  1. QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Mar 20, 2015 -> 03:00 PM) If micah continues to play well then you put him on opening day roster. If he starts to fall apart then you send him back down. If he were to continue playing well and everyone knew he had the job but you decide to send him down will kill all the confidence he gained from spring training. Now you would have to worry about him taking it with him to the minors and not playing well. I kinda think that affected matt davidson last year. He hit well in spring training but the sox didn't have room on the roster to take him so they had to send him down and we know how his minors went last year. would that not also hurt his confidence?? but the coaches will know if he needs to work on his development, not the player, fans or the press. i think MJ knows this as well.
  2. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 20, 2015 -> 03:04 PM) If he was 21 or 22, I think a case could be made he goes to Charlotte no matter what he does in Spring Training. He's 24, and seems mature beyond his years. If they do take him north, we ultimately will see, it is tougher than it would have been if the Sox weren't expected to win, so the leash has to be shorter, but if he looks ready, I don't see at this point what good a few months of AAA will do for him. Maybe on May 1st, he shows he needs AAA, but as long as he is holding his own, I don't think future progress will be damaged even if the promotion proves to be too aggressive. another good point. another yr will aid in his development in defensive positioning, again that is if the coaches will advice. but to go north b/c the team didn't address that need earlier, may also hurt the player, if he is being rush.
  3. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 20, 2015 -> 02:53 PM) For first pick, gotta be BPA. As for later in the draft going for depth and/or roll-the-dice picks, the system is much stronger on pitching right now so that is less of a need. Need some catchers with starter ceiling/upside (even if high risk), and position players. But you don't start playing that game until later in the draft, like outside the top 10 usually. you and many poster who have stated this, is correct. pls don not get me wrong, but if the system is fully stacked with prospects, then yes. but this system is not, so the best options, getting players who can make the majors quicker and who can help the parent team quickly, esp if that player is being drafted b/c of, let say, a position that is needed.
  4. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Mar 20, 2015 -> 03:00 PM) Isn't it a little too early to declare the 2014 draft a success?? They have received all of zero major league innings played. good point, so for a rhetorical side, you only consider a draft yr a success based on results, meaning making the team. i can see that, i would, for me, like to think a draft yr is a success, if it put viable prospects in the system that can develop in a everyday player.
  5. QUOTE (WBWSF @ Mar 20, 2015 -> 02:55 PM) If the White Sox are thinking of putting Brad Penny in the rotation they must have as much confidence in Danks and Noesi as I do, which is none. There are also rumors the bad guys on the Northside are going to move Travis Wood. I would think the White Sox would be interested in him. Needless to say the White Sox have to improve the back of the rotation if they want to get into the 2015 Playoffs. bingo, i was thinking of him yesterday about finding a better option on the waiver list. i would even trade for him, depending on the cost. i just want another sp to be there for 2 things, insurance for an injury and to help in the dog's day of summer, to help the pitchers with their workload for the run at a playoff spot.
  6. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 20, 2015 -> 02:51 PM) You let him make the decision for you. There are still a couple of weeks left. If he continues to play well, you give him a shot. There are a lot of players that never played AAA. There are some that played very little. When Gordon Beckham came up, he had 7 games in AAA, and was a star like performer. The one thing you have to consider is how he will deal with failure, which occurs with everyone. It ate Beckham up. Micah is supposed to be hard on himself. There could be an argument that Beckham should have spent more time in AAA, but he certainly looked ready the first 100 games on the major league level, so I don't know how those games being in AAA would have made him better. I don't think Micah necessarily needs to play more in AAA if he continues to do what he's doing. But I do think the big test is going to be when things aren't going his way. And that happens to everyone. very good points...... i like it my response in base on 2 things 1. he is hitting great and may be talented enuf to go north based on that, but how bout his defense?? 2. the proverbial wall that all players hit, would he be better for another yr in the minors to work on his overall game and gain another yr of maturity??
  7. a big day in college baseball today, something like 100 games i think.
