QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 5, 2009 -> 02:16 PM) Colbert's recent tweet: so bill clinton is bringing two women home with him. what a surprise Texts from last night had this gem on there this morning: I'm pulling a bill clinton and going home with two hot asian women. I laughed.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 30, 2009 -> 02:59 PM) New Coen Brothers movie, A Serious Man Partly filmed at my alma mater--who did not ask for money in exchange for filming. Instead they asked the Cohen Brothers to come and speak to the students.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 12:14 PM) This article is quite possibly one of the stupidest f***ing ideas I've ever heard. I lack the vocabulary to adequately express the sheer, unmitigated stupidity in this article, and I'm not sure such words actually exist in the English language. Oh god, I actually laughed out loud.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 30, 2009 -> 09:15 PM) kap you actually managed to make sense, why didn't you just do that in the first place? Is it just more fun to make people wade through the rants? Dammit lost, that is my response to Kap. Seriously, that's some fricking copyright infringement right there.

QUOTE (Disco72 @ Jul 25, 2009 -> 01:00 PM) My understanding of omission is that you have to remove the stimulus that is causing the negative behavior. For example, if a kid acting up in class is getting laughs from his classmates, removing the laughs (postive reinforcement of the behavior) is omission. Another example would be if a child is acting up just to get attention, not giving attention is also omission as you remove the reinforcement (attention) of the behavior (acting up). Taking away something is still punishment, just a different - and non-physical - form. Omission training is sometimes called negative punishment--but that's confusing--so I just go with omission

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 08:18 PM) I understand the theory, and both my wife and I are well read on it - however, try as you might, occasionally there's nothing else to get through to a strong willed child. We do positive reinforcement, we do time out, we take things away - and at times none of it works. I mean it's not like I go around beating my child 24/7, but there's certain times where NOTHING else gets her attention. I hate it, but it is what it is. Yeah, I mean, I agree. But it's tricky--I think (and Skinner would back me up here) that kids cannot be spanked out of anger. They they just learn to associate anger with the spanking--not whatever bad thing they did. So I think you have to be dead calm for it to work.

I voted no. I've spent a lot of time with learning theory and Skinner actually believed that punishment isn't as effective as positive reinforcement and omission training (taking stuff away). And the conditions under which physical punishment is effective are actually very hard to get right.

Zoolander (probably watched it once a week throughout a lot of college) Sense and Sensibility Clueless Office Space Duck Soup/Night at the Opera (I was an odd kid) My Man Godfrey (the Lombard/Powell one) Cleopatra (the Colbert one) Beauty and the Beast (Disney one) The last four were my favorite movies when I was younger. And I watched them over and over and over again

I think millions of small business owners (former and current) will agree with me that it's Wal-Mart. Abbey road is second.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 17, 2009 -> 11:55 AM) Because it's so short? Basically. I would say each 100 minute lecture (length of my class) takes me about 8 hours of prep work. I do that 5 days a week. Plus I have to make up and grade a test a week in addition to re-reading their textbook immediately before the lecture. Reviewing sources. I also have them do little papers (to make it feel more like a real class)--so that's extra grading. I really want them to learn all the material--but it is nigh impossible. It doesn't help that I'm doing General Psych--where it's crazy. So far I have (after the first day) lectured at least 90 minutes each day. Everday--there's no time for discussion, which I love leading. Lecturing and staying interesting for that long is so rough! I'm hoarse by the end and I still always feel rushed at the end. And it's so much more important to budget your time wisely. Bmags, I think I'm above the 75% mark--probably closer to 90% of what I want to cover. But I wish I could get that extra 10%. I hate to feel like I'm not giving them a good survey. Blerg! It's hard work! (But I love it!) -
QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jul 17, 2009 -> 11:05 AM) Believes if you collect welfare and do not have a physical disability, you should be forced to do community service. Believes abortion should be banned in the constitution... it's murder. Believes in a single payer universal healthcare system... but I dont think it's very feasible to implement. Believes marijuana should be legalized, but taxed the hell out of. Believes in a "pre-egyptian" advanced society Believes in a maximum wag... but set it high. Believes DUI laws should be WAY tougher. Mandatory jail time. Believes the DH should be required in both leagues... unless you choose to opt out of it for a game. Believes that affirmative action was once positive, but is now anti-productive. Believes Jessie Jackson is a hindrance to the cause of African Americas... white people dont respect/listen to him. Believes the Electoral College should be disbanded and all presidents are elected by straight popular vote. Believes it would be good to have the loser of the presidential election be the VP. Believes we need to completely pull out of the middle east and let them fend for themselves... Israel included. Believes in "America first" where all foreign goods (minus maybe oil) should have excessively high tariffs and most products are made in America. Believe the 2nd Amendment will never be properly implemented because the original intent was lost in the constant revisions made to the amendment before its final passage. Hell, white people can't even spell his name.

QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Jul 17, 2009 -> 11:03 AM) That is sorta weird, unless he's getting a nod for doing more writing or something. Then again, I'm betting you're a Figwit fan and are coming in with some bias. . . Actually, I'm not a huge Figwit fan (sigh, sadly I even know what that means)--I like Jermaine more. But they're a pair! I mean, it's like you know, you can't separate them. But one gets a best comedy actor nod? Weird science.

How weird is it that Jermaine got an emmy nomination but Brett didn't?

Unrelated to actual thread topic. You think of the pace of a summer class is grueling--try prepping and teaching it. On par with waterboarding. -
QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Jul 17, 2009 -> 09:58 AM) CNN says polling shows that 6% of our population is most likely delusional, most of them born well after it happened. No word on these folks' specific opinions on the Holocaust, JFK, or Barack Obama's citizenship. http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/space/07/17/m...hoax/index.html THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE (TRUST NO ONE). And I was hanging out with a friend of mine's wife who honestly believed that Obama was a muslim. Honestly.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 03:42 PM) It's not about spite. I can't speak for other religions, but I know with most of Christianity it is believed that non-believers, if virtuous/good/etc, won't be punished, but would be in a purgatory/limbo type place. I don't necessary believe that, nor do I believe a lot about what Catholicism says, but I do believe there is some sort of greater power out there that is beyong my comprehension. Actually, I think only Catholics have that option. I've never heard it preached in a protestant church.

QUOTE (Middle Buffalo @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 02:37 PM) I took a sex-ed class in college and felt the wrath of an angry female when I expressed the following opinion: I think most girls who say they've been "date raped" really just got drunk and did something they regretted the following day. I'm not saying date rape doesn't happen, but I think it's incredibly unfair to a guy who hooks up with a girl who's had too much to drink that he might later be accused of rape because the girl wasn't using her best judgement. And, no, I've never been accused of this, nor do I know anyone who has been accused. Here's an easy fix: don't f*** drunk girls.

QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 11:21 AM) I'm just wondering, how do women commit rape? Most men can overpower most women. Does that include women seducing men? Coercion. A guy may get turned on and then decide he doesn't want to have sex--you have a right to change your mind. If consent is not freely given, if someone is too drunk to get consent. I'm sure there are multiple ways for women to do it. We just don't do it as often.

QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 11:10 AM) You win. But while doing my research, I found this to be interesting.... I was an advocate at my college for 4 years, I sat in on school hearings and legal cases. That does not surprise me. The first thing about that work that surprised me was how nice, normal and handsome a lot of the rapists were. But after the first year nothing surprised me again.
-
QUOTE (Tex @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 11:02 AM) I realize that. I like the idea, but there will be some issues to work out, especially for the population with less skills. Also, what penalty would be used for those that refuse service, or would there be a big carrot? I have no idea. Pay for college if you do a year of service? Like really pay for college four years of full tuition and room and board. It's not a proposal I'm going to write to my legislator about.

QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 10:59 AM) I understand that in cases it is about power. But I just don't see how that is always the case. First thing, all rapists are sick individuals, and there is no easy way to determine what's going through the head. I don't see how if a guy kidnaps and rapes a girl, it's automatically about power and control. Those are the minority of cases. Most rapes occur between two people who know each other well (are friends, dating, married, whatever). If you want to talk about rapists you have to talk about the majority of them--and the majority of rapists are people who live in the community have normal sexual desires and appetites but have a need to dominate and control their partners. They are not mentally ill, they are not sociopaths.
