QUOTE (MN_Sox @ May 28, 2009 -> 10:09 PM) Yeah..I believe JR has money. It's too bad that the Sox are run like a small town team in a large market. How about putting some of that money into the farm and hiring some better scouts. That's the thing I hate about having to move to Minneapolis...hear all about the Twinkies and their farm and their scouting and their minor leagues...blah,blah,blah. You can argue that the farm hasn't produced, but the Sox have invested in some picks, they just haven't panned out... also, the Sox have had a top ten payroll for the last number of years and have made serious runs at Peavy, Hunter, Fukudome and the Cabrera trade... it's not being run like a small town team.

JR doesn't even own the majority of the White Sox and for this ownership group the real money is in the equity of the team (think of what they paid for it and what it's worth now) not year to year operations.

Latest Starter Linked to Sox in a Roundabout Way: Roy Oswalt
SoxFan562004 replied to fathom's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I'd be hesitant to take Oswalt on at this point. I'm just afraid KW is going to blow some of this flexability on Juan Pierre when Manny comes back... I'm not kidding -
QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ May 28, 2009 -> 09:52 PM) The fight will go down. Affliction needs it badly since so far it's the only interesting fight that's basically confirmed for the card. Jay Hieron-Semtex is interesting and is rumored by MMA Weekly, but I don't think that's a done deal yet. Fedor-Barnett is a joke. Barnett's wrestling is ridiculously overrated as is his sub game, and he hasn't beaten a legit top-level HW since he roided up and beat Randy in 2002. He's got nothing for Fedor. Hopefully after this fight Fedor's entire management team dies in a horrific accident, because that's the only way he's going to the UFC - which really, really, really sucks because Fedor-Lesnar, Fedor-Lyoto, and Fedor-Anderson are all huge wet dream fights. Plus Fedor-Cigano, Fedor-Rashad, Fedor-Shogun, Fedor-Randy, etc. are all entertaining fights. Man I wish he'd come to the UFC... I bet he'll end up going back and forth between Dream and Strikeforce though. Ugh. Ultimately, like with Boras discussions, it's up to the athlete... if Fedor really wanted to be in the UFC he would be. I think the exclusivity is what it ultimately comes down to. I don't see, as currently structured, how Affliction has much left in the tank after the 3rd show. As far as stability wise they're 3rd behind UFC and Strikeforce and after Barnett/Fedor there's not very many interesting matchups for Fedor left. They will promote Fedor as the guy who beat 5 former UFC champions, but that doesn't work as well when none of them are in the UFC or holding the belt now. Yes, the Belfort/Mosaui fight is great, but the casual fan will care very little to nothing about it, and to last in the long run, they need the casual fan. I guess they can survive a show or two if they sign Tito, but that's going to cost a ton of cash.

nice that the Sox gained a .5 game on the Twins and Tigers by sleeping in their rooms in KC
-
well the Dodgers were basically willing to hand that game to the Cubs to get their pen back in order and Cubs couldn't take advantage of it.

White Sox's Ramirez sued for $20M in Dominican
SoxFan562004 replied to TheBlackSox8's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ May 28, 2009 -> 02:20 PM) Couldn't he just refuse to pay it, and then never return to the Dominican? depends what type of agreements the U.S. and the Dominican have for liens and the like. I have no idea if there are any, but if there are, then he really should deal with it -
QUOTE (kyyle23 @ May 28, 2009 -> 04:24 PM) What? So soliciting a couple million here and there from local celebrities isnt the way to buy a team? lol, exactly. This is seriously one of the most underreported stories in sports right now. The ramifications this could have on the team going into the future is pretty significant. Right now their payroll is completely frozen and a sale to Ricketts might not magically remedy that and the Cubs are stuck in some bad contracts. However, the media just continues to turn a blind eye on this

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 27, 2009 -> 04:30 PM) Derek Jeter and his .811 OPS are leading the AL in all star votes. please don't forget to mention the fact that he is arguably the worst everyday fielder in baseball, because I had to sit through 5 minutes of Rick Sutcliffe (sp?) on ESPN babbling about how he is such a great defender.
-
The Score is reporting that Sam Zell is now saying that the sale to the Ricketts group is not a 100%. Ricketts group is still having trouble working out the $$$, which of course raises red flags about what the Cubs payroll situation will be if the Ricketts group ever takes control. Of course every "news" outlet will completely ignore this and just keep saying the Cubs will add a big player at the deadline, ie Peavy

QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ May 28, 2009 -> 02:00 PM) Holmes has his own radio show? Yes, and as much as I like Holmes and extremely impressed by his progression as a broadcaster, Hampton makes the show unlistenable

