QUOTE (GreenSox @ Oct 3, 2014 -> 11:34 PM) I like what Hahn's done a lot. The farm's a lot better, he's moved dead weight out of town. And a lot of dead weight there was. For all the grief the pen gets, we found at least 3 legit bullpen pitchers this year: Petricka, Putnam and Guerra. And all 3 have the stones to close. He started a rebuilding process, and he's gotten several plus talents. Rebuilding is just hard and tedious. But 2 hitters, a starter and some better defense would do wonders for this team. But that is really hard to find. Not much available as FA, and teams don't want to trade quality players. I think you forgot about Hector Noesi, he was a great find. also how bout all the trades done that brought back a few promising players. A nice rtn for the original person being traded. -
2014 White Sox MiLB Stats Leaders - Starting Pitchers
LDF replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in FutureSox Board
an extremely well put together list. I haven't seen this post and I was reading it now. from the article I am liking Bucciferro and Dykstra that goes along with Adams. I am sold on Adams and the more I read about the systems and its young prospects, the more I think this system should be higher than what, 20-21 in the ranking? I see Adams as of right now as a #2 - 3 sp. what about Bucciferro and Dykstra? -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 3, 2014 -> 07:00 PM) That's actually not bad as long as you have a couple key cogs to make things work. We do. You stick a bunch of platoons around Abreu and it will still look decent. WE just need our corner OF's to be much less terrible than last year, and maybe even count on a bit of an upgrade at 2b. Plus getting rid of the terrible bench will help as well. I hate to say this, but with the way the advance stats, isn't that what the future holds? use advance stats for every situation and needing specialist as players?

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 3, 2014 -> 06:46 PM) Actually I remembered wrong because of a bad signing number... it is actually $1.6 million left. The White Sox might actually have more international money left than anyone under the caps. Now that doesn't mean teams won't pay the tax to go over. http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?s=...t&p=3011138 1.6 mil, will the sox enter the mix and spend for the talent?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 3, 2014 -> 05:47 PM) I would take less power in exchange for a generally better hitter. Only 1 of the top 5 teams in HR made the playoffs this year, Baltimore, while teams 29 and 30 both did. It's clearly helpful, it's not a bad thing, but you can't sacrifice all other parts of the game for power. here is another thought, homeruns help bring the fans out and put them in the seat. that was the old way of thinking, which I always thought insulting. now, fans are getting smarter and I think that fans are more for winning esp in the playoff than seeing all those pretty fireworks go off. at least I am talking about the Chicago white sox fans who are demanding as a whole. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 3, 2014 -> 06:19 PM) IIRC, I think they had just under a million dollars left, but I am not positive. many thanks.

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Oct 3, 2014 -> 05:53 PM) We have been to about 4 or 5 stores and it seems like the setting she likes is around 2,000 everywhere they had one that was similar. I am hoping to check out a lot more places before deciding. She is like in love with that type of setting/ring and the last thing I want to do is upset her if she doesn't get that type. Ring I like to go the diamond row which is downtown on dearborn (sp) and walker. you can get great rings and you can haggle with them. I may be wrong on the location. I have been gone from chi for close to 20 yrs. for me, I would rather go small on the engagement ring and spend on the wedding bands.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 3, 2014 -> 06:03 PM) Under zero scenario, could I justify giving that much money to an unproven 19 year old. I say yes, b/c as much as I hate to say this, I want him, but what numbers will be the bidding begin and the numbers of yrs being thrown around. second, he can be a great fixture for many yrs to come. has there been scouting rpts on him already? I may be wrong. edit. made on mental corrections.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Oct 3, 2014 -> 06:10 PM) I don't see what the difference is between him & Semien. Not to mention, Callaspo was awful in 2014. You better hope that was a fluke, and not a rapid post-30 decline. good point but I would look at 2013 and before stats.
-
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Oct 3, 2014 -> 05:59 PM) Yes, ideally you want one outfielder and one infielder, but if you get two OF you can move Garcia to DH and if you get two IF you can move Semien to LF and Gillaspie to DH, so you aren't talking about high stress position changes here. not factoring DV in this opinion, Garcia defense works out great for at DH. plus less likely to get hurt.
-
oh yeah I totally agree with yous guys. you remember last yr draft, there were about 4 certified top 3 picks. then Jeff Hoffman got hurt and then the domino chips starts to fall. that was exciting and made things more of an anticipated wait and see. that kind of excitement is what make the draft great. btw, look at the 2nd rounder who the sox pick. he was projected to be a late 1st rounder, he fell to the 2nd rounder and for me screwed up my hope for a catcher in the 2 round who I was following.
-
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 3, 2014 -> 05:48 PM) Interesting. It would seem that if you are his agent, you are getting him declared sometime before next July 2nd. If they can't, then it is great for the Sox as the Yanks / Red Sox are out of the race and the other big international spender would be the Dodgers. 10 yrs 150 million for a young Puig.
-
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 3, 2014 -> 05:34 PM) I wonder if Hahn would look / consider someone like Callaspo as a potential platoon guy who can play 3B against LHP and also play elsewhere in the infield. I presume not, given the glut of infielders we have, but in general, he could be a nice value signing. why not, great idea and he really fills a hole that the sox have.

