encouraging things about Jesse Crain. You would think he has at least a minor shot of being on the opening day roster, but I actually read from some insider non fluff piece, the Sox are "hoping" to get him in a spring training game as some point, so really, if Will Ferrell can play spring training games, Jesse Crain isn't close. Ynoa may be a decent pick up. But until he starts showing how great he looks in games that count, I take all the good reports with a grain of salt. His ERA was over 5.00 in high A last year. comparing last yr to this yr and the strong offseason the sox had, i welcome any and all players, as long it make sense, to compete. competition-competition. take the best north. i am with you, i would love to see crain pitch in a game, to gage how far he is from being a viable asset, an extra arm for the pen.
  12. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Mar 12, 2015 -> 01:54 PM) Keep telling yourself that. very funny, i didn't even see it, i really walked into that one.
  13. QUOTE (bmags @ Mar 12, 2015 -> 01:52 PM) Seriously, people have been begging Moore to take Hinrich's minutes and he mostly has. Last night featured 3 of our 5 starters out, and sixth man. Not shocking he wanted to limit a rookies minutes when niko and snell were required. and i understand the frustration, but we the fans do not know the whole story there.
  14. QUOTE (chw42 @ Mar 12, 2015 -> 06:23 AM) McDermott goes 3 of 4 in the first half and only gets 10 minutes. Yet Hinrich shot like his usual self and played for 19 minutes. Come on Thibs, you need to realize Kirk sucks. 2 different player, 2 different position and 2 different responsibilities.
  15. QUOTE (ptatc @ Mar 12, 2015 -> 02:14 AM) There is some research that shows ultrasound at very low doses can help fractures heal. There is a great deal of controversy as to why though. The typical ultrasound you will receive at a clinic is far too high intensity. This is the version that will inhibit fracture healing and the one that increases blood flow due to the cavitation and heating effect. Its for all fractures due to the disruption of the periosteum. It has been shown to be more effective on soft tissue such as muscle, tendon and ligaments. This is why I prefer not to use it as it is controversial at best so the time for treatment is better used elsewhere. Just look up articles on line there are many of them out there Because its been used for years with varied results. The HIIT usually refers to the high intensity interval training. Which is why I said I wouldn't do it. The high rep, light weight for the upper extremity would be fine but the trunk and hips really need to be addressed as he will be losing lower extremity endurance while waiting for it to heal. again, many thanks for that information.
  16. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Mar 12, 2015 -> 03:42 AM) Rodon definitely wasn't sharp, and his fastball wasn't crisp. They weren't all over him, but they weren't swinging and missing much at all on the fastballs, which he threw 85%. Hence, the idea that he was mostly out there to get to his pitch count (50?) and work on fastball command/control on the corners. He wasn't exactly hit around in the first, balls found some holes....then again, he did get lucky when a runner was stealing and the batter hit the ball right at where Sanchez was running to cover the bag or it would have been another hit. Gallo did a good job of going with the pitch and taking it to the opposite field, fwiw. To me, the biggest problem was his control and the fact that he kept getting behind in the count and was forced to come over the heart of the plate with fastballs. He didn't seem TOO ruffled about things, and Brantly didn't help matters much at all, EITHER. He probably threw less than a half dozen sliders, and they were more slurvish than the sharp breaking one that's his plus/plus pitch. Melton was remarking that Rodon threw 97 MPH at NC State when he broke onto the scene as a prospect, and seemed to believe he was at 95-97 MPH today, but just from the naked eye and the batter's reactions, I'd guess it was 91-93/94. No proof of that at all, just my idea. The change-up, the 3rd pitch he's supposedly been working on...definitely a work in progress and way below average. It will get better if he improves his fastball command, can get ahead in counts and then the hitter gets into defense mode. The one main plus is that he's not going to go through the spring with a 0.00 ERA and force a discussion with Boras and the media about it being a travesty if he's not on the OD roster. As for height, I'd say 6'1 or 6'2", he's a BIG guy, the power in his trunk/torso/legs makes him appear shorter than reality because of his build. a really nice write-up.
  17. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Mar 11, 2015 -> 10:39 PM) Nothing for extra bases, but I don't know about "nothing hit hard." Couple well-hit flyouts in addition to the singles. I didn't notice much about pitch mix. To my eyes, the breaker didn't have a ton of bite and he was leaving stuff up in the zone in general. Didn't look awful, just definitely not sharp. he is a promising rookie with a promising career. i really can't to see when he puts all together.
  18. QUOTE (ptatc @ Mar 11, 2015 -> 11:03 PM) No one else except hockey really uses it because there really isn't much research behind it and it's really expensive. Not just the purchase but the up keep. It wouldn't really be applicable in sale's case anyway as it's usually used for soft tissue injuries not really for bone healing. i think it's more hockey due to the international aspect of the sport. Many treatments are used outside of the US that aren't approved or really researched. These international players and coaches get used to it and the teams follow what they want. Hockey is the most international of the "big 4" sports in the US. many thanks for your input.
