2014-2015 MLB off season player movement and rumors thread

QUOTE (Baron @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 10:28 PM) Watch his swing compared to Abreu's and you'll see why his price tag was that low that is far way more advance info than I know. I will take your word. so much for his team of putting out the hype. well he is down, I guess Yoan is next. -
QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 11:09 PM) Honestly, I think there's better options available since its still very early in the off season. I still think the Sox go after a left handed bat with some pop for LF. ok
-
so yesterday comment by Robin about the club not going to trade Alexei, I assume by this continuation of trade talk, most don't believe it...

QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 11:02 PM) I have a hard time buying into the Sox making an offer for Hamels. His contract is not the kind the Sox would go after in a pitcher plus I don't see the Sox giving up two or three of their best prospects the Phillies are reportedly after. You're talking Rodon, Anderson and Montas if Amaro gets his way and I don't see the Sox giving up that kind of talent and rightfully so. If I had to guess, I'd say the Cards land Hamels. They want another pitcher, have plenty of young talent to trade, payroll space and might prefer Hamels' salary over what Lester is going to get. Lester could cost 3-5M more per year. Boston signs Lester, Cards trade for Hamels. good post.

QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 06:25 PM) Bradley Jr has age and upside going for him and as Wite pointed out could at the very least be a good fourth outfielder plus his youth fits into the mold of what Hahn is doing. Victorino is an injury risk, lost a step or two, does not steal bags like you used to, a free agent after the 2015 seson and is about to turn 34, non of which is good when talking about an outfielder. I really don't see a trade match between Boston and Chicago anyway so its all most likely irrelavent. it all depends on how people see it. if in the worst case, take a chance on him. 2 things need to be considered, what cost would it take to get him and can the sox weasel another player (prospect) from Bos.

QUOTE (Lillian @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 10:55 PM) That's pretty much the same contract Abreu signed, and this guy has not established himself, in Cuba, as anywhere near the hitter that Jose was. Big gamble, IMO. as I mention in the other thread, only time will tell if this was a good deal. they, the sox brass may have saw something or have that money earmark for something or somebody else.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 10:55 PM) In 2013, Stephen Drew had a 3.4 WAR for the Boston Red Sox. During that season, he hit the ball fairly well, drew his fair share of walks, and hit for power. He's a good defensive player and a guy who can hold his own at the plate. As a buy low option, he's perfectly acceptable. as I said before, I will never dispute yous guys with the stats. but for the sox, maybe, but the dodgers seems to want a better steadier player at SS.

QUOTE (Lillian @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 10:35 PM) If you watched Gillaspie hang out line drives, all over the park, especially when facing RHP, I don't see how you could conclude anything but that he was one of the best hitters on the club. I think those 60 some at bats that he had in the clean up spot, after Dunn was traded, really brought his numbers down. He had no business hitting there, and perhaps he was trying to do too much, with that kind of responsibility. He's not a power hitter, and had no business being asked to bat in that slot. My only concern with him is how lost he seems vs. lefties. Hopefully, he will improve in that circumstance. If he doesn't, unfortunately, he is a platoon candidate. His defense is an entirely different matter, and he definitely has lots of room for improvement there. toward the end, I believe he just got tired. there is nothing wrong at that. he needs to build up his endurance. also I was trying to get acquainted with the advance stats, I saw he was horrible against lefties.
-
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 09:35 PM) Or you could just give money, acquire a slightly inferior player in Asdrubal Cabrera or Stephen Drew, and keep your prospect of the future. I read today, the reason why some teams are passing on Drew is that his offensive numbers have been unsteady. that is the best summation I can do.

QUOTE (Charlie Haeger's Knuckles @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 09:21 PM) The Dodgers are NOT trading Corey Seager. This would be like the White Sox trading Tim Anderson for 2 years of Alexei Ramirez if he weren't already on the team. The Dodgers want a stopgap player until Seager is ready for MLB, trading Seager for a stopgap veteran makes exactly ZERO sense. they the Dodgers got this huge TV deal and they want to field a team now. a team who can make the playoff and possible win it. with their money, they could dive into the free agent market next yr or the yr after to get their missing positional player. if not they have a player name Sweeney who can be a temp until something develops.

QUOTE (bear_brian @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 10:15 PM) Are you aware that Hamels is a lefty??? can you explain why not all lefties. if most hitters have a harder time hitting lefty, why not throw all the lefties at them.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 10:17 PM) All. the. Lefties.
-
QUOTE (Andy the Clown @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 10:21 PM) I was looking at his overall numbers, not his splits against righties. then again why do you move Semiem in when facing a lefty?? QUOTE (Andy the Clown @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 09:47 PM) Semien moves from 2B to 3B when we face a lefty, with Sanchez coming off of the bench. There is absolutely no way to justify Sanchez playing everyday at this point. He doesn't do anything well. But then again, neither does Gillespie... you have to take into acct the splits.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 10:13 PM) Given that price tag, the Sox either feel they have their money committed elsewhere more appropriately right now or they really did not like what they saw from Tomas. That is a seemingly incredibly reasonable price tag. I was kind of surprise and disappointed. I thought the sox was the surprise team to come in and make the bid. if it is as you said, they may have saw something they did not like, I wonder what it was. I am just thinking they have their money planned for someone. oh well gots to see how this plays out and how Tomas does during the season. -
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 06:03 PM) Seager isn't, but Pederson definitely needs his meddle tested in the majors at this point. If they could get Pederson, this move would have been done already. in this kind of a situation, the sox can't go wrong, however i think a pkg centered around Seager would be my route. i think his upside will be great. Seager and Anderson at 3B and SS, wow.

