  1. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 11:58 PM) Ozzie trys to marginalize Beckham again. "''You guys [the media] do a pretty good PR department for Beckham,'' Guillen said. ''I've been in Chicago for 17 years, playing and coaching. Has anybody been 0-for-whatever he is, he hasn't got booed yet? He hit a ground ball to second base and got a standing ovation from the fans [the other day]. Somebody hit a ground ball right at him, and he got another standing ovation. Good job, guys. Keep it up. I hope he sells a lot of shirts, but I need production.'' I'm starting to feel very uncomfortable with Ozzie managing the next generation of White Sox players. http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/wh...soxnt10.article yeah, it's unecessary. Hopefully JR talks to him about it because I don't think KW would work. I'll make a wild prediction that Ozzie "retires" after this season
  2. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 10:49 PM) The picks been growing on me over the last couple of hours. He has too much skill in every area to write off. maybe it's the past of Sox picks getting ripped, but I was encouraged that none of the "experts" ripped the pick, in fact many praised it as a very good pick, specifically John Hart on MLBN
  3. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 10:53 PM) Major sanctions must be on the way to the USC basketball program for him to quit like that. /captain obvious yeah, he can just be like Calipari and move on to another great job and when he's doing well at that school with dirty players ESPN can just completely ignore his past
  4. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 11:39 PM) Nothing to suggest Dye won't keep playing good
  5. OK, friendly reminder, check your spam inboxes... my friend had 3 e-mails in his from people he sent a cover letter to, luckily he checked before it was too late. I check my spam at least once every other day
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 09:20 PM) So yeah, my softball practice tonight had to work around the helicopter that made an emergency landing on the playing field. was it someone from the game? Usually softball is good for 2-3 horrific injuries and an occasional death... usually happens when the new bats come out and the sanctioning bodies don't outlaw them early enough... the original Miken bat was basically a lethal weapon
  7. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 11:33 PM) Nagging side for Jenks, and Dye has a strained calf http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/chi-1...0,3988759.story ick, without Dye the lineup will be UGLY...
  8. I'm in the minority when talking to friends, but I would put Larkin in, first ballot I would understand getting stoned
  9. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 07:54 PM) 10 of the first 16 batters to face Moehler have reached. he's as bad a SP as I've seen in awhile, he flat out is throwing BP at points in a game
  10. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 11:18 PM) Maybe we'll see KW offer extensions to someone like Dye at the Sox's price, and if they don't agree to it, they'll trade them. I'd love to see Dye get a 2 yr deal and return as our DH. That way, you can go out and get a RF for next year who bats lefty. I would be OK with Dye sticking around as the main DH the next few years, but, even though I'm not a HUGE guy on having to go R L R L in a lineup, they do need to address a LH power hitter, especially playing 81 games in the cell With Dye you would have some flexability with DH, say Q has some injury bugs, you could stick him at DH for a week and Dye could go to the outfield and work him at 1b in ST to spell PK if he's still here
  11. QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 11:15 PM) They have been going away with him quite a bit. I haven't seen them pounding him in at all. exactly, his approach and ABs have been OK lately, I think he'll have a 3-4 or 4-5 game soon
  12. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 11:15 PM) If you ask enough scouts about anybody, no matter how good or potentially good, you'll get some negative opinions. There is a reason some teams are good and some teams are awful. right, Strausburgh (sp?) has negatives, people compare his upsidedown W arm action with Priors... is he an awesome prospect? Absolutely, but everyone has negs
  13. QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 11:15 PM) This past offseason there was not a window with which to get the team great. At least not a creative way of doing it, not without a big blow up of payroll. There is that window this coming offseason when money comes off the books. So they'll go for it then. you may also see KW do a trade deadline for a bigger contract with a completely out of contention team (similar to the Peavy deal). Wouldn't mean they're going for it this year, but the Sox identify a good younger player with a longer term contract and snap it up
  14. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 11:13 PM) I think most reasonably minded people aren't going to get upset if we trade veterans in July while appearing to be out of the race if we get a good haul in return. And I trust that we will if such a scenario happens. I don't think we are going to sell off all of our veteran parts though, some people will stay. I do to, especially since a lot of payroll is coming off it won't be crippling to have a vet or two stay around.