  19. QUOTE (ptatc @ Mar 11, 2015 -> 10:47 PM) Hyperbaric therapy does have some research behind it. It is really popular in hockey for some reason. There is one at the United Center and the blackhawks use it. The theory is that the increased oxygen levels as well as the increased pressure helps to increase the nutrient levels going to the injured areas. This is somewhat supported but not great. Where it is really gaining support is in recovery from concussions and decreasing the lasting effects from the concussions. There are currently two sites in the Chicago area that I am aware of that are doing this type of research. There has been a few small studies but the early results are very promising from what people are saying. yeah that was the stupid name of it. i went to google and found the rest. but you are spot on. my question is and hockey players thru their org uses it for deep injury and bone bruising or something like that. i know they, det red wings, claimed it brought yazerman back someting like a month ahead of time. he was our something like 3 weeks doing therapy like 4x a week. now here is the disclaimer. the numbers may be off to way off. i just can't remember. this was late 80's. the other part is why don't baseball use it for like sale's injury.
  20. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 11, 2015 -> 05:07 PM) Interestingly on topic, blog-a-bull makes the case that Thibs is doing a better job controlling minutes for people this season (to the point that it is actually giving opposing teams a better shot at the end of games). yeah i bet that was 1 of many major beef that gar/pax had with thibs. i read that article, i still think that whole interference by gar/pax is a joke.
  21. QUOTE (ptatc @ Mar 11, 2015 -> 09:13 PM) He had better not be getting ultrasound over a healing bone. The sound waves will irritate the periosteum and really hurt. That is pretty much the worst thing for healing bone. Ligaments and tendon you can do it butI'm not really in favor of it, personally. He really can't do any lower extremity lifting due to the avulsion healing. You can speed up healing in the frame of giving the area the best environment to heal. You can't speed it up physiologically, however you can make sure that the nutrients are getting there as efficiently as possible. The best way is to make sure the blood is flowing to the area, hence the cardio work. Not really a fan of the HIIT workouts for him either. The high intensity would not be good for the healing bone and ligament for the lower extremity and this early in the Spring is more for building up as opposed to driving up the intensity. Shoulder, elbow and hip stability type exercises are the key right now as this is really where most of the stress from pitching goes. ptatc, what is your opinion of the oxygen tank recovery. i know it was big in hockey esp when Bowman was coach/gm of det. det used it for yazerman to get him back faster for their run to the stanley cup. i was wondering what ever happen to it.
  22. QUOTE (bmags @ Mar 11, 2015 -> 03:27 PM) My prediction: needless handwringing about saying Micah's stock is up. it is hard to disagree with the proof, that is the stats. he is looking very nice.
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 11, 2015 -> 04:22 PM) Especially since the surgery, Derrick Rose has proven out to be a mental midget off of the floor. Now after the injuries, it seem to have followed him into his game. He's a sunk cost now, and will never be the same player again. We can all cross our fingers, but with where we are today, the only thing I would count on from Derrick Rose is for him to continue to cash the Bulls checks. wow.... a harsh reality check there. but if he can't transform to be a better overall player, you are right. so the monkey is on his shoulder to prove the whole basketball world he can change.
  24. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Mar 11, 2015 -> 03:17 PM) Hes a guy. He could be a really solid 4th OF option. He missed almost all season last year with a broken leg and has a good mix of defense and speed. He will be good insurance in Charlotte. Engel Beltre Beltre is out of options so it's major league or waivers for the speedy outfielder. Beltre is recovering from a fractured right tibia and is on the 60-day DL. Dave Sessions reports: "Outfielder Engel Beltre (fractured right tibia) is "progressing ahead of schedule," Levine said. He is eligible to return May 29." He looked good in the Spring, swatting a .333 average. He had a mediocre year for the Rangers last season, appearing in 22 games and hitting .250. The Rangers like his speed and that he can play all three outfield positions effectively. Look for the Rangers to make room on the roster for him once he's ready. http://www.sportsinjuryalert.com/2014/04/r...ml#.VQBbs_nF8z4 great, another player to add to the mix of players to take north. this of course will help the team to take the best who is performing. competition.
  25. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 11, 2015 -> 03:14 PM) Now a week into Cactus League play, we're going to start doing weekly stock reports for players that are NOT already locked into a 25-man job. Who has helped themselves? Hurt themselves, literally or figuratively? Here is Week One. Thoughts? that was great in insightful. gave me a huge amount of updated info that i wasn't able to get, esp on players who is not in the spotlight. 2 of my players, pitchers are not looking too good. keep up the great work.