Sox vs. Angels 5/27/09 9:05
SoxFan562004 replied to 103 mph screwball's topic in 2009 Season in Review
Good series, between last year and this series hopefully the Sox are putting that ridiculous trend where out west was a black hole. I'm in the boat with the people that were dissapointed in AJ's and even BA's ABs last night, this team does tend to help out pitchers a little too much, but if they keep winning series they'll be in the hunt this year. Gavin got the loss, but it was a good effort, would like to see him not take that slide step with a guy on second and attack the hitter, but 3 runs in 8 innings with his stuff looking a hell of a lot better in his last two starts is a good sign. -
John Calipari is a dirty coach?
SoxFan562004 replied to Palehosefan's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE (dasox24 @ May 27, 2009 -> 08:56 PM) Yeah, no kidding. I wish Calipari would take any sanctions against Memphis with him to KY, but that obviously isn't how this type of situation works with the NCAA. That's how it should work, though, since you know he knew everything "dirty" that was going on. I hate Calipari more than any other coach in all of sports. He's one smug jackass. The coach can be sanctioned if it's bad enough, Kelvin Sampson is an example -
QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ May 27, 2009 -> 09:12 PM) That fight is going to be awesome. Now Mousassi wants to have a catch weight though. I don't get it. If you can make MW and destroy people as a bigger guy, why do you want to move to LHW and HW? Trigg is back in the UFC as well. Haven't seen the good fighters' fights yet, but I saw Canseco and Soko. Canseco did a lot better than I thought he would, but HMC didn't seem all that intent on hurting him. And f*** Sokoudjou! I used to like him, but now I can't stand the guy. Always wants big fights, yet can't beat anyone in the top-20. The post-stoppage attack on Nortje is exactly what Hendo should be doing to Soko every f***ing day for embarrassing Team Quest. There's nothing more frustrating in sports than an uber-talented athlete who doesn't learn and doesn't care. in his update today Meltzer says Belfort will only take it at 185 at Mossaui says he can't make the cut, so that is still up in the air.

looking at the replay, I think the Pirate (Morgan?) was safe, throw beat him and Zambrano got the mitt down quickly, but his hand slipped in

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 27, 2009 -> 11:11 AM) If the Lakers win it, I think it goes 7. I think it's possible the Magic could just beat them senseless too. they could, if Bynum doesn't show up Howard crushes in that series. I am fine with anyone winning except the Lakers. I think the whole Kobe Bryant situation is gross. -

I'm eyeing a Magic/Lakers final. I think the Lakers will struggle to win the series, I think it goes seven. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 27, 2009 -> 11:05 AM) The near unanimity here makes one wonder what the Hell the NBA officials are actually being taught.l it's insane how much superstars or their teams in the playoffs get away with or a favorable call. The last minure of the Cavs/Magic regulation last night is a great example of that. If that's Hedo on the other end instead of James driving it's not called and the refs say he stumbled on his own, then the ridiculous no call when Varejo (sp?) undercuts and moves Howard off his spot. Luckily the Magic overcame it.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 27, 2009 -> 11:03 AM) I have Mauer. yeah, so you're on a completely different level. I read an article that if you don't get one of the top catchers (I believe this year it was Mauer, Molina, Martin, Posada, Soto and a 2-3 I'm completely forgetting), then you're better off just drafting a catcher with your last pick or two because past those coming into the season, obviously Soto and Martin have dissapointed, every other catcher is basically the same.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 27, 2009 -> 08:55 AM) I love it. I've had someone pounding down my door for Victor Martinez, and I told him the moment I heard this news he'd be on the table. So, now that Wieters will be called up, I have him. I sent off Victor Martinez, Vernon Wells, and CC Sabathia (I also have Matt Cain, Dan Haren, Johan Santana, Mark Buehrle, John Danks). I got back Adrian Gonzalez and Ryan Braun. We'll see how Wieters hits, but this is awesome news. you can make up so much ground if you have a quality catcher in fantasy. Molina was awesome up until the last 2 weeks, but I have Posada on my bench who is ready to come off the DL for next week.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ May 27, 2009 -> 02:30 AM) They say green is the color of envy? Well call me Oscar the f***ing Grouch. The O's have a chance to be pretty special in the next 2-3 years. yeah, but look at the Barons, that should make you somewhat happy! Also with the 4 picks coming up in the draft the Sox have a chance to be deep real quick, and if we know KW, those are ALL trading pawns!!! Seriously, I hope KW has the opportunity to take one or two guys who dropped due to signability and just crush this draft.

QUOTE (BearSox @ May 27, 2009 -> 09:44 AM) I am usually right. Except, screw you Ryan Sweeney. Start freaking hitting the ball. However, I'd still take Sweeney over Swisher, Betemit, Marquez, and Nunez combined. wow, right now that's like picking a girl at last call at a 4:00 a.m. bar... I guess if forced I would have to pick Swisher because of his hot start, although he has been crashing down at a ridiculous pace lately, just because he has a few full years in MLB as an above average player, but I can see your Sweeney pick since he's 24, but a 72 OPS+ doesn't point to a great start as a MLB player

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 27, 2009 -> 10:42 AM) Up until the game starts it is. After that it is in the umps hands. I thought there was even a time limit before the game for it to be the team's call. I remember, i think it was the 2000 team, where the Sox had a weird rotation glitch either due to injury or a previous double header where Tanyon Sutrze was going to have to start a game and the Sox called the game like 8 hours beforehand due to bad weather forecast and I remember the reporter saying the Sox had the call up until a certain point then the umps had the call. Whatever though, yeah, once it's gametime or during the game it's the umps, could you imagine games in September when a competing team was up 1 run after the game was official, they would be rushing to call it during a light shower.

QUOTE (WCSox @ May 26, 2009 -> 10:27 PM) Since completing a deal for Peavy clearly means that the Sox are going for it NOW (rather than next year when Thome and Dye are gone, or the following year when Paulie is gone), methinks that Kenny would be perfectly fine with a lesser financial commitment to an older pitcher like Oswalt. A Peavy deal would obviously help the Sox this year, I mean 4.5 out with plenty of games against KC, Min and Det left, but the deal would also have been a long term deal... MB, Danks, Floyd and Peavy under control or contract for 3 more years, still money coming off the books, even with adding Peavy and an improved farm system to use for players or trades.