  15. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 11:12 PM) Ok, even though 3 of the 4 guys he mentioned were first round picks. There is one guy on our team that would fetch a potential game-changing prospect, and it's Jenks (assuming he's healthy ) depends on what happens with injuries, if there's an injury or two one of the hitters could get a lot
  16. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 11:10 PM) Well this I agree with, and I trust the rebuilding process going on even with the fact I'm not the world's biggest KW fan. But I think if this team (the 2009 one individually that is) continues to trend down, the rebuilding process will "slap us in the face" a little more come the trade deadline. right, imagine what the Mets would give for PK if he continues with his good season and Delgado's prognosis is iffy, all it would take is one other team (Red Sox?) to be interested to get a lot for him
  17. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 11:08 PM) did you miss some of the scouts saying Beckham should turn into one of the best hitters in baseball? In 3 years, I'll be shocked if Beckham doesn't put up numbers similar or better than Pedroia. that was the risk about bringing Beckham up, a complete overreation to early struggles (but his late BB was good). I like that they're keeping him lower in the order, his struggles are less magnified
  18. QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 11:06 PM) Kenny has never sold before, most of his trades are done well before the deadline. He was nixed once with Peavy, it has been eerily quiet lately. some of that is there isn't many teams willing to deal this early, that would have been a MAJOR move that early in the season. Freddy was early, but Seattle got what they wanted. I think if they're 7-10 games out at the deadline he'll trade at least one of the vets. Also, it's not like previous years when being stuck with the vets mean being stuck with payroll next year
  19. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 11:03 PM) Well that's why I won't get mad at KW if he waits. You can get more the longer you wait, and even the ultimate pessimist about this team (me) will admit that this division is awful, and thus you're a hot week or two away from being right back in the race (as we saw in late May). yeah, I think KW viewed this team as a crapshoot, it's an old team with potential firepower that could keep the team in it. It's not ridiculous to think Danks or Floyd have a good game and keep them into against the pen, and the pen, especially tomorrow against a used Tigers pen. Again, I don't have a ton of hope for this team this year, but with the fans reaction to Beckham it shows the fanbase is positive, then maybe some pieces come back at the deadline and 40m in payroll off the books.
  20. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 11:02 PM) Sox attendance is up 2 percent so far this year. We're one of a handful of teams with a positive increase this year. again, this is just the type of team that will muddle around 4-7 games all year, enough to keep people interested and with a move or two in the offseason there will be a buzz
  21. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 10:59 PM) You know my thinking. If you're not going to end up within 5 games of the divisional lead (which means you're in it until the last week), then you might as well be out of it come the deadline. right a fire sale now probably won't reap as much as you could get on July 31st... even a very good pen arm can get a decent bidding war going between two teams and you could pull out a higher level prospect
  22. QUOTE (joesaiditstrue @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 10:58 PM) I wasn't making a point about people wanting to see the 2005 roster. I was making a point about people wanting to see players they recognize and that are good players. Firesale or "Youth Movement" would include a large roster of unproven players that will take at least a couple years to get decent, and we WOULD see a sharp decline in ticket sales putting up a losing record for two years or more I think the reaction Beckham has gotten is a great sign for the Sox going into the future. Also, the Sox are going to have a ton of money coming off the books and knowing KW will make a splashy move or two... this is a completely different Sox fan base than before 05
  23. The way the season is going I see the Sox scrating out one of the next two and keeping this thing status quo for awhile
  24. i'm sure it's been said in the 51 pages, but John Hart on MLBN loved the Sox pick. After breaking down Strausburgh (sp?) in the 1st down recap he was one of the first guys he mentioned
