QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 17, 2014 -> 10:24 PM) I also remember them talking about how big his arm was, how bad his range was, and how he had some adventures in the OF. that is why I keep on saying that his best position for his ability to play defense is the DH role, right there with DV.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Oct 17, 2014 -> 09:19 PM) So what? 98% of big free agent pitcher contracts turn out TERRIBLE. Let's take his six best years and let some other team deal with him. and if he turns out to be a very good pitcher, lets wait 3 yrs and trade him for prospects?

QUOTE (BaconOnAStick @ Oct 17, 2014 -> 08:59 PM) Don't be so blinded by trying to maximize Montas' value. The White Sox have at least some starting pitchers. The White Sox have nobody, literally nobody, who can be relied on out of the pen. They're not paying for someone either, we know that much. Montas might have more value as a starter for the other 29 teams in baseball, but the Sox have the glaringest of needs in the bullpen. Plus pitching out of the pen should substantially reduce his injury risk. by your interest in trading Montas, you are barely touching the tip of the iceberg in his potential. next lets wait and see after the WS and see who is going to be avail thru trades, and who are avail FA's. the sox knows they have to address the pen, whether thru trades, fa signing or some prospects in the sox systems. the system is design to supplement the parent team.

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Oct 17, 2014 -> 07:26 PM) First, Sox have long term solution at 1B and his name is Jose Abreu. Second, Kyle Tucker is impressive, 6-4 175, he certainly can put on more weight to his frame. He runs a 6.7 60 which is pretty fast, and has been clocked at 89 from the outfield. As of right now, he is being mocked toward the middle to end of the 1st round. Lastly, there are 4 kids I'm looking at. Daz Cameron and and Ashe Russell as more long term. And Carson Fulmer and Walker Buehler, both these kids can possibly come in right away and help out the team. My 2 favorites are the Vandy boys Buehler and Fulmer the usual first baseman is a player with power. so with Jose A playing 1b, the other player can go to dh. in addition, I am talking about 4-5 yrs from now. ref prospect and the draft, at this point no one is right and no one is wrong. it is based on opinions. Daz should be selected before he gets to #8 Ashe should be moving up in the list, interesting stuff Fulmer, a RP - CL who would pick a closer at #8? the sox still has holes to address. Buelher I just think his bread and butter in going to be in the pen overall I love discussing prospect and draft. good job.

QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Oct 17, 2014 -> 06:45 PM) This discussion is ridiculous....what if we can't afford a pitcher who hasn't thrown a pitch in the MLB yet in 5-6 years because he's really good? Really? This is what some of you guys worry about? Unless you have a crystal ball nobody has any clue what will be going on at that time so there's no point in worrying about. If Rodon earns a $100+M contract it can only be a good thing for the White Sox organization, any other thinking is just flat out unnecessarily negative. Heck let's be honest, we don't even know if we will have the same owner in 5-6 years. Anything can happen so relax and just cross your fingers Rodon lives up to his hype. you are right, don't get me wrong. i respect what you are saying. but.... what else is there to talk about? the wx? the sCrubs? someone kicking someone dog on this site? it is all fun.

QUOTE (shysocks @ Oct 17, 2014 -> 06:28 PM) Teams use five starting pitchers and we have three holes. One, we're slotting Rodon into despite having no idea if he's going to earn it. Apparently we're also saving room for a whole bunch of prospects who are months, years, or forever away. If you can guarantee me that one of Bassitt, Beck, and Danish will be a valuable MLB starter in 2016, then I'll agree that we should play the sign-and-trade game, but I think you're really overrating the talent of those guys. There's room for a pitcher on a multi-year deal. excellent last yr prove the mistake of doing the minimum and expect the most. go into spring where the team has options lots of options.

QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Oct 17, 2014 -> 07:25 PM) Just touching on Dayan's "room for growth" -- look at his comps through 25 on b-ref: Willie Montanez (971) George Hendrick (968) Jeremy Hermida (964) Rick Reichardt (958) Dick Kokos (955) Carmelo Martinez (954) Charlie Spikes (954) Andy Van Slyke (953) Cliff Floyd (950) Luis Gonzalez (949) Not exactly a row of guys that turned into average or even above average players. Hendrick had a nice career but he put together a season (124 OPS+) at 24 that Dayan could only dream about. Van Slyke obviously was on teh complete opposite side of the spectrum with defensive value. Dayan reminds me of Wily Mo Pena. Crap defense, crap running, solid power, even good power, but no on base skills, no contact skills. Mo washed out of the league after he proved he couldn't hit enough to stick as a regular. I can see Dayan going to Japan in a few years and having a good career, but I can't see him having a good career in MLB without a major, major jump in contact skill or patience. Things that just aren't likely to happen. another excellent post.

QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Oct 17, 2014 -> 07:27 PM) ~1. That history was between KW and Bora's. Let it go and move on. The Sox easily could have ~2. drafted Finnegan or Nola if Boras really was an issue and probably could have gotten Finnegan or Nola for slot or under instead of going over to get Rodon. ~3. This shows the Sox have no fear of Bora's as they have shown in the past. Montas has tremendous potential and value as a starter so why inhibit that by making him a reliever? Montas only had 5IP in AA,lol. Its easier to find a reliever then find a potential front line starter. Have some patience and let him develope. This is baseball, not Christmas. Its quite possible the 2016 rotation is Sale, Q,Rodon, Montas, Noesi/ Danks. re: 1. why? i like to hate and hold grudges. i get bored quickly. 2. you can not use a what if to prove a point or an discussion. 3. yes there was, all the way to the day of the draft. many had the sox not drafting Rodon b/c of the history. 2 thing pervented from happening 1. Hahn believe he could get it done. 2. salary cap and the new drafting rules. re: why worry about Montas now. let him develop. he may still be a starter.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Oct 17, 2014 -> 07:21 PM) We may not have a problem dealing with Boras like we used to, but that doesn't change the fact that he typically takes his clients to free agency and attempts to get top dollar for them. And quite frankly, he's very successful at doing that. The reality is if Rodon is as good as advertised, he's likely going to get a contract in free agency that will be above our risk tolerance. I'm actually quite astonished this many people are finding this notion hard to believe. just wait until i tell them, i would value Rodon for 3 yrs and trade him and his agent for prospect and needs. ha

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Oct 17, 2014 -> 07:17 PM) I am not sure what the power number was for DV, but it was pretty high. He does have 70-80 power, if he can find the ball. Dayan was also much more raw coming over at 19, which could be good or bad if you weigh Sox player development against that of the Cuban leagues. DV is only a year older than Tomas and with similar profiles I would rather keep DV than throw a large amount of money at someone who may only be marginally better. I think Tomas and DV both have room to grow and improve but I feel like the Sox can take the $7M+ that Tomas will cost over Viciedo and strengthen the club in other ways. If the club scouts him and decides that he is markedly better, than yes make the jump. overall a good post with a great idea. the key factor, as you mention, what will the org scouts think and at what value?

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Oct 17, 2014 -> 06:50 PM) True story: As I said, we have two indoor cats. Both are assholes. My wife and I went to some family thing and left for a weekend, Friday-Sunday. I return home to find our bedroom closet open. The closet has 2 sliding doors, which the cats will open from time to time (this is another annoyance, since the 3 bedrooms in the house have the sliding doors and they always try to open them in the middle of the night, waking me up). at first I didn't think anything of it because they always open them. So I start closing the door and I smell this awful scent of piss and s***. Turns out, they used my half (just my half) of the closet as a litter box for the entire weekend. No reason really. It's not like they couldn't get to the litter box or the litter box was full. They just are assholes like that. All of my shoes are on the floor, including multiple pairs of nice leather work shoes. All pissed and s*** on. All ruined. And the kicker: one of these f***ers mounted a shoe so perfectly that when it s***, a single solitary turd went inside of the shoe and moved down into it. One single turd about 4-5 inches long right in the middle of the shoe. I'm still not sure how the asshole managed to do that. It defies physics really. If the cats had not hidden they would have been outside within minutes. But lucky for them I couldn't find them. And I tore apart a lot of the house to get them. My wife and I yelled for an hour or so and then didn't talk the rest of the night. The only time in 12 years I was so pissed I didn't want to be near her. The cats are still around, unfortunately, but the wife understands that if something like that happens again there's no argument. They're gone. pls forgive me, but that is 1 funny story. these kind of incidents make many pet lovers smile and laugh.

