Tim Tebow to appear in anti-abortion Super Bowl ad
Soxy replied to Balta1701's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (southsidetony @ Jan 26, 2010 -> 03:28 PM) CBS loses all credibility (do they have any remaining) and joins the ranks of Fixed Noise if they air the ad. If Tebow wants to make ads, videos, posters, magazines, book, and whatever else he can think of- fine. Go ahead. But not on CBS, and certainly not on a day, one of the "holiest" on the sporting calendar, when the last thing I wanna do is argue with my friends and family on hot topic issues and morality. I love Tebow as a player, and would love to have him on the Bears... but if this ad airs- I hope he burns a fiery death in hell, where he will eternally be sacked, over and over again- by Ndamukong Suh. Please read and post your understanding of the rules of this forum. The thread for doing so is pinned at the top of the page. Thanks, The Mod Staff -

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 25, 2010 -> 04:48 PM) How will Focus on the Family feel if major birth defects increase in 2010 because of Mrs Tebow's example of ignoring medical opinions? Honestly, most serious birth defects are spontenously aborted. If this ad is effective (which it won't be) the biggest consequence of this will be more dead mothers/babies/babies with complications during delivery. Completely unrelated trivia: Also, anyone know what one of the greatest predictor of serious mental illness (schizophrenia, bipolar, anorexia) is? Complications during birth. -

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 25, 2010 -> 05:05 PM) so then it's not unreasonable to think that the Tebow's message might resonate with some women out there? So, getting an abortion is equivalent to giving $20 to charity? -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 25, 2010 -> 12:50 PM) Do you believe that a substantial amount of people believe it is not a serious choice? Ultimately that's what bothers me about this. It assumes that women make this choice so flippantly that a celebrity could change their mind. Of the women I've known to have an abortion all undertook it seriously, with great thought. This isn't something that people decide based on a commercial or celebrity. To me, it's offensive that people think most women would undergo an abortion without any serious consideration. -

QUOTE (Tex @ Jan 24, 2010 -> 09:40 PM) Balta it is a simple case of free speech. He has a story, they have personal experience, not something made up. You want to restrict that sort of speech. I don't. Soxy will support a woman's right to an abortion, but not woman's right to talk about what happened to her and the choice she made. And as I said before, I would be in favor of someone speaking about making the other choice and how it worked out. I suspect there would be ton of support for that message. And if this was set to music, there wouldn't be a problem. Pro sex, drugs, and rock and roll messages What should be a heartwarming story of a woman making a decision to carry her baby, and having everything work out, something too sugary for even a Lifetime Original Movie, provokes anger. That isn't what I said and you damn well know it. I don't know where you get off--I used to like you. Whatever. Welcome to my "Ignore" list--you've earned it. And for a psych major you don't know s*** about the group polarization effect. -
QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jan 24, 2010 -> 06:39 PM) God I hope the Saints win this game. As much as I love Adrian Peterson, he's just about the only guy I like on the Vikings. +1 Plus I am surrounded by Vikings Fans--so I really, really, really want them to get CREAMED in this game. In the worst possible way. SUCK IT BRETT!

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 24, 2010 -> 06:04 PM) I thought it was dead, too. Then I see that response. He's just making a run at King of the Kaperbole. These things are best left unresponded to. -

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 24, 2010 -> 05:43 PM) Tex, I think you are missing my point. If Tebow came out and said, "Choose Life" and was forward about that message, I honestly would have no problem with it. That is not (apparently) the message the Tebow's are promoting, however. They are arguing for something far more complex, don't you agree? They are saying (apparently) in cases of significant health risks to the pregnant mother, forge ahead and bring the pregnancy to term and have the child. I did, and my son is now a famous amateur football star. You honestly don't see the distinction? Oh honey, just walk away from the dead horse. -
QUOTE (Tex @ Jan 23, 2010 -> 11:44 PM) Washington did not have a party affiliation. He did have Jefferson and Hamilton, both from opposite ends of the spectrum battling it out within his administration. I find it ironic that you are so active in this thread Tex.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jan 20, 2010 -> 11:11 AM) I wont mention the drastic difference between number of human lives killed by abortion verse those killed by Hitler. Hitler must be stopped.... but this abortion things ok. Honey, arguing with you is like arguing with the Mad Hatter. Nothing makes sense and logic doesn't apply. Not to mention the contradictions and hypocrisy. Seriously, though, congratulations you are the one bi-partisan uniter in these troubled times. You have managed to alienate and piss off everyone on the entire political spectrum through your diligent commitment to nonsensical bather. And, lostfan, I'd like my 7 day ban now please. -

