  1. QUOTE (lostfan @ Mar 1, 2010 -> 04:35 PM) s*** I totally forgot to post that. Someone gets an F for the day. . .
  2. QUOTE (lostfan @ Feb 27, 2010 -> 08:45 PM) He said he knows there will probably be a judgment against him, but he didn't want the bank to make money off him. I'm not sure I am even understanding this--wouldn't the bank not make money but rather just recoup their losses? Although this person sounds so mind numbingly stupid that I probably shouldn't even try to understand this.
  3. Student comes into class today with hat pulled low and a real nice black eye. We were talking about emotion and motivation (intro psych) and I say, okay what are some negative emotions that influence our biological state? kid with black eye: losing a f***ing hockey game and getting in a bar fight. me: um, yes? Okay, what are some positive emotions that influence our biological state? kid in back with canada hat: winning a f***ing hockey game! At least I found something my students get excited about. . .

QUOTE (iamshack @ Feb 24, 2010 -> 01:26 PM) Awww! I grew up with a harlequin GD....always have a special place in my heart for their clumsy hugeness! Yeah, she's adorable. mostly brindle and just a klutz. she just sprained her leg earlier this week so she's hopping along on three legs. She is easily the sweetest pooch that ever lived.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Feb 23, 2010 -> 06:01 PM) What kind of dog, Soxy? My parents have a security system called Watson/Eirnan/Rory/Cian, better known as an English Mastiff and 3 Irish Wolfhounds. They tend to work very well. Great Dane/lab mix. But they really need to watch out for my evil little cairn/boston terrier mix.

Giant dog and regular door locks. Of course I also live in Duluth, so i could probably go without the locks.
  7. Pick up some information on Behavior Modification (or take him to see a behavioral specialist--partly to see if he REALLY fits the diagnosis) if his behavior is disrupting his school work or causing problems/anxiety for the kid. Otherwise he'll grow out of it.

I have had a couple of friends live there after college. (One is still living there.) According to them, the worst thing is just the constant sexual harassment. They've never been in any danger, but they have been harassed a lot.
  9. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Feb 12, 2010 -> 02:14 PM) I brushed regularly through college (well still do now of course) and hadn't gone for like 3 years in college. Went when I had my insurance at Deloitte and got hammered with some fillings. I thought I'd have been fine since I brushed regularly. I now realize the importance of a 6 month check up. Oh and now I don't just brush twice a day, I floss twice a day too. Yeah, I have always brushed and flossed. I was extra fastidious about it when I was without insurance. But alas to no avail. I think the six moths checkups are essential.
  10. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 12, 2010 -> 02:29 PM) Man Charged With Stockpiling Weapons Was Tea Partier, Palin Fan Here's some things he wrote on the "Patriots of America" online network, a popular site affiliated with the Tea Party movement: Me fail English? That's unpossible!
  11. So, I didn't have dental insurance for about 6 years. And I went to the dentist for the first time in that long on Tuesday. And I have s***ty teeth (thanks mom and dad!). So I have 7 cavities. Had 3 taken care of yesterday. My jaw is about 7 kinds of sore today. At least I have insurance!
  12. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 9, 2010 -> 08:40 AM) And just to throw in a twist... characters from reality, who were often made into good or evil in the extreme, but were really neither. This was a particularly strong theme in the winning of the West in American history - Geronimo, for example, or Kit Carson. Thanks for all the input guys! I'm bookmarking this thread and keeping a list. NSS--I like those examples, but I definitely wouldn't feel comfortable doing a native american/old west type thing up here. It's a very charged topic--especially to our Native students.
  13. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Feb 8, 2010 -> 04:12 PM) Howard Roark Oh man! I do not have the balls to make a bunch of 18 year olds read Ayn Rand! I think there would be mutiny! Thank you all for your suggestions--and please keep them coming. Throughout the latter 2/3 of the semester we'll be reading and watching stuff to discuss what makes a monster, what can redeem a monster. So, we're going to be doing lots of critical thinking and playing devil's advocate. The final (class) project will to put a "monster" on trial and have a little mock trial.
  14. I need some suggestions for books/films/tv shows that have a morally ambiguous main character. I am teaching a class on The Psychology of Monsters and want to explore some characters that aren't clear cut as good or evil. The materials would need to be appropriate for first year college students. Thank you!
  15. Sarah Palin scares the ever loving s*** out of me. Seriously. It's like she escaped from my nightmares. So f***ing scary. That's all.
  16. I refuse to believe that this is a representative sample. I imagine it is giving too much weight to the evangelical Republicans. I refuse to believe that 77% of anyone wants creationism taught in schools. That can't be true.
  17. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 2, 2010 -> 11:03 AM) Meh, anyone who has to think about it, never thought about it before which is a bad sign. Its not the movies, you either want in or not IMO. See, I tend to think it's the movies that make it seem like you make a decision right here, right now. I mean, if this was totally sprung on me, I would need time to think. If you have a life and stuff going on in it you need to consider big stuff like that.
  18. Unrelated: but those missionaries that tried to take those Haitian children make me really upset. Throw the book at them.
  19. Eh, the mane was getting too long anyway.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 2, 2010 -> 08:42 AM) Voting While Republican. In Illinois, it is a crime. You've never been to Kendall county. When my mom goes to vote and asks for a democrat ballot they get all confused.
  21. Interesting article about why people vote against issues that would, probably, benefit them (courtesy of the BBC).
  22. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 1, 2010 -> 12:15 PM) Raised over $1300 for Haiti relief. BTW, this is what my cinnamon rolls looked like. I want to go to there.
  23. Can I just say, I really hate the term over-educated. How can one be too educated? Is there ever "enough" education. wtf.
  24. iPad? Hahahahahaha! Did no women work on this project? iPad! Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! I'm okay now, oh wait, HAHAHAHAHA!