  8. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 20, 2015 -> 01:39 PM) If Kris Bryant was a White Sox prospect, I think there would be a lot of posts here mentioing a clearing some space in the summer of 2035 for his HOF induction. The guy is a great prospect. I was watching Baseball Tonight last night. Surprisingly, they have a lot of people who think the White Sox will win the Central. Pedro Gomez was talking to a scout that pegged Bryant the second coming of Mike Schmidt. Chances are, he is going to be a monster. And I mentioned this in another thread. Schilling was on and said there is no way Sale will pitch April 12th. Then Gomez who reported the White Sox were targeting that day said they do plan to be careful and Cooper said it could be late April before he returns, which lined up perfectly with what Schilling said. Schilling may be an idiot, but he does know how long it takes pitchers to be ready. if he was a sox prospect, the press would not give him the time of day.
  9. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 20, 2015 -> 02:42 PM) They can use some pitching, but always take the best player on your board, no matter what sport. See Trailblazers, Portland, Bowie, Sam. i know you and i had a slight disagreement on that philosophy with the rebuilding of the team. but now, the main players are or may be off the board. so i still would draft for specific needs b/c this team is in a quasi state or almost being close. one of the sox earlier GM said this and it has always been stated in different way, you can never go wrong with pitching. but there are some really nice positional players that can or may help quicker than org thought.
  10. QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Mar 20, 2015 -> 02:22 PM) Going into ST, my guess was Sanchez as the starting second baseman but as of now Micah is looking like he's the man for job. Its going to be interesting to see how Johnson responds to tougher pitching as more pitchers are reassigned to the minors. here is the really hard question to consider. would it best serve to send MJ down to the minors to continue his development, esp in positional situation at 2b or go with the hot hand at 2b and keep him up?
  11. QUOTE (staxx @ Mar 20, 2015 -> 02:26 PM) They really need to hit at #8 since we lost the other picks. I have faith that they will do so as well. the right pick now, would really solidify the farm. pitching or hitting???? which to pick.
  12. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Mar 17, 2015 -> 03:20 PM) Dark Sky Paradise is much better i like the title. its pretty kool sounding.
  13. QUOTE (oldsox @ Mar 20, 2015 -> 12:30 PM) Davidson optioned Mar 18. well i didn't think he would break camp with the sox, considering his performance last yr. however, i would like to see how he does during the season.
  14. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Mar 20, 2015 -> 01:03 PM) I hope he falls and the Sox can draft him for slot at #8. Would be ideal. Still way early though. dang it, i wish i saved the link, i was reading late last nite and it was a blog. the subject was how some of the favorites may get hurt, esp now with a lot of press of arm problems. now with Michael Matuella-sp, illness, the draft may look differently. if Brady Aiken, is not hurt but has soreness, how many teams will be wary. this draft, pitchers or hitter??? i am sooo lost with the sox picking #8. i was also thinking, with Dillon Tate making a name for him himself, the fire is getting started so to speak. there is, in the same blog, talk about him being top 10 if not, now with Aiken's, top 5.
  15. justice, well maybe not, i just don't like Bryce Harper and his agent. http://www.prosportsdaily.com/Headlines/Ex...rticleId=347169
  16. QUOTE (Jake @ Mar 20, 2015 -> 07:16 AM) A public university also has a responsibility to foster a safe and effective learning environment for their students. A horde of men shouting about lynching n-words could reasonably interfere with that enough to forfeit whatever free speech rights they might otherwise enjoy. Thinking of what I know about 1st amendment rights in schools, which is superficial, Oklahoma may have solid legs to stand on. Precedent suggests that restrictions on speech are acceptable under certain conditions: 1. Disruption - fairly straightforward. Will the speech act cause significant disruption/distraction that is detrimental to the overall atmosphere? There's certainly a case to be made that this case is highly disruptive, though it is interesting in that it probably would not have been without the distribution of the video. I could see some legal twists and turns over that aspect. 2. Offensiveness - how contrary to generally accepted standards is the speech act? It is currently part of the precedent that schools have some authority and responsibility to teach students moral values in the broad sense. In this sense, speech that is entirely contrary to even the most broadly conceived moral consensus can be restricted. I think this case fits this standard best. 3. Interference with school's goals - does the speech make it more difficult for the school to achieve its mission? A legal precedent involved a school's ability to prevent the display of a banner encouraging drug use, which was deemed too contrary to part of the school's aims (preventing unhealthy and illegal lifestyles). The Oklahoma case is fairly weak on this aspect. The restriction wouldn't have to satisfy all three of those and the SCOTUS could dismantle the existing paradigm as well, potentially. Another circumstantial aspect is the extent to which the speech may be conceived as endorsed by the school. So, for instance, a student having a private phone conversation leaked and getting expelled for what he or she said is different from the student getting expelled for the content of his or her valedictory speech. The Oklahoma incident happened as part of a fraternity event, so you have students acting in their capacities as members of a school-sanctioned organization at a school-sanctioned event. There are definitely some ingredients there for that aspect as well. Alright, time for me to disengage my armchair lawyering. 2 things about what you wrote, there are more, but i will settle for these 2. 1 freedom of speech. 2. due process, due diligence, the school violated their rights to these when they disbanded the fraternity. they should have had an investigation proceedings, before they acted.
