Signings from the 2008 Draft
QUOTE (29andPoplar @ Jun 12, 2008 -> 01:14 PM) Something of a preview article for Great Falls, who've changed their nickname from the White Sox to the Voyageurs: http://www.greatfallstribune.com/apps/pbcs...312/1006/SPORTS And apparently, the Great Falls writer does not know the White Sox's first roun pick was Gordon Beckham, not Jordan. Great reporting there, messing up on something so easy to check.

Signings from the 2008 Draft
QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jun 12, 2008 -> 01:56 PM) You can bold out 1377 Lee Fischer. He's been assigned to Kannapolis. if Lee Fischer hits above .150 I will crap my pants. There is no future for this guy. he couldn't hit his weight with metal bats at Mizzou and the one thing he was good at, fielding, he stunk at this year.

Cuban Dayan Viciedo defected
QUOTE (DBAH0 @ Jun 11, 2008 -> 04:06 PM) That's very heartening to hear regarding Alexei and his connection with Viciedo. Right now the Sox are in a fantastic position to rebuild their system from argubly the 2nd worst in the majors (I consider Houston's the worst), to a top 10 system if they went out and signed this kid, and the tougher signs in the draft e.g Long the 1B/P. And you KW would love to use those type of assets in the farm to make some trades to take this team even further. If we signed this kid, we would likely be in the top 20, not top 10 though. The guys we signed would have to show that they aren't just raw and have solid potential. Our draft class looks solid and this kid certainly would be an impact prospect, but still we are seriously devoid of anything minus Fields and Broadway (who aren't top prospects in the prospect world) in the upper levels of our system. Top 10 would come in 2-3 years, but you really can't make that jump from 29 to top 10 with one draft class and one FA signing, it usually takes a couple if not three draft classes and a few FA signings. Trades for minor league talent don't hurt as well.

6/10 - Sox @ DET, 6:05 CT, CSN
Limit it to 3-2 and we'll be fine. They're bullpen is taxed and third time around we will hit Robertson.

Take a look at the closers in the Sox org right now
Joe Valentine. I don't Link is anything really, but his numbers are solid and he isn't that old. Teixeira has a great slider, so he could turn out to be something and MaBee has been good everywhere thus far. He also is on the Comcast TV show about the New England Collegiate Baseball League. Not sure what kind of stuff we are talking about, but he could be good. Needs to be promoted because 23 (will turn in July) in low-A ball is not that good.

Dontrelle Willis sent to A-ball today
QUOTE (WCSox @ Jun 10, 2008 -> 05:42 PM) The Tigers have only themselves to blame. He had a 5.17 ERA in the NL last year and yielded 87 walks. What did they expect? Haha, coming to the AL.

Trade deadline
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jun 9, 2008 -> 05:11 PM) Juan Uribe is worthless at this point, I'd like to replace him with a serious LH bat off the bench. Would love a base stealing threat as well. IMO, there are two possibilities for that role. Lofton or Owens.

Poreda to B'ham...
QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 9, 2008 -> 07:06 AM) From what I have heard/read, he doesn't have much secondary stuff and he is an injury risk with his mechanics. That is why I, like many others, still feel his future is in the pen, possibly as Thornton's replacement as the lefty SU guy. Really? I thought he had pretty clean mechanics and people thought he could handle throwing that hard because he is so big and has relatively clean mechanics.

6/8 - Sox vs. MIN, 1:05 CT, CSN
QUOTE (southsidehawkeye @ Jun 8, 2008 -> 01:15 PM) Tarp is off, 2:35 start time SWEET!!! Hopefully with the hot and humid air, Gavin gets the ball down. That is especially important today because from all the stats I have been reading his flyball rate is about the same, but his homerun rate is half, so he has been lucky, so if he gets the ball up with the humid air, the ball could travel a long way. On the flip side, hopefully our O puts out a big number.

Double Dose of ESPN Sunday Night Baseball
Glad both are night games now for viewing purposes, but there will be even more fights with the extra hours of drinking before. Hopefully, nothing too bad happens, but I am sure something will and then Mariotti will write something.

Blackhawks Offseason Thread
QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Jun 8, 2008 -> 12:57 PM) Except it doesn't work that way at all, as Toews-Kane-Keith will all be up new contracts in two years. You can't just press yourself up against the cap every year. Thats not how it works. Big money will be set aside for the 3 of them. But Khabby's contact will be up by then, so you get that extra money freed up.

Mean Joe Crede
QUOTE (soxfn4life @ Jun 8, 2008 -> 08:28 AM) Do you think Josh Fields woulkd have 12 errors? Probably not have 12 errors, but he would not get to nearly the same amount of balls as Crede. The way he dives and blocks balls and then gets up and throws is a thing of beauty that few can do, and Fields is not one of them. But I think Fields would have 7-10 errors, too, and there is no question as far as scouts are concered who is the better fielder. Also, Crede is by far the best AL third baseman this year, numbers wise. Since A-Rod will win the position, Crede should be the first backup.

Cuban Dayan Viciedo defected
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 7, 2008 -> 05:12 PM) Ya, Cubano indicated in his initial post that Torres is the same agent as Count and Alexi and that hopefully the good relationship with Torres could allow the Sox to have a solid shot at this Cuban kid. haha missed that. BA compared him to a Cuban player that SF signed recently for $2.1 million. So if the Sox want this guy be prepared to sign him for over $2 million. Highly doubt the Sox make an attempt.

6/7 - Sox vs. MIN, 6:05 CT, WGN
QUOTE (tommy @ Jun 7, 2008 -> 04:04 PM) There's some thunderstorms going around the area, game still on? Yeah, might be delayed, but the game should be played.

Cuban Dayan Viciedo defected
Jamie Torres is his agent? Think he is also the agent of Count and Alexei, so if that's the case, looks like the Sox would have a good shot at him if they spend the money.

So what's the deal with Jordan Danks?
IMO, his upside is a Grady Sizemore-type leadoff man. He should hit like Jason said, .280-.300 range, with possibly ones he fills out 20 HRs and 20 SBs. Plus, like Sizemore, great D, but he's got a better arm that Grady. It's a great pick and he will be a solid major leaguer for years. Great bloodlines, smart player, works hard, at worst, he is a solid leadoff hitter/end of the order guy who will hit around .275 with a good OBP. I do think he will sign. I believe it ultimately comes down to what the family wants to do and I think the Sox organization is one they want to be a part of again with the success John has had here. The Sox obviously will have to put forth the money, but I see no reason, they can't come to an agreement.

QUOTE (sayitaintso @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 06:49 PM) Didn't we draft him a few years ago too? I think that was Kyle Williams, KW's son who plays football at ASU.

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 06:45 PM) This screams of a really s***ty pick. I'm pretty sure he'd have been there 5 round later. Prolly in the 20th round, sadly.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 06:42 PM) I have no problem with those sorts of drafts. Mike Piazza says hi. I have a problem if your team overdrafts them. I believe Piazza's dad was friends with Lasorda. Little different IMO.

Hopefully, the Sox take some more quick players like this. Maybe better numbers for the player, but I think we need some speed types in our system.

I think it's a bad idea to draft a relative (worse a son) IMO. Represents a conflict of interest.

Brewers take one of the best names in the draft: Maverick Lasker.

QUOTE (danman31 @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 06:14 PM) Is it possible to have worse control than him as far as pro pitchers are concerned? Jason Neighborgall (spelling) when he was drafted.
