QUOTE(YASNY @ Apr 27, 2005 -> 09:46 AM) So .. you're going to BS through your masters proposal. I see a bright future for you! LOL Nah, I'm just going to discuss other mechanisms that underly this finding (that's the scientific way to say BS)...

QUOTE(YASNY @ Apr 27, 2005 -> 09:36 AM) I know how you feel. Wish I could help..... and I mean that in the most respectful way. Thanks Yas, you're a good guy.

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Apr 26, 2005 -> 07:44 PM) Someone showed me this at school a few weeks ago. It's pretty cool. There is also one where they test to see if you can read it with no vowels. I bet you can do it without vowels. I can give you a linguistic explanation, but, I oh, screw it, I will give it to you. It's believed that in most languages (like English) consonents hold the power of identification. Although, this extends to, and is mostly valid with reading, it is related to spoken word recognition. Due to the highly variable nature of vowels (you can pronounce vowels with more variability in your speech production than consonents due to the voiced quality of vowels), some experimental psycholinguistics believe that vowels are not encoded in the mental lexicon. Thus, it spreads to the orthographic representations of words too. So, while vowels make pronunciation easy--they might not be what actually carry the meaning of the word. I don't necessarily believe all of that--but it is part of the basis of my master's proposal.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Apr 27, 2005 -> 08:47 AM) Sounds like you need a hug. Yeah. The situation was made worse, that when I last chatted with him (granted, last July) he wasn't seeing anyone... On the plus side, now, 1/2 of the guys I've dated are married or getting ready to be. That means I'll only have to get that call a few more times.
-
Another ex of mine is getting married. Definitely threw me for a loop this morning. There should be some sort of law about not telling people that before noon. Ugh.

I'm so sorry Steff. That really sucks. It really is like losing a family member.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Apr 22, 2005 -> 02:39 PM) Now, ChiSoxyGirl, here's your chance. I think you got the wit to match. I think we're on to the start of something. Hmmmmmmmm........... *tries to find out how to start a blog*

QUOTE(whitesoxin' @ Apr 20, 2005 -> 09:02 PM) It's just part of growing up. Middle schoolers are the meanest kids you will ever meet. Then if they're going to get tormented anyway and we can't stop them it seems like gay parents aren't exactly the problem.... Plus, it's not like kids with gay or lesbian parents have to wear a shirt that says "My parents are gay." Sure stuff gets around, but really. Honestly, I feel like a better answer is to address bullying and picking on people...
-
QUOTE(whitesoxin' @ Apr 20, 2005 -> 08:58 PM) But, IMHO, if a kid has gay parents he will be tormented all his life. Is it right? Of course not, but it will happen. I'm not sure where I stand on this issue.. That kinda makes it seem like the heterosexuals aren't being the good parents then, if they are breeding that kind of intolerance.

Must be nice to have a surplus of foster parents.

Raise your hand if you're surprised she has "batkitties 1-3." Oh, no one. Right.

He must have a huge penis.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Apr 20, 2005 -> 09:38 AM) I didn't vote for Bush either. Still holding out for Kucinich, huh?
-
QUOTE(YASNY @ Apr 20, 2005 -> 09:36 AM) No. I'm just glad Kerry lost. Although Kerry lost, I have a feeling no one in the Vatican was dancing for joy over Bush winning. Neither of them have a stellar record of going with Vatican policies....
-
QUOTE(YASNY @ Apr 20, 2005 -> 09:28 AM) The Vatican made a solid choice for the new pope. You seriously think that people should be denied communion for that? What about the other end--should people be denied communion that oppose the vatican policy against the death penalty?

QUOTE(WilliamTell @ Apr 19, 2005 -> 10:48 PM) That's cool you went to St. Olaf college though. I hear good things about it. Seriously, you should go. Great school. Plenty of extracurriculars, lots of amazing music, super nice people, gorgeous campus, good cafeteria food. I would highly recommend it--if you have any questions about it e-mail me.

QUOTE(Chisoxrd5 @ Apr 19, 2005 -> 09:29 PM) Mark 13 32“No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33Be on guard! Be alert[f]! You do not know when that time will come. 34It's like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with his assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch. 35“Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back–whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. 36If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. 37What I say to you, I say to everyone: ‘Watch!’ ” I dont put much into these people who prophecy on knowing when/if the end of the world will come.... I was going to resist adding to this--but, damn, I couldn't! The Apostle Paul wrote most of his letters/epistles saying that the first generation of the church (i.e. the people first reading it) would experience the return of the Messiah in their lifetime--and he had to switch his tactics a little bit in his later letters. Also, Mark (the earliest and my personal favorite gospel) was written around the time of the destruction of the second temple. Consequently there was a great urgency among the Jews (including the Jews that followed Jesus) that made it feel like the end was nigh. So, if you look at Mark that urgency really seeps through--pretty much Mark is one huge run on sentence (if you have an empty long afternoon count the number of "and"s in the book). Every generation since Jesus has thought it would be the last--great tactic for scaring up believers.

Just went and saw Ani DiFranco (who is surprisingly short, waiflike, and adorable). Played a lot of her newer stuff--but it was a great show. She's so cool. It was nice to see an artist who has a lot of talent (both performing and writing). Just incredible--so glad I could finally catch her. And I would like to echo DBAHO's sentiment of Missy Higgins--I have gotten half of my department hooked on her--she's really talented and heartfelt.

QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Apr 19, 2005 -> 09:31 PM) Luther... Luther... Luther... Oh, wait. He's that bald guy who is Superman's arch nemesis, right? So do I get in to your school now?? Sure, they always need a couple save to save and be fed to the lions (Selah kids)....

QUOTE(WilliamTell @ Apr 19, 2005 -> 05:31 PM) No he wasn't and he didn't want to be. Luther is the reason why there are so many other religions nowadays. After he put his 95 thesis on the door and broke off from the Catholics to form the Lutherans, many other religions came about. Luther was the founder of the Lutheran's. Dude, I went to St. Olaf College. You have to take a Lutheran History/Theology exam just to get in.

That is probably the best news I've heard all day. What an amazing woman your friend must be to stand up to the man who did that to her--and in turn help other survivors. I admire survivors that report more than just about anyone else.