  17. Brady Aiken left in the middle of the first inning, concerns on his elbow. i would really hate to see Hou vindicated on the fiasco over his draft. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/

    2015 Films thread

i saw Insurgent and i kinda of like it. i know the critics are tearing it apart. i guess there is a lot of unexplained events that happen, that is what happen when the book to too big to make a single movie. i guess, reading the book and know what happens and why, helped. i still think it is worth it.

ok i am suspicious by nature. it just seem too much of a coincidence that yesterday and before, some posters started to voice their displeasure on resigning Beckham. now, this fluff piece came out in mlb trade rumors, wow talk about deja vu kind of a feelings. some posters on soxtalk must really be psychics http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 19, 2015 -> 11:21 PM) Again, if he was a good, or even mediocre option, he wouldn't have been a minor league free agent signing. We are talking about the guys who are past the top 150 best starting pitchers in baseball right now. i know, i am talking about when the sox signed him and gordo. i am using that date. it is too late now, might as well start looking at the players being released. i bet there as to be a better option than penny.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 19, 2015 -> 11:13 PM) If they can afford $4 million, why are you complaining about Beckham's $2 million. Then they still should have a couple million to burn. You are moving the goalposts here. You have stated time and time again that the 2 million Beckham is getting pretty much is what they had left, because according to you they picked Beckham instead of anyone else, , which one of these guys would you have signed? They obviously couldn't have signed them all. then their priorities are misplaced, if they think beckham is the greater need instead of a sp.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 19, 2015 -> 11:15 PM) I think Beckham's signing was more about putting Saladino and the loser of Sanchez and Johnson into the minors to play every day so as to keep developing. They could care less if Gordo rots on the bench. I also believe the White Sox honestly believe that between their five leading starters and Brad Penny, they have enough to bridge the gap for Carlos Rodon to be ready to go by June at the latest. Another starter would have been behind Sale, Q, Smarj, Danks, Noesi, Rodon, and Penny, at least. Then you also have to look at guys like Johnson and Beck as possibilities for later in the season, or just a trade by then. does anyone really think Penny would be a good option in a game???

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Mar 19, 2015 -> 11:03 PM) Yeah, I have no idea how tight their budgets actually are -- I just know we didn't get enough small-guy SP depth but we DID we Beckham, who I just don't think we needed at all. Could be no connection between those two facts. this is a great conversation going on, on all sides. Eminor3rd. excellent points. i hate coming in and saying anything, when you guys are covering all points, but here is mine. Gordo and Penny total cost is ??? the sox could have combine that and help get a good pitcher for the season. so what this team will have 6 sp and when Rodon comes up, 7. so what, the pitchers will be needed for the run to make the playoff and further.
  25. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Mar 19, 2015 -> 03:01 AM) Trailing the pack by 14 lengths Gordon Beckham starts making his move. Coming up on the outside now trailing by 7 lengths after a massive display of raw power today with 2 doubles and a HR , secure in the knowledge that front runners almost always fade and rarely win the race. very creative. i like it.
