  1. QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Aug 14, 2009 -> 06:39 PM) This guy on RealGM who is having the same discussion said it best: i see his point except the part about the worst things people have done and have them aired in the public for weeks... I can safely say myself and I think just about all my friends and family have done nothing anywhere near the level of what Michael Vick did, I can honestly say that I can take the worst things I did and air them in public and it might cause slight embarassement, but nothing where I think people would think I am an evil or vicious person. Also, we as humans are allowed to make distinctions and a majority of people (not even me, I wouldn't hunt) have separated game from domesticated animals. Now people obviously have a right to disagree with it, but they don't have a right to say people who disagree with them are "wrong" just because they don't agree with them. Also, to me, people are underplaying the torture he administered on to animals and the fact he stole pets from the neighborhoods and used them as practice kills for the fighting dogs. To me that shows a disturbed mind.
  2. QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 14, 2009 -> 06:34 PM) murder - the crime of unlawfully killing a person especially with malice aforethought Dante Stallworth did not murder anyone. He did not seek out this person and attempt to run him down on the road and end his life. exactly right... I believe he pleaded guilty to a "manslaughter" charge in Florida, completely different mens rea necessary... the criminal justice system recognizes the difference That aside, they're two different arguments IMO. I think both are terrible, but because Dante Stallworth killed somebody with his car doesn't mean I think Vick should get an "easier" time of things from the NFL or anyone else. Michael Vick bankrolled and participated over a stretch of time in a heinous criminal dog fighting ring which included him personally killing dogs. To me that shows a strong predilection of criminal and disturbed state of mind. So the NFL and the American public can't be disgusted by him and be cautious of giving him extra chances because Dante Stallworth killed someone with a car or even if he just straight up killed someone with malice? I don't get the connection, they're two different cases.
  3. QUOTE (G&T @ Aug 14, 2009 -> 03:54 PM) The Cubs aren't the tallest midget. As of now, they are the second tallest midget. The Cards and Cubs have almost the exact same record against the NL central: Cards: 32-24 Cubs: 32-23 (coming into today) That's a lot of wins against crap. I think with the addition of DeRosa (who was injured for about the first 2-3 weeks he was with the Cards) and Holliday, the Cards are a different team then they were before
  4. QUOTE (High Mileage @ Aug 14, 2009 -> 02:34 AM) He's a slighty above average player, with a superstar contract. Most Similar Batters 1. Pete Reiser (950) 2. Shane Mack (942) 3. Gabe Kapler (940) 4. David DeJesus (939) 5. Danny Taylor (939) 6. Roy Weatherly (938) 7. Ray Blades (938) 8. Coco Crisp (936) 9. Milton Bradley (934) 10. Wally Judnich (934) I wouldn't have wanted Rios for DeJesus, let alone Rios for $60M. this year has dragged him down some with his 94 ops+ (last time I checked after the trade). So I imagine the Sox are hoping he comes closer to his previous 2 years when he was a more productive offensive player. Also, "superstar contract" always gets a new meaning. He won't have a "superstar" contract after Bay and Holliday get their new deals
  5. QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Aug 14, 2009 -> 03:21 PM) If your mother gives you money, and you use the money to finance drugs so you can re-sell them and you get caught for dealing drugs, is your mom as guilty as you for operating a drug ring if she didn't know about it? And don't say it's unrealistic because it is very realistic. I've seen it happen with my own eyes for a lot of friends. well, if he absolutely knew zero about it or there was a zero chance that the people were going to do illegal actions with the money then I agree with you, but if I'm giving money to some friends I would have a good idea where it's going to go... also, he's a multi-million dollar athlete who has some responsability to the NFL, the team he played for and the sponsors, so it's not quite the same in my eyes. Look, to me it's not if you kill someone you're bad and everything else I'm going to let slide. He bankrolled and knew a vicous dog fighting ring was taking place on his property and he viciously killed animals. Yes he served his jail time, still under the court's supervision for a few years I believe, but there's a difference between the criminal justice system and the world's opinion of people. Because O.J. was found not guilty in the criminal justice system does that mean he didn't do it? No, people can still believe he did. The criminal justice system is one aspect of how crimes are dealt with, granted the major one, but people are allowed to have their opinions on people once their "sentence" is done. I still think he's a horrible inhumane person who probably needs more than a year or two to completely turn around. If you haven't, take a second and read some of the accounts of what he did, he is/was a truly sick human. They would take pet dogs from the neighborhood so they're fighting dogs can practice killing, not to mention Vick personally killing dogs. To me that shows a pattern of a disturbed person. I am thrilled the Bears didn't sign him and I wish the NFL would have given him another year to prove he's on the right track. Corporations and the government can decide they don't want to hire somebody because he or she is an ex-felon. I would have had zero problem if the NFL said he was banned for life, as well as Stalworth and the others.