QUOTE (shysocks @ Oct 3, 2014 -> 01:47 PM) The good news: As I try to explain on a weekly basis, a bad bullpen can be one of the quickest things to turn around, due simply to randomness if nothing else. Sign one good starting pitcher who stays healthy instead of giving 34 starts to the Carroll/Rienzo/Paulino hydra. Get an outfielder who isn't Dayan Viciedo. Use the rotating DH plan. It isn't that difficult to imagine the Sox competing next year because a lot of the guys who cost us games will be gone. I am with you on this. the free agent does not have to be the best material but those who can really fill a hole even if it is short term. getting a player who is an absolute beast in power is not a requirement for not looking for a player who may hit 15+ hrs with a good to great K's to balls ratio. I could go on with my point to cover the pitching, but I think you all know what I am driving at. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 3, 2014 -> 12:57 PM) 21 home runs really isn't that helpful if a guy is putting up the rest of the numbers Viciedo put up. He's bad on defense, he struck out 120+ times, he doesn't get on base, he didn't bring really anything else useful to the table, and he's going rapidly the wrong way. This is a bad combination. and I agree 100%. but don't forget he has power, players with power does not grow on trees. also replacing that player with another player with same or more power and have better hitting avg is going to be hard. -
QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Oct 3, 2014 -> 03:30 PM) Here's an interesting Kiley McDaniel piece on Cuban INF Yoan Moncado. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/yoan-moncada-game-theory/ great find, good reading. re: Moncada, how much are the sox under in the int'l pool money? I would love to have him regardless of the penalty of going over the limit. Who would oppose to this move? Why?

QUOTE (Dunt @ Oct 3, 2014 -> 12:50 PM) So I havent been here as long as most of you, but is greg an elaborate troll or just kinda baseball stupid? he has been on this site for a long time. so what if his point of view may conflict with others, he help stimulate conversation. this kind of discussion brings out point of views that others may not have thought about. but then again, what the hell do I know
-
QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 3, 2014 -> 06:27 AM) I'm not the only one. Sox got very little for him and now he's excelling. BTW he was despised on this board for the most part for his defense, mental blunders. I'll not rip the Sox for getting rid of a guy like DeAza, but if he continues to excel, I have to think this is an organizational problem. hey Greg as you said, or implied, the problem with DeAza was not his offensive numbers. I think the sox brass had a problem with his defensive mental lapse. I mean using DeAza and DV in the outfield was not an idea that I would like to think about.
-
QUOTE (Dunt @ Oct 1, 2014 -> 01:23 PM) Ian Happ sounds like the best college bat available and there is some talk of moving him to the outfield, I'll be interested to see if they bite on him. I think he'll be there. I been meaning to ask, there was a poster who like David Thompson 3b. so I been looking at his profile and its not bad. I don't know if he is 1st round material now, but a power hitting 3b man. what is funny, Ian Happ wanted to use the cape schedule to show his power. well he and Thompson was tied. interesting stats on Thompson.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Oct 3, 2014 -> 03:37 AM) I wonder when we get our PTBNL from the Gordon Beckham trade. Maybe it's contingent on how far the Angels go in the playoffs, or how much Beckham contributes. they will probably send cash here is another thought I been thinking long and hard. yeah I know a whole 2 seconds. but does anyone think that a surprise addition and may be starting in the majors next yr may be Montas? I know he is young but really should that hold him back?
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 3, 2014 -> 01:35 AM) Met/interviewed him in person last year right after the draft. Big frame, skinny guy at the time. Plenty of room to add mass/power but long term who knows? Ryan Sweeney was supposed to add a bit more power and become an all star and he never did. an excellent comparison and for those who may point out, different position. I know I am speaking from the hitting aspect.

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Oct 3, 2014 -> 03:10 AM) Some people hate to win - they feel guilty about winning. So they prefer sorry excuses and hero-worshiping and live in la la land. If I get this right, Sale and Quintana are aces. 2 number 1s. Alexei is a gold glover; and the overall Sox defense is pretty good; Sox are 4th in homers, so the power is there.. Ventura is an ace manager- they play over their talent level with his high skills. Pretty close to contending, right there. So...How do the Sox win 73? Bullpen cost 20 games? Bad luck.? Umps fault? If we just hadn't traded elite Addison Reed we'd have made the playoffs? LOL. Sure the Sox could contend. Major upgrades at DH, LF, Bullpen and at 2 starter upgrades are needed (and perhaps 3b), but if they can take care of all or most of that, they could contend. But yes, the Sox have defensive issues (can anyone seriously contend otherwise?) and power issues (middle of the pack statistically right now WHILE playing in a major home run hitters park). Could this be cured in 6 months? Sure Is it close? No. define upgrade, someone who will hit with power isn't that DV? how many hrs does he have? they may lose those power numbers that everybody is saying. Dunn is traded / retired. DV - what going to be traded or something else who is going to replace those homeruns? Reed is not an elite, but he is a closer. really how many more wins / saves Reed could have added? no one will ever know. -
QUOTE (daggins @ Oct 3, 2014 -> 01:01 AM) Bailey and Hochevar would be good short term pickups with upside. Same with Brandon Morrow. I think the Sox can find pitching on the cheap, and spend on a good position player. Pony up for Panda or Headley. I am finding that Cincy situation may be very interesting and they may be a really good trade partner.
-
saw this on the rumor page. I also been wondering about it. a lot of posters have been saying that DV may not be on the roster next yr. ok, what will the sox do, try to trade him? do they non tender him? does DV have any value what so ever? I mean lets really look at his stats. the key will be the hrs. I know the stat people will answered that the rest better than I, but he still has value. he is what 25+ or so. now for me, I have never been a fan of him. I would have entertain trades ideas several yrs ago. I would non tendered him this yr, if he can't be traded.
