  1. Tim McCarver just lost all credibility saying Thomas is not going to be in the HOF. Ridiculous. Best offensive player in the majors from 1990-1997.
  2. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 6, 2009 -> 03:40 PM) Sowers is just a terrible, terrible pitcher. Anderson got a great pitch to hit, but once again, tried too hard to pull the ball. It's amazing what happens when you start to use the whole field. The best hitters in baseball, usually, are the ones who have the ability to spray the ball all across the diamond. Most of our hitters fail to realize this principle, especially Anderson, who is so pull conscious.
  3. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jun 6, 2009 -> 03:38 PM) a dilemma for sure I know how you feel But with Getz sucking a ton recently, Gordo might get a lot of PT at 2nd base.
  4. Great shot of Beckham picking his nose. Thanks Fox!
  5. This is frustrating. If I root for Fields to do well, it's like I am rooting against Beckham. But if I root against Fields, it's like I am rooting against the Sox.
  6. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 6, 2009 -> 03:16 PM) Just want to play it close to slot and take some signable guys. I have no problem going into the draft wanting signable guys. BUT, if people drop, then you take the higher money players. That's how good minor league systems are built, not on cheapness.
  7. Yay! Thome BBs. Now time for a Paulie DP.
  8. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 6, 2009 -> 01:47 PM) And the draft talent pool just got a little bit thinner. Kyle Gibson has a stress fracture in his forearm and won't be able to throw for 6 weeks. I would pick him with our first pick. Since we have more picks than usual, I wouldn't be afraid to take the risk and draft him with our first pick. I still don't think he drops to us, but I think he is worth the risk. Granted, these types of injuries lead to elbow problems, but he is a top 10 talent, no doubt, and could really improve our pitching depth. He is a Cubs fan, though, but also from Indiana, so would be a good situation for him close to family. Also, a side note on Gibson, which I find hilarious is that his GF is a 5-foot nothing gymnast and he is 6-6, they just look funny together.
  9. QUOTE (Cubano @ Jun 6, 2009 -> 09:18 AM) They will bring excitment to the ticket sales and the fan base. This team will not win the championship with the players we have now. Let the young dudes play and get their feet wet agaisnt the Halladays, Greinkes, Sabathias of these world. I am all for that, but with all the guys except Dayan. See my post above. If we go young for next year and thus cheap many places, you can add two impact FAs to the O and pitching staff.
  10. Don't know how to look farther except going back to every box score, which I am too lazy to do, but Dayan has at least a 10-game hitting streak going on. As good as he is hitting right now, he still is clearly not ready for the majors because of the K rate and BB rate. Just for comparison sake on, as a 20-year-old Miggy C. was also in AA, but he hit: .365 average, 10 HRs, 59 RBIs, 31 BB and 49 Ks in 266 ABs. Cabrera had a very good walk rate for a 20-year-old, so his high Ks were not as much as a concern. So before Dayan, IMO, can be considered ML-ready, he needs a big improvement in that walk rate. Also interesting to note, though, Miggy C.'s breakthrough season (the aforementioned one in AA) was his fourth minor league season. All things considered, Dayan is having a great year for first time American baseball, being very young in a tough league with a ballpark that really suppresses power, but he should not be in the conversations for the majors until next year at this time at the very least.
  11. QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Jun 5, 2009 -> 06:00 PM) I have never been a fan of Lettermans so it probably isn't fair for me to compare the two, but I just find Letterman very boring and bland. You really have to get used to him. I could definitely see how he comes off that way if you just watch once or twice. But I am sure that is the same with all the talk show hosts. My dad watched Letterman, so I naturally followed. Guess it's loyalty to the guy you start with.
  12. I am admitted Letterman fan, but I do like Conan as well. But the first few shows, Conan's monologue has been downright bad. Is it me or do others think that as well? Conan's skill has always been his skits and outrageousness that he is willing to do while Letterman is probably the best in the biz at the interview and quick wit, so I know it's tough comparing the two, but Letterman's monologue is much better. Also, I know a lot is the writers, but Letterman seems to deliver better as well.
  13. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jun 5, 2009 -> 08:24 AM) wtf dude, who cares. This is kinda ridiculous logic. I don't really think so. If he is guilty, he stays quiet. If he is innocent, he speaks out on his behalf. Not so crazy logic. This also says a lot about the Bulls future superstar's character if he isn't man enough to face the media regardless of his guilt or innocence.