  6. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 14, 2009 -> 03:11 PM) Wow, just saw that the Cubs are up 17-2 in the 5th freakin inning - scored 10 runs in the 2nd. It's amazing how predictable that team is. Beat bad teams, lose to good teams, suffer numerous injuries along the way. Like clockwork. This might be one of the greatest "tallest midget" teams I can remember in years. This team flat out owns bad teams and then they look terrible against good teams.
  7. I am a horrible sleeper. I have a hard time shutting my brain off at night so it's hard to get to sleep no matter how tired I am, then when I do get to sleep I sleep extremely lightly and then I'm tired in the morning.
  8. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Aug 13, 2009 -> 07:40 PM) This can happen just about anywhere. Of course it can and does... but this week it also happened at a place withhin the, what, last 10-15 years trash has been thrown on the field multiple times enough to stop game play, a fan stole another player's hat right off his head and started an incident by the bullpen, and a guy walked on the mound and confronted a Cubs pitcher (was it Myers?) all while on the TV and radio broadcasts it's said numerous times these are the greatest fans in the world, and also their fans walk around saying how "white trash" and unruly White Sox fans are. I know, I should "get over it", well I am because I don't spend my time clinching my hands about it in an abandoned basement with a naked lightbulb slowly swaying above my head, but I can still find it funny when the B.S. Cubs marketing machine is slapped in the face
  9. http://www.sherdog.com/news/news/update-ba...ck-to-ufc-19091 NYBA looks like he's heading back to the UFC. Obviously odd, but as the article points out it seems like the UFC is looking to snap up Strikeforce fighters. They're probably trying to prevent guys from signing long deals with Strikeforce with the hope of a UFC deal or at least a bidding war. It might be harder for Strikeforce to get traction going in other deals without their guys signed to multi-fight deals

  11. http://www.bloodyelbow.com/2009/8/13/98812...ogin=1250189665 Rumor going around that Fedor's first Strikeforce fight will be against Ricco Rodriquez... if this is true I will sorely be dissapointed and don't want to hear anything from M-1 or Fedor for awhile
  12. According to Meltzer, the CSAC sent a memo to those in title fights Saturday (Carano/Cyborg and Melendez/Ishida) saying they get one shot to weigh in and make weight for it to be a title fight... so basically if you miss weight at the first weigh-in the fight can still go on but it cannot be a title fight... interesting because the women's division has had a bad history of fighters making weight, including that travesty/joke that happened in the last Cyborg fight
  13. It's such a hard thing to balance playing 81 games in the Cell. I think you have to lean towards giving up a little D for offense, but with that said that idea can still be applied and the Sox could play much better defense than they have this year. Overall, with the home park, the White Sox can't go overboard
  14. Apparently Ted Lilly pitching at Peoria was the greatest baseball event in the last 50 years because the broadcasters can't shut the F up about it. I love how they ran the interview with Sweaty Teddy about how awesome the talent in Peoria is... it's no longer "Wait till Next Year" it's "Wait for 3-4 years" Oh yeah, and Cliff Lee just absolutely owned the Cubs today and Dumpster looked average at best. Was that Cubs employees as security or off duty CPD? Because they probably were a little too graby with that guy if they weren't sure it was him who threw the beer if they were Cubs security. If they were off duty CPD, I would defer to their judgment.
  15. QUOTE (ptatc @ Aug 13, 2009 -> 11:24 AM) Remember Steve in the world of SABRmetrics, speed is evil because they will not use it properly and will be tempted to do evil things. Since Pods is mostly a slap hitter his OPS will not look good enough in the stat pages to warrant any complements what so ever. Thus the SABRs will always dislike him. RC/G takes baserunning into account. Not saying stats are the end all be all, but just watching the games this year and his under 70% SB success rate tells me he has contributed this year but also struggled at times on the bases
  16. QUOTE (G&T @ Aug 13, 2009 -> 10:17 AM) This is also about player safety. You can't let people get away with throwing stuff at players when they are trying to catch a ball. What if Victorino gets hit with the beer, gets distracted and then the ball hits him in the face? A player's career can be ended pretty quick with this s***. And it's not just Wrigley. Toronto has had a lot of problems this season. I can actually see more of this happening at Wrigley this year, this team is falling flat on its face and some of those night games with fans drinking all day are going to have a bad vibe going through it, a couple of bad outings by Cubs SPs, some errors and some blowouts could lead to something bigger.
