QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ May 21, 2009 -> 05:01 PM) This team is just cheap, cheap, cheap. It really a shame, this would have done wonders to rejuvinate the entire fan base. Now, we get to deal with has beens, never beens and Brent f***in lillibridge. it has had a top 10 payroll for many years, so they're not super cheap

QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 21, 2009 -> 04:56 PM) Heyman reports deal is dead. Peavy will talk to media in 30 min. Sox wouldnt pick up the option. I understand the Sox not picking it up, but I'm a little annoyed they got into the dance not willing to do it, they should have known that was going to be a major issue.
-
FWIW ESPN.com or si.com isn't reporting it, may be a matter of time, but not yet
-
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ May 21, 2009 -> 04:45 PM) f***ing Boers and Bernstein are gloating. They are saying it was a good thing for the Sox that it didn't go through, they didn't understand it.

QUOTE (fathom @ May 21, 2009 -> 04:44 PM) I received 8 texts from Cubs fans in the last 5 minutes. What could they possibly be saying? He's not going there either. I am a little annoyed that they went into this not expecting to pick up that option
-
QUOTE (fathom @ May 21, 2009 -> 04:42 PM) I honestly believe Peavy believes the Braves or Cubs will trade for him. He will continue to be a coward until he can go to those teams. At least this saves someone from calling him the White Javy. Cubs would have a hard time since their payroll is frozen until the sale is done and even then Ricketts (?) is already scrambling, they won't have a ton of payroll flexability
-
Did they say ultimately why he rejected it
-
Well, I'm dissapointed, I think it would have been great to have that type of ace, but sounds like the Sox went as far as they were comfortable with
-
Score is saying he said no
-
QUOTE (iamshack @ May 21, 2009 -> 04:28 PM) Olney just claimed the holdup isn't about the option...that they aren't even discussing that. interesting, must be the NTC and other extras, and if the option issue is settled for both sides, then I see this happening and the extras will fall into place
-
QUOTE (onedude @ May 21, 2009 -> 04:24 PM) it's slowed down though yeah, that's probably it until his final decision comes out... seems like Sox send him a reworked option pickup and he's chewing on that
-
QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ May 21, 2009 -> 04:14 PM) So have the Pads throw in a prospect also. is this being reported? you mean to push the Sox to pick up the option?

QUOTE (SoxAce @ May 21, 2009 -> 03:21 PM) In a player's eye, that sometimes doesn't matter. I seen players turn down a legit 1st place club for years just to stay with their teams for sometimes family, teammates, money or the city. Everybody is different. Not saying Jake would do that cause he has already stated that he loves Chicago and prefers the Cubs, but just to think he had to talk to Linebrink about the organization and specifically Ozzie had to persuade him originally. It sounds like he loves the NL and Gammons reported he wasn't keen on going to NYY, Red Sox or LAA last year. Again, I see your point that money will be the big thing, which I 100% understand from his POV. He is just in the position where it may be the Sox or another AL team or stay with SD for awhile. Levine said the Cubs payroll is completely frozen until the deal is done, and then it's a question because nobody is sure how stable the new owner will be to add new payroll (I think he mentioned the 5% owner isn't in great $$ shape) and will Houston, LAD or STL want to pick up any part of that option?
-
QUOTE (Kalapse @ May 21, 2009 -> 03:20 PM) It really is, I love this stuff. Wish I could have taken part in the 1,200 or so posts that have been made since this morning. as a Sox fan it seems like they are making every effort and won't be pissed if this doesn't happen. They're willing to guarantee more money, if it's not acceptable to Peavy then that's the power he got when he negotiated a NTC. I'm down for this trade, but will understand if it fails

QUOTE (SoxAce @ May 21, 2009 -> 03:16 PM) ^^^^^^^^^^^ Really the only thing I can understand him comming here. That option is mad bank for him. As an organization the Sox have proved over the last 10 years or so that they want to win every year. Does it always work out? Of course not, the NYY spend more money than anyone and they haven't won anything in about 10 years. The Sox aren't a black hole org. Even getting Peavy they'll still have mone coming off the books and with the trade they'll have good players in the farm system along with being in a good position in the draft.
-
QUOTE (Brian @ May 21, 2009 -> 03:11 PM) I have a buddy that works at the Suntimes and he just told me that Reinsdorf has stepped into the negotiations and that they want the option year guaranteed and Peavy will accept. If Jerry is involved, I kinda feel it may get done. Makes sense, obviously Jerry wants to get it done, but he probably wants to take some heat of KW if it doesn't get done by showing that the org did everything they could to get it done.
-
QUOTE (Tony82087 @ May 21, 2009 -> 03:13 PM) You need to stop looking at this as a one year thing, because I know Peavy isn't. Sorry, but anyone that argues that SD is in a better postion than the Sox for the next 4 years, especially with Jake on board is crazy. this year isn't done! they're 6.5 out, with Peavy and all the games they have left against the central and at home they can make a very good run this year. Today was obviously horrible, but the Sox won this series and the Twins haven't looked awesome lately.
-
QUOTE (SoxAce @ May 21, 2009 -> 03:09 PM) He'll still be made in SD regardless. Is going to another s***ty team away from your family really worth it? He would be here for 4 years, the Sox have a good farm system, won 2 divisions in '05 and '08 and won a WS, and have had a top payroll the last few years. They're only 6.5 out of first with many games left against the division. Just because they're having a horrible stretch doesn't mean it's a bad team to go to... also it seems like if he comes he'll get another 22m guaranteed in one form or another.
-
QUOTE (SoxAce @ May 21, 2009 -> 03:06 PM) I HIGHLY doubt Peavy accepts a trade to us. Neither does most Padres fans. sounds like if the $$ works out he's down for it.
-
QUOTE (bighurt574 @ May 21, 2009 -> 03:03 PM) Technically, isn't $4M guaranteed? true, no reason for the technically there, that's 100% true.
-
Anyone know how option year renegotiatons are handled as far as approval? Because he's not giving up 22m, say the Sox offer 18m guaranteed and the rest deferred, then he's actually leaving 18m + on the table. It's a little different than in other examples where teams wanted to defer money already guaranteed
-
QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ May 21, 2009 -> 02:57 PM) Backpay backpay backpay no way says peavy is this being reported or your guess? Because right now, not one dime of that 22m is guaranteed, so if he can get 17m guaranteed and some deferred, it's not the worst deal for him
-
QUOTE (thomsonmi @ May 21, 2009 -> 02:55 PM) ESPN 1000 just reported that the White Sox have made an offer to Peavy re-working the $22 million final year of his contract and are waiting for a response from Peavy. did they say how long it would take for it to be approved? Who has to approve it the union or Uncle Bud?
-
20-0
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 21, 2009 -> 02:39 PM) The talk is JR is now willing to re-work the 2013 option making it guaranteed at a smaller amount with money deferred. if true this will drag on for awhile because it will have to be approved