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jan 20, 2010 -> 11:56 AM) But he's not giving a anti-gay message in the ad. But it's giving implicit support of his views. It's like saying, oh hey let's let the Hitler Foundation make a commercial about the clean air act. Um, no. -

What's the point? Famous (oft-crying) quarterback tells people not to get an abortion? Oh yeah, that will work. I mean, I for one always base intimate decisions on famous college athletes. GMAFB, views on abortion aren't going to be changed by this. What a waste of 30 seconds of my life and millions of dollars. -
Sorry if this has been mentioned. Keep the dog on the leash at all times. That way it is near you (and probably won't dare to pee in front of you). I found that worked with my evil s*** terrier.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jan 11, 2010 -> 04:33 PM) I certainly didnt mean to say that beauty has never been important. I just dont think there was as MUCH of a pressure to look good. First I would like to point out the irony of this statement being made by someone with a hot chick in his avatar. Second I disagree. Women now have many more opportunities open to them (professional, education, personally) so we actually have LESS of a reason to get married and settle down--so less need to snare a dude by looking good. As a single woman I can happily and comfortably support myself. Also, come on! Corsets! Girdles! Hot irons for hair! Putting icky eggs on your face as make-up! That is at least as much pressure. And I think that the ladies in this thread are actually much more beautiful than most of our current starlets. Maybe not hot (which I tend to associate with a very narrow bland generic look)--but definitely more beautiful.

I was actually going to nominate vintage Elizabeth Taylor--she was just gorgeous. And Kate Hepburn, I've always thought she was just so unusually beautiful.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 7, 2010 -> 09:05 AM) If you like brands like Carhartt, and similar stuff - rugged, tough clothing - check out Duluth Trading Company. Great stuff to be had there, and serious warm weather gear. Not fluffy, pretty stuff. Duluth Trading Company gear also lasts forever so it's worth the $.

You don't know cold. . . I have a calf length Eddie Bower down jacket and Sorel boots. I also have a wool hat (with fleece lining) and ski mittens (Columbia) for when I take the dogs on their walks.

I found an awesome used books website I can recommend: betterworldbooks.com Really cheap used books and no shipping. (They do ask that you make a small carbon offset donation--usually less than a dollar.) And they have so many titles! Way more than amazon even. I love it! Also, I have just about finished reading Val McDermid's Tony Hill series. Really wonderfully crafted mysteries. Really good. I also read recently (several times) The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. A really neat book about the Nazi occupation of the Channel Islands. It's also about the transformative power of books. Really highly recommended.

QUOTE (Brian @ Dec 30, 2009 -> 11:57 PM) For the past several years, I always get the new White Sox calendar, but think I want to rebel and get something different. I used to get any one Jenny McCarthy put out bak in the day. What should I get? And No! No puppies or kittens! I love my Edward Gorey calender.

I really love Strict Joy by The Swell Season. I haven't given the Decemberists a listen in ages--but I should. In the end it always just makes me miss Tarkio.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Dec 21, 2009 -> 01:45 PM) I have too many to list here to be honest. I should probably get some meds. Eh, don't waste your time meds aren't particularly effective for OCD. Gots to get some Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for it.

QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Dec 20, 2009 -> 01:42 PM) Whenever I eat I make sure everything on my plate is separated. For example, random pieces of corn must be removed from the potatoes before beginning. Also, each type of food must be completed before moving on to something else. This. Also candy must be eaten in color order. I always set my alarm for a palindrome. The black (or white) board must be completely erased before I can start/move on lecturing. I think that's mostly it.