  17. I agree, I've always been a fan of his but it's been raised to a new level this year.
  18. Reminder for those who are lucky enough to have MLBN, Red Sox/Tigers on at 12:30 then there's a night game on at 6 or 7, (not by my TV so can't remember who, but I believe it's a good matchup). Bonus: no Steve Phillips or Joe Morgan!!!! and if it's the MLBN tonight the national guys will actually discuss teams other than the NYY or Bos!!!
  19. I kind of thought along the same lines as TS has, but I just think that it's not a stretch to say if the Sox back into the playoffs and 3 out of Danks, Floyd, Peavy or MB are on a roll and Thorn and Jenks are straight the Sox can put a scare into any of the playoff teams.
  20. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 13, 2009 -> 02:38 AM) Which is why I would have personally had no problem with the Sox moving him at the deadline in the right deal. Fortunately for the Sox, the two right deals did come up, and neither one of them had anything to do with Jordan Danks (except that Rios makes Danks more expendable). I think trader KW has something left for us in the offseason. You guys follow the minors and prospects a lot more closer than I do, but all this talk about Allen, Cunningham and Carter tearing it up for other teams in the minors brings a few questions up for me. 1) aren't they all doing it in the PCL which is notoriously famous for pumping hitting prospects up. Not related to Sox prospects at all, but Stone a few weeks backed talked about how, I believe, the Dodgers would always have guys, especially 1b or corner OF prospects over inflated because of the league and park they were playing in; and 2) maybe the White Sox are just good at finding that type of prospect. It sounds like Marero is a similar prospect to these guys (although older?), so maybe that's the White Sox scouts nitches? Who knows, all I know is KW hasn't been burned badly by a prospect leaving yet, and until I see these guys do it consistently on the MLB level I won't go to crazy.
  21. he obvioulsy hasn't been great his last two times out, but being this angry at Pena about last nights game is misplacing most of the anger IMO.
  22. For the most part nationally the deal has gotten praise. It seems like the negative ones are acting like it was a rent a player deal and they have to pay all $60 million in the next month.
  23. hahahahahahahaahhahahahahahahah, ahahahahahahhahahahahahaha, ahahahahahhaha, hahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahaahhahahaha, hahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahah Oh man, I was having a crappy day and I will admit that I'm shallow and I am enjoying this. Didn't they pay overslot for ND Boy and didn't many people thought they reached at that? I know they had to keep him away from football, but come on, the Phillies hits sounded like shotgun blasts tonight... but according to Brenley he was getting squeezed, so if he wasn't I'm sure he'd be working on a no hitter right now Another gem was when Len and Bob were taking a break about talking about how they both enjoy hip music and they play guitar they were discussing last nights game and were wondering how with only 3 hits the Phills could have possibly won it? I don't know guys, maybe because Marmol flat out sucked and for some reason Lou didn't have Grabow ready?
  24. http://www.nypost.com/seven/11042008/sport...jors_136772.htm OK, i was going to just edit my original post, but since it wasn't the last one up I don't want it to seem like I'm trying to bury my correction. Seems I was a little strong in saying no stat heads were involved, it appears they were, but as this article explains they used tons and tons of video to analyze things and they did have a panel vote. Awesome NY based article too, it also then mentions the purely statitical Penn study that said he's terrible then uses Gold Gloves and a quote from Jeter himself!! Excellent!! Apparently that one year Palmero played like 20 games at 1b then DH'd the rest and won the Gold Glove legitimized that award!
  25. QUOTE (WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Aug 12, 2009 -> 05:32 PM) It would be hilarious if Jeter juiced, just to hear the media excuses for him. It will be just like this season when Sutcliffe was doing a Yankees game on ESPN and Jeter made a routine play into a stretch and his jump throw... Sutcliffe then babbled on for roughly 5 minutes about the article that came out in the offseason about how Jeter was the worse defensive everyday player in the majors and how the evil people were using stats in that article etc... Except he and ESPN's entire production staff failed to mention that article was based on a group of scouts watching video!!! not stats!!!