  14. I will go ahead and say five (in order): Poreda, Danks, Flowers, Allen and Viciedo. This is assuming Beckham doesn't qualify, which he won't if he plays the rest of the year in Chicago. My best guess about rankings would be: Poreda (35-45) Danks (40-50) Flowers (70-80) Allen (75-85) Viciedo (90-100) Beckham if he qualified would be between five and 10 in my opinion. I also think Retherford, Hudson and possibly Carter would get some consideration as well, but ultimately performance (Carter), Hudson, significant production dip after promotion (Hudson) and lack of physical tools (Retherford) would preclude them from making the list. But still, our system is getting significantly more stacked than ever before. I really like our hitters much better than the 2000 group that was labeled the best system in baseball, although that was primarily based on pitching. Our depth is great pitching wise, too, but we lack true difference makers. Poreda is coming along, but I wouldn't label him a difference maker, since he doesn't have the secondary pitches. I am hoping a big name slips in the draft this year and we snag him, but that probably won't happen. Other opinions about these guys?
  15. Once the Barons clinch the first half, first place, I expect both Allen and Danks to be promoted assuming they still are playing well. Retherford might also, but that would mean three AAA people have to be demoted or released, which is a lot. I don't think they would go from AA to the majors with Danks, giving him some AAA time would be good. Allen could also be test more and I think his prodigious power would show up more in Charlotte.
  16. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 5, 2009 -> 07:44 AM) Wow. That's unexpected - I thought maybe at best he was going to get a spring training shot for Opening Day next year. Yeah. But I am actually all for brining the kids up. This season is a wash. We are going to be 5 games under to 5 games over the whole year, more likely the under. I really wouldn't mind getting the kids feet wet and building toward next year when we can add via FA. Danks is definitely ready fielding wise, but he would probably hit poorly right away in the majors due to his high K rate. My best guess right now if he came up right now he could produce: .240, 15 HR, 20 SB, but great CF ability (over a full season, BTW, the numbers reflect). The average could be wishful thinking. I know people will point out a great average in the minors, but when you K a lot, it translate usually to a poor ML average, at least right away. Still, I am not averse to bringing him up and just playing him.
  17. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jun 4, 2009 -> 07:42 AM) Rose denied it already. Publicly or via his "people"? I haven't seen him say anything to reporters yet. Unless, he comes out and publicly denies it, I know he is lying even though he probably is lying anyway.
  18. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 2, 2009 -> 12:48 PM) Link If it were true that Rose did not cheat and he did, in fact, take the SAT, then he would have come out and said so. His silence, to me, means that he is guilty. Why else would he be quiet? If he did take, he would be out championing that he took the test and so on.
  19. We sure he plays tonight? Could be tough after going from Charlotte to Chicago overnight. I wanna watch live so I am hoping for tomorrow, but I taped it, so I can watch later, if necessary.
  20. Brian continues to show he cannot make adjustments at the plate. Even though he started off the year well, he has shown the Pods is clearly going to be CF when Q comes back.
  21. Brian needs to go opposite way on Outman. Pulling the ball is going get an out.

QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 08:03 PM) Some guys can just hit, doesn't matter what level or who they're facing. It's looking more and more like Beckham might be one of those guys. For Beckham, if everything pans out with him, I'm predicting something of a cross between Kinsler and Michael Young. The power and speed of Kinsler with the pure hitting ability of Young. That's a stud of a baseball player right there. I think just Michael Young is a great comp. In his prime, Young was a .315, 20 HR, 100 RBI and 15 SB. That is about what Beckham hopefully can produce in a couple years.
  23. This is disgusting how the As are outplaying us -- at home no less.
  24. QUOTE (shipps @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 07:59 PM) that is great but did he have any errors (the most important stat) cause we know the kid can flat out rake already. He had three in his first three games. None so far.

QUOTE (Palehosefan @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 07:58 PM) Beckham 3-3 with 2 doubles now. He's slaying AAA, making it his b****, owning it, whatever another saying is. He has nothing left to learn in the minors. Getz, Fields and Nix are all below-average players no matter how good they can look at times (yes, very rare, but it has happened), and Gordon can be an immediate .300 in our lineup, maybe more, who knows?