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Oct 17, 2014 -> 06:59 PM) The Boras issue wasn't KW's it was (and is) JR's. When Hahn called Boras his friend he was pretty clearly being sarcastic. There is history between the two sides and that cannot really be disputed. That being said, they are all professionals and adults and neither side is going to sabotage their success by holding a grudge over doing their jobs. excellent, and yes, it was that agent and his draft players before the Alex Fernadez thingy.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Oct 17, 2014 -> 06:55 PM) I understand that they have similar profiles (RH, power, potential contact issues) but there are things that differentiate them as well. Tomas for one, will more than likely start in the big leagues. Something that Viciedo couldn't because he was much more raw. Tomas is much more athletic and figures to be at least average in LF, another thing Viciedo cannot do. Obviously exposure isn't where it is today, but when Viciedo defected, I don't remember 80 raw power being thrown around like it is with Tomas. when DV sign with sox? at what age did he made the majors? at what position did he come up in? Tomas is how old? there is a lot of difference between the two, except for what is being written on his profile of a hitter.

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Oct 17, 2014 -> 05:54 PM) Its management of resources, do you really want to invest a large share of your resources in a SP when you have one for free sitting in waiting? Personally I would rather invest that money in the lineup and in the pen and take a shot on reclamation guy that you can spin at the deadline - as the Cubs have done each of the last two years. Rodon isn't the only pitcher on the horizon, Bassit is not far away nor is Beck and Danish will probably be ready to break camp with the team in 2016. I just don't want to unnecessarily tie up payroll in duplicative assets when there are holes at 2B, LF and DH that need to be addressed. Volquez may not be the answer, but he is one of a bunch of guys on that list that have potential to take a step forward and provide the Sox some value at the trade deadline. Whoever the Sox get, I would not want them to go anything beyond a 1 year deal with an option, similar to the Paulio deal. i believe Volquez said he didn't want to sign beyond 1 yr.

QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Oct 17, 2014 -> 05:49 PM) Agreed on both counts. If Rodon's agent was an issue the Sox would have drafted someone else. The whole Boras thing is old for f*** sake. Hahn is the GM now and has said he has a good repore with Boras so its time to move forward from the KW vs Bora's days. Montas just made his way to AA at the end of the season so to pencil him into the Sox opening day roster is just a bit premature. with the salary cap on draft picks took a lot out of the negotiating for more money. still do you really want to take that chance? well obviously you do, but you can not denied there is history. and if some want to key on it, you can not fault anyone.

