QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 22, 2009 -> 02:20 PM) If they believe they can turn public opinion with a war against the country that achy has been saying he wanted to wipe off of the map, they will do it. I don't think so. I think that M.A. is pretty far off from the iranian public and I doubt they would support a war with Israel at this point. I mean, right now the Iranians are basically calling bulls***, and I think they would continue to call bulls*** if a war with Israel started up.

I read a really interesting article about how these deaths are really just going to keep the protests going. I guess Shiite muslims (the majority in Iran) observe mourning at different intervals, 3, 7, and 40 days (I think), so after 40 days the whole ordeal will be revived. I wish I remembered where I read this--but they said that this type of cyclical mourning was part of what fueled the 1979 revolution. ETA: Found it.

2 doggies. 1 is a (we think) great dane/lab mix that a friend's mother found abandoned in a field. She's giant (about 85 pounds) and the sweetest cutest dog in the world. The other is a cairn/boston terrier mix. She is a holy terror and very ugly. I found her when she was a stray, took her to the pound and then ended up adopting her because of some behavioral problems she was going to get put down. She still finds all kinds of trouble (or creates it), but she's also really the funniest dog I have ever seen. And, sometimes she can be a really nice snuggle/lap dog. But only on her terms. I used to have a cat, but she kind of hated me. Attached me in my sleep one night and bit me repeatedly. So, she lives with my parents now (my dad is the cat whisperer) and we all are happier for it.

Should the U.S. adopt English as the Official Language?
Soxy replied to ChiSox_Sonix's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 15, 2009 -> 11:56 AM) They basically have to speak English to do anything outside their tribe anyway because essentially NO one speaks their languages. Sometimes they don't even speak their native languages anymore, many of those languages are gone. And since none of them had a written component originally (a few, like Cherokee, developed a written version to deal with Europeans), they are well and truly extinct. the big move in linguistics now is to try and undo the damage that we had done to these languages. There is a strong preservation and resurrection program for native languages that is having moderate success. -
My sister is finishing up her M.Ed at Aurora, and it has been awful. Apparently they're really disorganized and it was just a very negative experience for her. So, um, don't do theirs.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jun 1, 2009 -> 10:55 AM) I wasn't saying that's what I believed, just clarifying what those people (probably) believe. But based on what you're saying, you don't leave any room for people who are pro-life on the abortion issue to have an opinion on the death penalty or euthanasia other than be against it. Which I will disagree with. It's true--I don't understand how people are pro-life and pro-death penalty. I know lots of people are, but it's always baffled me.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jun 1, 2009 -> 08:48 AM) You just answered your own question. They believe the people they are killing (the abortion doctors) are not innocent life. I think that is just such crap. If you're pro-life be pro-life--you can't just be pro-innocent life. Hell, if those people believe in the doctrine of original sin even the fetuses aren't innocent life.

I've been reading lots of Val McDermid lately. She's a detective/mystery writer in the tartan noir genre. I love love love murder mysteries, Rex Stout, Sam Spade, Hercule Poirot, John Rebus. McDermid is pretty solid. I've read a couple of her Tony Hill series (he's also in the BBC series Wire in the Blood). They are solid. Also read her A Place of Execution. Really well crafted thriller. I am not sure if it was predictable, or if I've read too many mysteries to be surprised by endings but I figured out what happened in the end. But damn, it was still a great book. When I move I plan on re-reading Rankin's entire Rebus series--probably my all time favorite detective.

QUOTE (BearSox @ May 15, 2009 -> 02:04 PM) The thing is, this is a very serious and risky procedure to undergo chemotherapy. If it was a very safe medicine they were refusing to give the child, that'd be different. The child is 13, so it's not like he doesn't know what he's doing. From the article, it seemed both parents and the child all agreed to not undergo the procedures, and so I feel the government has no right to force him to go into chemo. Also, what about the first amendment? But he's 13. There's a reason children can't vote, drive, drink, enter into legal contracts: they don't know what the hell they are doing. A 13 year old can't make an informed decision about medical care. They are entrusted to their guardians who are supposed to make good decisions on the child's behalf. Also, can you clarify what you mean about safe medicine? Do you mean chemo has a ton of side effects? Or that chemo can kill you?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 15, 2009 -> 02:02 PM) Which part, the court intervening to say that the husband hadn't lost his rights or the Congress trying to intervene to take those rights away? All of it?

QUOTE (lostfan @ May 15, 2009 -> 01:55 PM) One treatment is valid, the other is BS. Like StrangeSox said though this whole thing makes me uncomfortable. I guess I'd feel different if he was an adult. Yeah, I think this is a murky area only because it is a child. With Terri Schiavo, I was so disgusted with the court's intervention. But here, I'm uncomfortable--but I think it was the right judgment.

I am torn on the kindle--on the one hand I could save a ton of money buying books that way. On the other hand I love the feel of a book in my hands. Fortunately I am too broke to afford a kindle--so it's a moot point.