QUOTE (AlSoxfan @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 05:14 PM) Whatever happened to Allen Craig? He had a pretty good season in 13 an then fell down in 14. Is he someone we might be interested in on the cheap? he is a right handed bat, so the question, is the reason for the bad stats, is it b/c of the AL vs NL??? his stats are not that bad before 14, so what his salery 5 mil for the next 2 yrs?? i don't know.
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 04:28 AM) The problem is there's a good chance we end up exceeding the 2014 payroll by the time all is said and done with this offseason. If you ask most posters here, choose solutions for LF, RHSP and back-end bullpen OR spend the money on Moncada and don't add anything more to payroll from the current level, the majority will go with the first option, especially after 7 seasons without a playoff appearance. Obviously, we'd love to do BOTH. But how realistic is that? Not very. i just don't like giving that much as a bonus up front.
-
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 05:00 PM) Bradley Jr is an incredibly talented player. He'd be a great piece to acquire because that talent should help him to be a very good 4th outfielder at the very, very least with a 4-5 WAR potential in CF at his very best. when you guys base you opinion on stats, i have learned not to doubt you. like you said a 4 th outfielder, then i can agree, but not as a starter. thanks
-
QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 04:52 PM) Think I'll pass on Victorino. Not interested in his salary and I don't trust his health. Bradley Jr would be nice but at what cost? well you must see something that i can't but ..... ok.
-
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 04:50 PM) Juan Francisco's career average against left handed pitching is .159. I don't even need to look at anythign else. He's not a better option than Viciedo and he doesn't play LF. taking a look at the big picture, neither does DV. joking aside, i can see your point.
-
QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 04:16 PM) $13M for 1 year is not a lot for a starting OF. Like I said, he would be a fall back option in a couple months if the LF hole isn't filled and the $ isn't spent. Would you rather take a shot on Victorino for 1 year $13 at the cost of Chris Beck or sign Melky Cabrera for 4 years and $16M per at the cost of a 2nd rounder? in looking at Bos outfield situation, i can see Yoenis Cespedes being a very good option. he did come in as a center fielder, so if injury to Eaton, he can be a backup to whom ever will be his normal backup. in addition he still has hitting skills. now my preference would be Shane and his 1 yr 13 mil. he has a history of hitting RHP and LHP equally with his better stats hitting Lefty. these stats are after he stop being a switch hitter. he will be a really good #2 hitter. he would be a good option depending on the cost of the trade.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 05:15 AM) Boston had a worse record than the Sox did this year so that's not necessarily true. Still, Francisco wouldn't add a lot to the Sox. He's a left handed hitter who's bad defensively. He's also struck out at a 34.4% clip for his career, has only a 7.4% walk rate, and he can't hit lefties. He'd have virtually no spot on the Sox roster and if both Gillaspie and Semien were to get hurt - your #1 and #2 on the 3B depth chart as of this moment - I'd rather throw Davidson into the fire as there's limited data on him as opposed to Francisco where we basically know what we have already. I totally forgot that Semien can play 3b. here is why I was wondering about J Francisco is in 120+ less at bats, then DV against RHP, he out hit DV, more 2b and belted 15 hrs. he is also 3+ mil cheaper. now I do not know if his contract stated a ARB or not. not enuf info. DV hit RHP not LHP, someone mention that he can platoon with Adam, but Adam also hits RHP and not too good against LHP but still is way better than DV. Conor hits RHP but not too good with LHP. so in this stats, it appears that J. Francisco(27) will be the better backup than DV(25). granted there is always that elusive hope that DV can get better. but in less than 120 ab's Francisco out produce the hitting and power stats of DV.

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 12:22 AM) I can't think of a reason why they can't get actual value. I would think that, considering the market, that they would get plus value. Good prospects are currency, so I consider that value. and it's not like the Sale situation where if you traded him and the prospects crapped out, you've really messed yourself up. I would Sale is close to untouchable as they come., any who, there is a huge entertaining debate going on about Sale on another thread.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 12:06 AM) I don't get it. Do people forget that LaRoche hit in the middle of the order for a playoff team last season? I very much think we can make the playoffs with LaRoche in the middle of our lineup. I think we have to fix other things and Hahn seems to know that and be aggressively working on making other moves to bolster our squad. I sure hate to sound like a broken freaking record. but get an A+ pitcher via free agent. get a outfielder via free agent. then wait to see how the int"l players and draft plays out. note, Jose Fernadez (sp) has still not come out of where he is.
-
QUOTE (GreenSox @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 12:11 AM) Yep. Yet another reason to trade... yes and no. yes helps replenish the farm with much needed prospects. no, give up who and can the sox get actual value from that trade.