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Oct 17, 2014 -> 06:38 PM) No that is not the reason for the comp. The reason is that Tomas has huge power in a right handed bat but struggles to make enough contact to make that power play in the majors. From BA "A righthanded-hitting corner outfielder, Tomas can hit towering home runs thanks to the strength from his thickly-built 6-foot-1, 230-pound frame. Tomas has 70 raw power on the 20-80 scale, and with Jose Abreu already gone, the only player still in Cuba with more raw power than him was Alfredo Despaigne. He has some experience in center field and is a decent runner for his size, but his speed is still below-average and he’s going to be a corner outfielder in pro ball." "Tomas did show some swing-and-miss tendencies at the WBC with an uppercut stroke and trouble handling good breaking pitches. Three months after the WBC, when Cuba took a team to the U.S. last summer to face the college national team, the U.S. power arms were able to exploit some of those holes by beating him with good velocity up and in and getting him to swing through soft stuff in and out of the zone." http://www.baseballamerica.com/internation...as-leaves-cuba/ That description is what draws comparisons to Viciedo. a great find! i didn't know all that. i still think its a gamble worth taking.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Oct 17, 2014 -> 06:29 PM) If you honestly feel this way, then you're completely ignoring history. Both in terms of what Boras clients have demanded (signed for) and the size/length of contacts the Sox have given to pitchers. Sure there is a small chance that Rodon fires Boras or forces him to agree to an early extension, but if he does reach free agency he's pretty much as good as gone. Therefore, you manage the asset accordingly and derive as much value out of it as you possibly can over the next 6+ years. there is only 1 prospect that fired boRass for the sox and that was the Danks family. Rodon will not, b/c and this is my feelings, their dealings with Hahn after he was drafted by the sox. doing things for the long term would be nice, but the history with the above agent and the sox, well for lack of better word, the personal animosity is there. we as fans can not ignore it.

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Oct 17, 2014 -> 05:16 PM) That is just awesome, LMAO. Knock knock, here you go. And then they'll blame your dog for it, and try to get him in trouble. I clearly don't know enough about cats...but if you put it inside and leave it there, isn't it now magically an "inside cat"? Is it outside all winter in below zero temps? Someone's letting it outside, no? Is it possible to have an electric fence or a leash on it or something? I don't think the answer is "well, it can do whatever it wants, it's an outdoor cat." Man this thread is getting great. Throwing poop back, chucking tennis balls at faces. Uh oh, if Steve jumps in this thread it's going to get ugly. But hey, your marriage must be pretty good if that's the most divisive issue so far, so good stuff. here here..... thanks for the humor. i need it today.

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Oct 17, 2014 -> 06:04 PM) Scott Boras is Kris Bryant's agent. Why didn't Bryant get called up in September? Because it doesn't make sense at that time. which team???

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Oct 17, 2014 -> 05:50 PM) I can't comprehend why anyone would want to waste an entire year of Rodon in the pen. We're talking about a guy that most likely (say 90%) will be leaving our organization as soon as he can test free agency. On top of that, it's not like we have 5 quality starters preventing him from being a productive member of our rotation next year. Furthermore, he would fail to build up arm strength and would unlikely to provide us with an innings jump in 2016. The whole idea is absolutely mind-boggling to me. 90 % you are very optimistic aren't you. i wish people will remember who is agent is

QUOTE (raBBit @ Oct 17, 2014 -> 05:55 PM) I also tired of hearing Tomas sounds too much like Viciedo. Not only was Viciedo not a LF when he defected, but people are jumping too much into the convenient fact that they're both Cuban, i will admit that i was one of them who compared the two. but i did it by myself for 2 weeks. it wasn't until today and the timing was right to post it. here is my reason, age and the unknown factor makes them sound very similar. race i believe is not a factor. but then again, what the hell do i know.

QUOTE (shysocks @ Oct 17, 2014 -> 03:02 PM) so does that mean you and Eminor3rd are not keen on signing him?

pitch recognition, eye and hand ability and strong wrist and hands. what amazes me is, and pls think about it, it takes what 1-2 seconds from when the ball leaves the pitchers hand and gets to the plate. in that time the hitter has to recognize it, gage hit and see where the bat make contact with the ball. in that time, they have to be able to swing and try to place the ball. now imagine if that hitter has the ability to hit with power and i am talking about 20+ hrs a yr...... that is a feat. imagine that hitter is an elite 30+ hrs. what a find. this is all done in a span of 1-2 seconds of recognizing the pitch coming from the pitcher. DV is what 25 yrs old, don't count him out, just yet.
